Lot 1: ALESSANDRO POMI, (ITALIAN 1890-1976), "ATELIER"

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: ALESSANDRO POMI (italian 1890-1976)/span "ATELIER" Signed 'A. POMI' bottom right, oil on panel 27 5/8 x 23 7/8 in. (70.2 x 60.6cm) provenance: /spanPrivate Collection, New Mexico. exhibited:/span Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh (n.d.)

Condition Report: Generally very good condition apart from vertical aging cracks, most noticeably to artist's jacket at right; some vertical cracks in the panel - at least one apparently extends through the whole panel and is at lower right - extending form edge of panel, approximately 1 1/8 inch long. There is another vertical crack in the panel approximately 2 7/8 inches long at center right - extending from bottom edge of panel. The latter does not appear to extend through to the front of the panel. Panel has some scattered generally minor surface abrasions, small losses, scratches. This painting is in apparently very good overall condition. Under u.v. light, we note that variations in hue in much of the approximately top 1/3 of the painting appear to result from the pigments used, rather than due to restoration. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid. All transactions are governed by Freeman's Conditions of Sale.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: CORNELIS CHRISTIAAN DOMMERSEN (dutch 1842-1928)/span "VLISSINGUE - ENTRANCE TO THE SCHELDE; A THREE MASTED MERCHANT SHIP TAKING IN THEIR PILOT" Signed and dated 'Chr Dommershuizen 1890' bottom right; also signed and inscribed with title and dated verso, oil on canvas, unframed 20 1/2 x 28 in. (52 x 71cm) provenance: /spanPrivate Collection, North Carolina.

Condition Report: Not relined; no evidence of restoration under u.v. light except for possible minor retouch in the upper right corner of canvas. We note that 'thin' areas of paint, particularly in the sky and the dark hues in these areas give the possible appearance that the painting has been overcleaned and overpainted in our opinion, however, there is no evidence to support this. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. ELCHANON VERVEER, (DUTCH 1826-1900), AWAITING HIS RETURN

Lot 11: ELCHANON VERVEER, (DUTCH 1826-1900), AWAITING HIS RETURN

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: ELCHANON VERVEER (dutch 1826-1900)/span AWAITING HIS RETURN Signed and dated 'Elchanon Verveer / 1880 ft.' bottom right, oil on canvas 20 7/8 x 30 1/8 in. (53 x 76.5cm) provenance: /spanPrivate Collection, Virginia.

Condition Report: Not lined; extensive areas of apparent uneven/residual varnish render this picture somewhat difficult to actually 'read' under u.v. light. Under u.v., there are a lot of variations in surface hue which we believe are nearly all attributable to varnish inconsistencies rather than due to restoration. As such, much of the vegetation at left and part of the sea at left, along with much of bottom edge of canvas (although not limited to these areas) reads darker under u.v. light. We do think there is some minor retouch in parts of the vegetation at center left. There is also some apparent bloom in the varnish in this area. Ultimately we believe the painting is largely unrestored. Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: EDOUARD VUILLARD (french 1868-1940)/span "STILL LIFE WITH CHERRY PLUMS" With stamped signature 'E Vuillard' bottom left, oil on canvas 8 x 10 in. (20.3 x 25.4cm) provenance: /spanThe artist's studio. Renou et Colle, Paris circa 1949. Louis Bonn, Paris. Sam Salz, New York, circa 1979. An Estate, Florida. exhibited:/span Musée Toulouse-Lautrec, Albi, France, 1960, cat. no. 3. literature:/span Antoine Salomon and Guy Cogeval, Vuillard - The Inexhaustible Glance - Critical Catalogue of Paintings and Pastels, vol. 1, Wildenstein Institute, p. 18 I-20, (illus.)

Condition Report: The painting is in good condition. It has been glue/paste lined. The paint layer exhibits no cracks or obvious losses. Under examination in UV light the painting has a grey-yellow-green fluorescence. A careful and very thin, horizontal line of inpainting is seen extending from edge to edge just below the center line of the painting. Another 1 1/2" long line of inpainting covers a diagonal scratch in the upper right quadrant. Some retouching is seen in the body of the glass Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: EUGENE FROMENTIN (french 1820-1876)/span "BORDS DU NIL" Signed and dated 'Eug. Fromentin 1850' bottom right, oil on canvas 22 1/2 x 34 in. (57.2 x 86.4cm) provenance: /spanPrivate Collection, Pennsylvania. note:/span We would like to thank Dr. James Thompson for his assistance cataloguing this lot. Dr. Thompson has verified the authenticity of this work on the basis of photographs and has suggested that this work may have been executed during the artist's second trip to Algeria.

Condition Report: The painting has been glue lined to a fabric support. The heavy impasto and expressive brushmarking do not appear to have been damaged in the lining. The paint layer is in very good condition well adhered. It shows typical age crackle in a stretching tension pattern. Examination in UV light shows the presence of a synthetic resin varnish and minor retouching and reinforcement. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. Condition Report: Generally fine overall condition; we note that a cream brownish area, approximately 1 3/8 x 3 inches at widest, above nude's left hip appears darker under u.v. light than do surrounding areas. This area may well appear darker because of the pigment itself, rather than due to restoration. The same color pigment is used in the painting at center left. Description: EDWARD BURNE-JONES (british 1833-1898)/span STANDING MALE NUDE Signed with initials and dated 'EBJ / 1885' bottom center right, pencil on paper laid to paper 8 5/8 x 4 7/8 in. (21.9 x 12.4cm) (sheet) provenance: /spanPrivate Collection, Florida.

Condition Report: Sheet is affixed to card. There is some pale, diffuse toning at outer edges of sheet (sheet may have conceivably been framed with a different overmat that covered part of outer edges?). There is, additionally, some apparent surface toning/discoloration, including at lower left corner. There are scattered foxing spots, some practically minute, and the largest being in part of figure's hair at right (as visible in catalogue photo). At parts of outer top left edge and parts of top edge, there are some discolored darkened spots, with some of these brown spots apparently emanating from the backing card, at the juncture of the card and the sheet. Lot 24: WILLIAM GEORGE GILLIES, (SCOTTISH 1898-1973), "TEMPLE, MIDLOTHIAN"

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: WILLIAM GEORGE GILLIES (scottish 1898-1973)/span "TEMPLE, MIDLOTHIAN" Signed and dated 'W. Gillies / 1942' in pencil bottom right; also inscribed with title and signed in ink on label verso, watercolor on paper 20 x 25 1/2 in. (50.8 x 64.8cm) provenance: /spanPrivate Collection, The Bronx, New York.

Condition Report: Generally good overall condition with no evidence of restoration. This work may or may not have been brighter and with richer colors when originally painted, but we do not see real evidence of major fading or attenuation of colors. Examined out of frame, the actual size of this work is: 20 x 25 inches. It is actually executed on card (i.e. thin paperboard) rather than paper. The card is set loose within the frame, and is thus fully removable from the frame; it is framed with glass. At lower left corner there are some diagonal hairline creases in the surface of the card - these creases do not extend to the front of the work. Also at outer lower left corner, there is a small crumpled area and a minor surface split (i.e. the very top surface of the card is peeling away from the ground of the card). Along much of the bottom of the card, just above the outer bottom edge of the card, there is an impressed line (pressure mark) that may be from being impressed by the frame (?). There is some minor damage associated with minor losses to outer upper left and lower right corners with small amounts of the card's ground exposed in these areas. It is worth noting that the above minor surface imperfections are really not visible when the work is framed. The back of the card has extensive foxing, browning at outer edges and some surface splits in three of the four corners - again, none of these imperfections are visible on the front of the sheet. Condition Report: Framed and matted; executed on brownish laid paper, with two tape pieces top edge verso of sheet, affixed to undermat. Sheet has pale toning apart from outer edges, which are darker in color (from being covered by overmat). Scattered foxing spots and some localized soiling/discoloration. The outer lower left corner of sheet appears to be abraded, and the very outer upper right corner of sheet has a very slight loss. ANTOINE CHARLES HORACE VERNET, (FRENCH 1758-1836),

Lot 30: ANTOINE CHARLES HORACE VERNET, (FRENCH 1758-1836), "CHEVAL DE CHASSE ANGLAISE"

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: ANTOINE CHARLES HORACE VERNET (french 1758-1836)/span "CHEVAL DE CHASSE ANGLAISE" Signed 'Carle Vernet f.' bottom left, charcoal heightened with white on paper 14 1/2 x 21 1/8 in. (36.8 x 53.7cm) (sight) provenance: /spanChristie's New York, sale of February 25, 1988, lot no. 146. Private Collection, Virginia.

Condition Report: In overall fair to good condition; this lot is framed and there is a mat. It is executed on paper backed with paper, with a paper mount around each side, edging the work, along with a standard overmat and undermat. The entire backed sheet can thus be examined as it has three cloth tape pieces verso hinged to the undermat. The sight size of the drawing, excluding the applied edging, is 14 7/16 x 21 3/16 inches. Overall, including the applied edging, the work is 17 1/8 x 23 1/4 inches. The verso of the work has a lot of foxing, a stain, some paper residue from old glue, and a pencil inscription in French. The sheet has creases, some of which are seen on the verso of the backing paper. We believe these are creases, rather than restored tears. The creases include, at lower right, lower center right and at lower left, where the larger crease at lower left is approx. 4 3/4 inches long. Where some of the creases are located, the sheet has separated somewhat from the backing sheet. Sheet also displays some uneven rippling. There is some generally unobtrusive surface toning and some grayish areas in the sky vis-à-vis the otherwise surrounding tannish coloration - we think this disparity in color is by design, not restoration. There is an approx. 1/8 inch circular loss/repair in sky at upper center right and possibly some minor surface smudging. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Description: ATTRIBUTED TO GEORGE HEMNING MASON (british 1818-1872)/span STUDIES OF GOATS Oil on board 7 3/4 x 11 1/2 in. (19.7 x 29.2cm) provenance: /spanPrivate Collection, Virginia.

Condition Report: Under u.v. light no evidence of restoration except for minor retouch at parts of upper right edge and at lower left corner. The work itself is an oil on paper, laid down - versus what is printed in the catalogue description. At center left, there are two tears which are joined, one approx.. 1 1/2 inches, the other approx.. 1 5/8 inches. At upper left, there is a raised area of the sheet - this is due to space between the sheet and the ground. There are some visible, albeit generally minor surface scratches to surface of painting. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: ARTHUR FITZWILLIAM TAIT (american 1819-1905)/span HOUNDS ON THE SCENT Signed and dated 'A. F. Tait 99' bottom right, watercolor over pencil on paper 4 3/4 x 8 in. (12.1 x 20.3cm) provenance: /spanPrivate Collection, Virginia.

Condition Report: Framed in a partially ebonized carved wood (walnut?) frame, roughly in an Eastlake style. The watercolor is on paper that is somewhat unevenly cut and laid down. We see no evidence of restoration. As seen in the catalogue photo, at lower right, roughly below the rightmost dog, and at lower left, between the front legs of the leftmost dog, the sheet color is a pale brown. We presume this coloration is intended by Tait, and is thus not a condition flaw. There appears to be some very slight, unobtrusive scattered foxing. The sheet has uneven cockling; it does not lie flat in all areas. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. Condition Report: As noted in catalogue, this is a double-sided drawing on laid paper.
