GASPAR PEETER VERBRUGGEN, FLOWER GARLAND WITH CARTOUCHE, oil on canvas (relined), 82.5 x 68.5 cm

Lot 1199: GASPAR PEETER VERBRUGGEN, FLOWER GARLAND WITH CARTOUCHE, oil on canvas (relined), 82.5 x 68.5 cm

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Gasper Verbruggen was one of the leading Flemish painters of flower still lifes in the 17th century. His often opulent depictions carry forward the tradition of the previous generation, of artists such as Daniel Seghers and Jan Davidzs. de Heem. This painting has the characteristic composition of a cartouche surrounded fruits and flowers, amongst which are roses, tulips, sweat pea, anemone, field, bindweed, larkspur, hibiscus and martagon lily. Unlike other similar compositions the cartouche does not depict a religious scene, normally giving the still life a Christian meaning. Nonetheless, the Christian religion is represented by the grapes in the centre of the composition, symbolizing the Eucharist. Sam Segal dates the present painting between 1665 and 1670 and compares it to signed works by the artist amongst others in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Lyon.

Description: According to legend, Rufina and her sister Justa were daughters of a potter. After having destroyed a statue of a god in a pagan procession they were arrested by the Roman govenor. Rufina was beheaded and burnt and Justa was drowned in a well. Both martyrs are the patron saints of potters as well as the city of Seville, and have as a result been portrayed by numerous spanish painter including Diego Velázquez and Francisco Goya. Benito Navarrete Prieto has suggested the author of the present painting to be the Seville artist Sebastián de Llanos y Valdés. In 1989 however, Enrique Valdivieso attributed the picture to an artist from the circle of Llanos y Valdés and dated it to 1660. Llanos y Valdés, who was descended from the lower nobility and appears to have been financially independant, studied under Francisco de Herrera before running his own workshop from 1630. This large format painting, in an ornate old frame, may therefore be from a student of the workshop.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Bernhard Keilhau, called Monsù Bernardo, was a painter from Denmark who worked in Holland and Germany before moving to Italy. After a short sojourn in Venice he moved to Rome where he lived from 1656 until his death in 1687. He was influenced by the works of the Carravaggists and the circle of Bamboccianti. Many of his works depict every day scenes in large-scale half figure compositions. The present painting depicts a family in a kitchen, the woman cracking nuts, the man pouring wine from a jug, between them their child holds a vase of flowers and the „Canzone delle lodi di Madonna Tenerina" by Giulio Cesare Croce.

JAN FRIS, STILL LIFE WITH PIPE, LITTLE STOVE AND CLAY JUGG, oil on canvas (relined), 58 x 51 cm

Lot 1208: JAN FRIS, STILL LIFE WITH PIPE, LITTLE STOVE AND CLAY JUGG, oil on canvas (relined), 58 x 51 cm

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: This painting was created during the last year of the artist's life, about which little is known. Here, Jan Fris, at the age of 45, makes reference to an earlier composition from 1665 (Lempertz sale, May 12, 2012, lot 1286). Both paintings depict the same objects, with the exception of the two chestnuts. However, the arrangements differ: an eathenware jug with the Amsterdam coat of arms, a clay pipe emitting a fine line of smoke, a broken clay warmer with extinguishing pieces of coal, loose tobacco on a piece of paper, a tall, eight-cornered glass flute, and a deck of cards. The clear presence of horizontal and vertical axes creates a strong sense of calm and order. Another aspect is the monochrome use of colour in the manner of the "Monochromen Banketjes" and the pleasant light flowing over the objects. Certain elements emphasize the iconographic connotation of such pictures, for example still lifes with tobacco are Vanitas paintings. Their meaning is one of caution, to make the viewer reflect and contemplate. The entire oeuvre of Jan Fris is not extensive. In addition to still lifes with tobacco he also painted fruits and other Vanitas variations featuring musical instruments or books. Figural works by him are not known to exist. .Das Stöchvchen mit der Glut, Spilekarten Tabak und statt Krabben einige Nüsse. Lot 1218: LUCA GIORDANO, CHRIST AND SAINT MARY MAGDALENE, oil on canvas (relined), 129.5 x 93 cm

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: This painting forms part of a pair which was published by Alfonso Pérez Sánchez in 2001. The counterpart, depicting "David with the Head of Goliath" was sold ten years ago and is today in the "Museo de Pintura y Escultura", Valladolid (ill. in A. Perez Sanchez op. cit). The composition of both pictures centres around a half-length figure and the technique makes use of bold, quick brushstrokes which capture perfectly the bright daylight. Christ, represented as a gardener with a grey felt hat and a rake over his shoulder, appears somewhat more akin to a Neapolitan fisherman than the divine Savior; this is also true for the figure of David in "David with the Head of Goliath". Luca Giordano, emerging from the Neapolitan school which based itself on the art of Caravaggio and Ribera, is one of the most exceptional and prolific personalities of Italian Baroque painting, an artist with great virtuosity, energy and imagination. In the early 1650's, he travelled to Northern Italy, staying in Bologna, Lombardy and mostly Venice. Among the painters of Venice, it was Veronese who influenced him the most, leading him to use a lighter and more colourful palette. The present painting and its pair were, according to Pérez Sánchez, painted during this period.

EDWAERT COLLIER, VANITAS WITH CROWN, SCEPTRE, JEWELLERY AND GLOBE, oil on canvas (relined), 84.5 x 70.5 cm

Lot 1219: EDWAERT COLLIER, VANITAS WITH CROWN, SCEPTRE, JEWELLERY AND GLOBE, oil on canvas (relined), 84.5 x 70.5 cm

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: In this vanitas still life Edwaert Collier alludes to power and wealth through the use of symbols such as the crown and scepter, goblet and globe as well as a treasure chest full of medals, coins, pearl necklaces and rings. A portrait of the Emperor Augustus, the mighty ruler of antiquity, can also be seen in the open book. This depiction of might and wealth is undermined by Collier through subtle symbols of fugacity and the words of warning with which he addresses the beholder. On the left-hand side a dying candle can be seen, a symbol of death. On the right-hand side a slip of paper sticks out from the pages of a book, it reads: „Nemo ante mortem beatus dici potest", the famous sentence that Solons said to King Croesus: "No one can be called happy before his death". Edwaert Collier was famous for such opulent vanitas still lifes that warned the viewer against the earthly pursuit of power, wisdom and wealth. Collier was born in Breda and was active in Haarlem and Leiden, where in 1673 he was registered as member of the Lucas guild. A sojourn in England is also known; interesting insofar as some of his tromp l´oeils (another of Collier´s specialties) show English newspapers and language of the time. In general, Collier´s paintings reveal his strong affinity towards words and literature. In this painting the open book depicts the frontispiece of the German translation of the novel "Prinz Kalloandro" by the Italian poet Giovanni Ambrogio Marini, published in 1656 by Johann Wilhelm von Steubenberg.

ALESSANDRO MAGNASCO, RIVER LANDSCAPE WITH ANGLER AND LAUNDRESSES, oil on canvas (relined), 69 x 93 cm

Lot 1220: ALESSANDRO MAGNASCO, RIVER LANDSCAPE WITH ANGLER AND LAUNDRESSES, oil on canvas (relined), 69 x 93 cm

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Not known until recently, this painting from a Spanish collection shows the appreciation of visionary landscapes in Alessandro Magnasco's early works, as explained by Giancarlo Sestieri. It depicts foothills before mountains and a river, several houses in the centre and snow-capped mountains in the distance. With quick and energetic, yet decidedly placed brushstrokes, Magnasco only alluded to forms in his conversion of scenes to canvas, here evoking the Lombardian foothills of his country. The landscape sets the stage for the small figures that go about their simple daily tasks. The style and composition of this painting are characteristic of Magnasco, as are the cool colours of blue, green, brown and white. Single flickers of light are emitted from the largely dark base coat. Bernard Aikema confirms the attribution to Alessandro Magnosco after examination of the original.

A. VAN DER MARCK, TROMPE L´OEIL WITH HUNTING GEAR, oil on canvas (relined), 113 x 103 cm

Lot 1225: A. VAN DER MARCK, TROMPE L´OEIL WITH HUNTING GEAR, oil on canvas (relined), 113 x 103 cm

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: This painting is currently the only known work signed by A. van der Marck. His style is typical of the late 17th/early 18th centuries and is one shared by artists such as Christoffel Pierson, Frans de Hamilton, Cornelis Biltius and, in particular, Cornelis van der Meulen. An extraordinary painting by the latter, in a Westphalian private collection (Erika Gemar-Koetzsch, Dutch Still Life Painters of the 17th Century, 1995, vol. I, p. 171), possesses virtually all the same features of our painting, although the composition differs slightly. It appears therefore that van der Marck knew of this painting or a similar work by van der Meulen. Characteristic of such trompe l'oeil paintings is the whitewashed wall or corner on which the hunting equipment and suchlike hangs. Aside from the usual repertoire of these still lifes, including dead animals, hunter's horn, hunting pouch and knife, or the hood used in falconry, we also see an unusual draped carpet to the right, instead of the expected wooden door as in van der Meulen's painting. Such a carpet was not a common element in these paintings. The broken pipe and the "floating feather" allude to fleeting moments.

FRANZ WERNER VON TAMM, HUNTING STILL LIFE, oil on canvas (relined), 48.5 x 60.5 cm

Lot 1226: FRANZ WERNER VON TAMM, HUNTING STILL LIFE, oil on canvas (relined), 48.5 x 60.5 cm

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: The attribution of this painting to Hans Werner von Tamm is confirmed by a letter dated May 12, 2005, from Ursula J.A. de Goede-Broug, expert of RKD in The Hague. The painter, born in Hamburg in 1658, was an internationally active personality. From 1685 to 1695 he lived in Rome where he married the daughter of an Augsburg goldsmith and socialised with many well-known artists of the time. At the end of the century, he was summoned to Vienna as court painter for Emperor Leopold. Von Tamm specialised in still lifes from very early on. His hunt scenes were much sought after because of their decorative arrangements. This is also true for our painting that features an unusual red leather bag in its centre.

Description: The pair of history paintings depict two important events from the Book of Exodus. Firstly, the Crossing of the Red Sea, the narrative which sees the Israelites flee Egypt pursued by the Pharaoh and his soldiers. To save them, Moses parts the Red Sea and thus enables them to cross safely. The water however then rejoins and the Pharaoh's soldiers drown (Book of Exodus, 14). The second narrative depicts the Israelites doubting God in the desert due to their terrible thirst. Moses goes to a rock near Horeb and, as God ordered, strikes it, resulting in water spouting from the stone (Book of Exodus, 17). The paintings show the two biblical scenes in a dynamic, complex composition whose structure one can clearly decipher despite the sketchy brushstrokes.

Description: In a fantasy landscape of mountains and castles a caravan of bohemians rests at the edge of a forest. With his usual virtuosity, Ferg depicts a richly filled brouhaha of figures. Two riders are involved in a friendly chat with a group of fortune-tellers while nearby a fire is being prepared. Surrounded by horses and playing children the women are cooking the evening meal. Delightful details such as the man in the foreground pulling a goose out of his bag all amuse the eye. A charming depiction of Bohemian life, the whole scene is rendered in cool brownish tones suggesting the light of a far sunset.

Lot 1233: FRANZ DE PAULA FERG, SCUFFLE IN FRONT OF A TAVERN, oil on copper, 26 x 36 cm

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Ferg continued into the 18th century the depiction of bamboccianti scenes which were initially conceived by painters such as Lingelbach, Dujardin or Wouwerman. Set in vast landscapes, his compositions of everyday life charm the viewer with their detailed richness. The present monogrammed painting is a typical example of his work. Depicted in dominantly ochre tones, interrupted only by light pink and blue hues, the scene offers the view of a motley crowd: scuffling men, calm card players and resting travelers in front of a tavern. An enchanting composition which stretches into a wide Italianate landscape with a castle. The picture, with its charming figural staffage and dynamic composition, can be dated to after 1724, the year Ferg settled in London. This date can be assumed due to the presence of the monogram FV which appears in most of his paintings from the English period. The V is supposedly indicative of the English spelling of Ferg's hometown Vienna.

ROSALBA CARRIERA, and Workshop, PORTRAIT OF YOUNG WOMAN WITH MONKEY, Pastel, 66 x 55.5 cm

Description: In addition to this pastel portrait by the famous Venetian, Rosalba Carriera, there exists a further version in the Louvre, Paris (Sani op. cit. No. 117, ill. 93). The occurrence of such a case is rare in the work of Carriera, however the quality of our picture renders it so convincing that Valentine Toutain will enter it in her forthcoming monograph on her. The identity of the sitter can only be speculated. (Sani op. cit.). The Parisian picture originally belonged to the King of France and thus it is possible that both portraits were created there. Rosalba stayed in Paris in 1720/21. Here, she enjoyed a monumental success. The painting of parading princes, famous personalities, celebrated, beautiful women and suchlike, had already begun a few years earlier. The powerful and the beautiful of the time wanted to be portrayed by her. In order to accommodate such a demand, Carriera was assisted in her work, mostly by her beloved sister Naneta. Following her death in 1738, Rosalba fell into such a deep period of mourning that at times she was unable to work. Later, Angioletta Sartori and Margherita Terzi came to assist her in her studio. In the case of our work, one of the most interesting aspects is that it was not trimmed after completion. The edges therefore still show traces of the creation process.

LEONARDO COCCORANTE, TWO CAPRICCI WITH HARBOUR SCENES IN THE NIGHT, oil on canvas (relined), 51 x 73 each

Description: These landscapes by the Neapolitan painter Leonardo Coccorante are distinguished by their temperamental, quick brushstokes. This style of Coccorante's immediately differentiates itself from that of his teacher's, Jan Frans van Bloemen, as do the subjects of his work, in particular his harbour scenes with their coastlines featuring fantastical ruins and antique buildings, all qualities making him a readily identifiable artist. The relatively small figural staffage results in the appearance of extensive space and unusually large structures. In the 1730's, Coccorante participated in the decoration of the royal castle in Naples. Nicola Spinosa has confirmed the attribution of these paintings to Leonardo Coccorante.

Description: This monumental painting shows various exotic birds surrounding a fountain in a park. Mina Gregori identified it as an important work by Pietro Neri Scacciati, who was famous for his animal depictions, and will therefore mention it in a forthcoming publication. Neri Scacciati followed Bartolommeo Bimbi as a painter of animals for the various residences of the Medici family, particularly for their Villa Ambrogiana at the time of Grand-Duke Gian Gastone. Only recently has the artistic personality of this painter become better known. In the Still Life Museum of Poggio a Caiano, further works by him are exhibited.

Description: The first reference to this painting known to us is from the "L'Osservatore Romano" of August 4, 1938. At that time the work was owned by the dentist Michele Sicca who was a well-known personality in the Catholic anti-fascist movement in Rome. During those years he emigrated to London and later to the United States where he died in 1945. The present owner acquired the painting there approximately 30 years ago. What is immediately visible to the eye is confirmed by X-ray: that over-painting has taken place on an existing painting. Not only were these paintings by two different artists, but by painters from two different art epochs. While the figure in the foreground is still related to the '600 tradition, the other elements in the picture - the Moor, the boy in a green robe, the figure wearing a turban, and the architecture - clearly point to 18th century culture. Jacopo Scarpa identifies the hand of Giovanni Batista Tiepolo without doubt, (cf. J. Scarpa op. cit.), while he suggests that Antonio Belucci painted the figure of King David. Why did Tiepolo paint over an already existing picture? Was it damaged, was it perhaps unfinished, or was it no longer to the liking of its owner? We do not know. Where and when could this intervention have happened? There are many indications that this took place in Würzburg (s. Scarpa op. cit.). For example on the one hand, the features of the boy in the green robe are known through other works by Tiepolo, they are his son's Lorenzo (née 1736). He would have been 14 or 15 years old in our painting. Between 1750 and 1753, Tiepolo stayed in Würzburg with his sons Domenico and Lorenzo. Barely 40 years before, Antonio Belucci, commissioned by the Prince Bishop Lothar Franz von Schönborn, was working here. His painting could have come into the hands of Tiepolo there.

Description: The relation between this "Bozetto" and Giambattista Tiepolo's frescoes in the Palazzo Archinto in Milan was discovered by Morassi in 1962. All subsequent Tiepolo researchers have confirmed this, the iconography and style being obvious. Tiepolo's grandiose career as a painter of ceiling frescoes began with these 1731 Milan frescoes and the previously created ones of the Palazzi Sandi (1721-25) and Dolfin (1725-30) in Venice. Our Bozetto gives an impression of a planned, but never completed ceiling picture for the Palazzo Archinto, now demolished. A second sketch for this project is in London (Hasson Collection, A. Pallucchini op. cit. No. 60). Bacchus presents Ariane, reclining in the same position, with the crown that he hurls high into the sky creating the aurora according to Ovid's Metamorphoses. Especially enchanting in our painting is the sky's detail washed in pink. Tiepolo's perfect, sponteneous brushstroke and his unimitale glowing colours are expressed in the small but exquisite work.

FRANCESCO ZUCCARELLI, LANDSCAPE WITH THE TRANSFIGURATION OF CHRIST, oil on canvas (relined), 64 x 76 cm

Lot 1241: FRANCESCO ZUCCARELLI, LANDSCAPE WITH THE TRANSFIGURATION OF CHRIST, oil on canvas (relined), 64 x 76 cm

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Francesco Zuccarelli is considered one of the most extraordinary Italian landscape artists of the 18th century. His fame becomes apparent when looking at this painting with a view to a Northern Italian landscape to the right. These works often had a staffage of delicate figures. During his training in Rome, Zuccarelli worked with the figural painter Giovanni Maria Morandi. Our painting would have been created earlier, yet still influenced by his Roman impressions and before his first journey to England in 1742. Unlike in any other of his pictures, Zuccarelli here combines landscape and figural depiction into a uniform composition. He accomplishes this on one hand by colour, the pale blue of Christ's robe dominating, and secondly with composition. On the earthly level he shows the Apostles Peter, John and Jacob, while Christ, Moses and the prophet Elias have already ascended. The cloud formation bearing them still partly touches the ground while at the same time the branches of a tall tree reach into the clouds. We thank Prof. Bernard Aikema for the confirmation that this painting is an outstanding example of the art of Francesco Zuccarelli.

FRANCESCO GUARDI, SAINT BARBARA, oil on canvas (relined), 35 x 26 cm

Lot 1242: FRANCESCO GUARDI, SAINT BARBARA, oil on canvas (relined), 35 x 26 cm

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Francesco Guardi became well known mostly through his Venice-Capricci and views. Alongside this he also produced some figurative works, among which our Modelletto can be counted. The standing female figure, probably Saint Barbara, is also found in a drawing by Guardi in the Museo Correr (A. Morassi: Guardi. Tutti i disegni, Venice 1975, no. 156, ill. 158). Pallucchini made a link between this drawing and Guardi's painting of two female allegories found in the Ringling Museum in Sarasota. Morassi, however, considers the drawing in the Museo Correr to be a sketch for an unknown altar picture from Francesco Guardi and has dated it to 1770-80. This could also be said for our as yet unpublished Modelletto. A similar compositional pattern, characterised by the low horizon and the large single figure standing in the forground, was depicted by Guardi in a painting ''Segnender Hl. Nikolaus'', in the Castle Miramare in Triest.

Description: Antonio Diziani was one of the leading landscape painters of Venice working in the second half of the 18th century. His father, Gaspare Diziani, was also a painter but it was above all his contemporaries, in particular Francesco Zuccarelli and Giuseppe Zais, who influenced him. In this painting Diziani uses a favourite motif of Dutch 17th century painting which was popularised throughout Europe by Philips Wouwerman. The aucthenticity of the painting has been confirmed by Professor Federica Spadotto on the basis of a photograph.

Description: This painting from the former Beltrami collection, Milan, was considered to be an authentic work by Giambattista Tiepolo, until in 1962 Morassi attributed it to his son Giandomenico. Adriano Mariuz included it in his catalogue raisonné of Giandomenico Tiepolo in 1970. The attribution has been confirmed by Bernard Aikema who has examined the original painting, supporting Mariuz´ dating to the late 1770´s. It was probably painted after Giandomenico´s return from Spain to Venice. The rendering of light, the palette, the painterly quality and the composition of the work are all in accordance with the Venetian tradition.
