EDWARD HOPPER, (AMERICAN 1882-1967),

Lot 8: EDWARD HOPPER, (AMERICAN 1882-1967), "NIGHT SHADOWS" from "CORNER SALOON'

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: EDWARD HOPPER (american 1882-1967)/span "NIGHT SHADOWS" from "CORNER SALOON' 1921. Edition of approximately 500. Pencil signed in the margin, etching. Published by The New Republic, New York, unframed. 6 15/16 x 8 1/4 in. (17.6 x 21cm) [Levin 82] provenance: /spanPrivate Collection, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Condition Report: Image in fine original condition. As seen in catalogue photo, the image and an area outside all sides of the image are badly toned - light stained. We believe the print can be lightened to its original state by a professional paper conservator. The outer right, left and bottom edges of the sheet with slight deckling and at these three sides the sheet retains its original, full margins. The top edge of the sheet appears to be (unevenly in part) cut, reduced from the full margin. At outer lower right edge in the margin only, extending from the outer right edge of sheet and NOT touching the image is an 'L' - shaped tear in the sheet, approx. 9/16 x 1 1/8 inches. Sheet size: 10 15/16 x 13 3/4 inches; total area, including the image/area just outside the image that is browned: 7 13/16 x 9 5/16 inches. There is some minor cockling to bottom margin. The very outer upper right corner of sheet in margin only has a tiny fold. There is some discoloration (non-obtrusive) in part of bottom margin at left, including the ghost image of a removed tape piece. Just below the tear in the right margin there is another ghost image from a removed tape piece. Along part of outer top edge verso there is a thin tape piece remnant - not affixed to anything. Verso of sheet with brown toning lines around image and some toned striated horizontal lines (perhaps print was at one time framed with corrugated cardboard?). Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid. All transactions are governed by Freeman's Conditions of Sale.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: ALEXANDER HELWIG WYANT (american 1836-1892)/span BUCOLIC VALLEY Signed in ligature and dated 'AWyant 186*' lower right, oil on canvas laid to board 28 x 45 in. (71.1 x 114.3cm) provenance: /spanPrivate Collection, Pennsylvania.

Condition Report: In generally good overall condition with some restoration visible under u.v. light, the largest restored area approx. 1 1/4 x 3/4 inches to an area of branches/leaves to tall tree at right. There is also localized restouch and restoration. The immediate areas around the top of tree at right and left are lighter under u.v. than the rest of the sky. In our opinion this is due to pigments used and does NOT mean that the sky is restored. The top edges of the mountain at left are slightly darker in color than the rest of the mountains, possibly due to restoration, possibly due to pigment. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. THOMAS DOUGHTY, (AMERICAN 1793-1856), LANDSCAPE WITH CASTLE

Lot 16: THOMAS DOUGHTY, (AMERICAN 1793-1856), LANDSCAPE WITH CASTLE

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: THOMAS DOUGHTY (american 1793-1856)/span LANDSCAPE WITH CASTLE Indistinctly signed 'Doughty' bottom right, oil on canvas 16 1/2 x 23 5/8 in. (41.9 x 60cm) provenance: /spanThe Estate of Blankenship, Boston, Massachusetts. Vose Galleries, Boston, Massachusetts, 1976. Private Collection, Boston, Massachusetts. Private Collection, Massachusetts.

Condition Report: This painting is an oil on canvas laid down to either board or panel, then backed with a canvas. The painting has some areas that appear skinned (i.e. thin, where there may originally have been thicker pigment). Under u.v. light, there are two surface drips in the sky that start from the top of the painting. These drips are located at upper left and upper center right. There are a handful of small areas in the sky that are dark under u.v. but as these areas appear to follow the white pigment in the sky, we do not believe these are restored areas. The painting has varnish inconsistencies, with leftover greenish varnish mostly seen under u.v. at lower right. Also at lower right, under u.v. light there are copper colored areas (we do not know if this is restoration) mostly at lower right, including an area over the signature, and also in foreground/greenery, above and to left of the signature. This copper coloring at right is in the area of the residual varnish, but clearly separate from that varnish. The signature does NOT appear to be strengthened or added. Below the figure and to the right of the log on which the figure sits are two small areas that also appear copper colored under u.v. Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: HERMANN HERZOG (american/german 1831-1932)/span WHEAT HARVEST Signed 'H. Herzog' bottom right, oil on canvas 15 1/8 x 21 in. (38.4 x 53.3cm) provenance: /spanPrivate Collection, Pennsylvania.

Condition Report: The relined canvas is rather extensively restored in the sky, mountains, landscape, wheat stalks. The restoration is very prominent under u.v. light and is executed very professionally and precisely. The two standing figures are not restored; the kneeling figure has a pinhead size spot of retouch. The restoration in this painting is in the form of very precise retouch - some pinhead size - along with larger areas that have been restored, the latter including several areas in the sky, parts of the mountains and the wheat stalk at right rear. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: GEORGE INNESS (american 1825-1894)/span "TWILIGHT LANDSCAPE" Signed 'G. Inness' bottom right, oil on board laid to canvas 9 1/2 x 14 3/8 in. (24.1 x 36.5cm) [Quick 590] c. 1877-1878. provenance: /spanBen Wolf, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. By descent in the family. University of Michigan, William Clements Library, Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Condition Report: Painting appears to need a cleaning and surface is abraded but generally in good overall condition apart from only minor scattered retouch in parts of the landscape - predominately at lower left corner - and spotty fill in the sky. There are two tiny missing chips of paint in the trees at upper center. A small area of the sky at upper left corner is lighter in color than surrounding areas, though this area does not fluoresce under u.v. Some small areas appear dark under u.v. light due to pigment, not due to restoration. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: JAMES PEALE SR. (american 1749-1831)/span "PEACHES AND GRAPES" Inscribed 'Painted by James Peale 1824' in pencil verso; also with 'Kennedy Galleries, NY, NY' label verso, oil on panel 14 1/2 x 18 3/8 in. (36.8 x 46.7cm) provenance: /spanKennedy Galleries, New York, New York. Acquired from the above, August 22, 1972. Private Collection, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. By descent in the family. Private Collection, Pennsylvania. note:/span James Peale Sr. is considered the founder of the Philadelphia still life tradition. The younger brother of Charles Willson Peale, he gave up painting miniatures in 1810 due to failing eyesight. The date marked his turn to still-lifes and portraits that were widely exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and elsewhere on the East Coast.

Condition Report: The top approx. 2 1/2 inches of the panel has been added. As seen on the verso, this top portion of the panel is a darker wood than the rest of the panel. Under u.v. light, this added portion of panel does not appear very dark under u.v. light. Instead, this top portion of panel - along with areas of the background just beneath it, and further beneath in center/center right background (to the edge of the two peaches at top and to right of largest leaf) appears to possibly be a muted pale purple under u.v. In other words, the top 2 1/2 inch portion of panel is not significantly different looking under u.v. light than surrounding areas of the background. We believe this painting has likely had two campaigns of restoration: one newer, one older. The newer, darker restoration includes an approx. 3 1/4 x 3/8 inch area in background at upper right edge, also some minor restoration in the upper right background, a spot at foreground lower right, a small area at outer lower left edge and a center left there is very fine, precise fill between some of the leaves. There is an approx. 2 x 7/8 inch area of restoration at lower left: an area of the background, shelf, leaves and the grape at far left. The older, paler restoration is seen under u.v. in parts of the background, shelf, leaves and a few of the peaches. There is also older restoration to the bunch of grapes at far left. Much of the older restoration is in the form of pale fine, precise craquelure fill as seen under u.v. (it is less likely that the darker craquelure lines under u.v. are built-up accretions/dirt). Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Description: JOHN FREDERICK PETO (american 1854-1907)/span "A GOOD BOOK, A GOOD SMOKE AND A GOOD BEER" Oil on panel 3 3/4 x 6 in. (9.5 x 15.2cm) provenance: /span'American Paintings and Sculpture.' Christie's East, October 7, 1997, lot 72. Private Collection, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Condition Report: In very good overall condition. We point out that what appears to be a sort of varnish bloom in the mug - as seen in the catalogue photo - are (apparent) small built-up areas of surface impasto; there is no indication that there is any restoration or imperfection in the mug. The may be slight restoration (unobstrusive) to a small part of the pipe bowl at right and following a small, thin vertical line (raised in the panel surface and barely visible in the catalogue photo) at lower center left. Description: JAMES EDWARD BUTTERSWORTH (american/british 1817-1894)/span "CUTTERS LEADING THE FLEET THROUGH THE SOUND, NY" Signed 'J.E. Buttersworth' bottom right, oil on canvasboard 8 x 12 in. (20.3 x 30.5cm) provenance: /spanPrivate Collection, New Jersey.

Condition Report: Much of the painting is restored. The ocean has only very slight, precise retouch; apart from restoration at lower left corner, the scattered retouch in the ocean is pinhead size and smaller - i.e. specks of fill. The sky is heavily restored, including along top edge, extending into parts of sky. The restoration at top edge is most extensive at left and center left, the largest area of restoration extending approx. 1 1/2 inches into the sky. There is a smaller area of restoration in the sky at top center, and there is scattered fill in the sky. The sails of the ships appear most likely to be restored, as they appear dark under u.v. light - particularly the front two sails of the largest ship (at left). Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: WILLIAM TROST RICHARDS (american 1833-1905)/span CALM SHORELINE Signed and dated WM. T. Richards 1875' bottom right, watercolor on paper laid to card 12 x 20 1/2 in. (30.5 x 52.1cm) provenance: /spanPrivate Collection, United Kingdom.

Condition Report: Watercolor is brighter and with richer colors than as seen in catalogue. Bottom edge of sheet with mount staining; outer edges of sheet otherwise with some toning (top edge - time staining?) and minor losses/abrasions, mostly at outer left edge with losses to sheet just within outer left edge at upper third of sheet, and at lower center left an approx. 1/8 x 15/16 inches of sheet at outer edge. There appears to be an approx. 1/8 x 1/4 inch repair in sky at upper center - this tiny area is whitish in color. Apart from these condition flaws, overall this watercolor is in generally good condition. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. Description: WILLIAM TROST RICHARDS (american 1833-1905)/span DRIFTWOOD ON THE SHORE (POSSIBLY NEW JERSEY) Signed and dated 'WM. T. Richards 69' bottom left, watercolor on paper laid to card 7 x 13 1/4 in. (17.8 x 33.7cm) provenance: /spanPrivate Collection, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Condition Report: The sheet fully laid down to card actually measuring 6 7/8 x 13 3/8 inches. There is some minor brown (from old glue?) discoloration at most of outer left edge and top edge of sheet which is covered by the overmat. Parts of the very outer top, right and left edges are slightly darker than surrounding areas, and there is an approx. 1/16 inch loss or damaged area at outer right edge at center. As fully visible in catalogue photo, there are some whitish markings/spots at left in sky, near center, along with a light diagonal mark at upper left in sky. Under magnification it appears these lightish areas/spots may possibly be restored. The sheet appears slightly abraded in these small areas. At outer right edge near top there is a slight grayish (scuff?) mark, to the left of which is an almost imperceptible thin line (?) in the sheet, which we believe is mostly likely a slight crease and not an old tear. Presumably the grayish portion of the moon is by Richards' intent and not damage. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Condition Report: Most of the painting is in original unrestored condition, though there are areas of restoration, including most prominently to part of thick tree branch at far left. There is a spot of retouch to trees at center left and a spot to bird's head. Other areas of restoration that appear paler under u.v. light (possibly because they are under the varnish?) include parts of sky at right, including apparently, most of sky along outer right edge, areas of the water at center right - including some fill, and an area of trees at lower center (the latter appears to follow the pigment brushwork and thus may not be restoration).
