Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: * Naval General Service Medal 1793-1840, one clasp Syria (J. F. MacMichael, Naval Instr.), impressed naming, very fine, the medal is uncleaned and retains the original ribbon. John Fisher MacMichael's appointment as Naval Instructor and Schoolmaster dates from 18th October 1838. The Navy List of that year shows only 11 holders of that rank and MacMichael was serving on H.M.S. Pembroke, a third rate ship of 74 guns which had been launched in 1812. The Reverend John Fisher MacMichael's career followed an unusual path, only three years of which were spent at sea as a Naval Instructor (1838-41). Educated at Richmond Grammar School, North Yorkshire and graduated in 1837 from Trinity College Cambridge. He became Master of University College London before shortly serving in the Royal Navy. Following his time at sea he returned to an academic life ashore as Headmaster of Burton Grammar School and then Ripon Grammar School. An Honorary Canon of Ripon, he died in 1871. (1)
