DIETRICH, CALLED DIETRICY, attributed to, LANDSCAPE AT TIVOLI, oil on canvas, 92 x 72 cm

Lot 1249: DIETRICH, CALLED DIETRICY, attributed to, LANDSCAPE AT TIVOLI, oil on canvas, 92 x 72 cm

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Dietrich was already in his youth one of the favourite painters of King August II of Saxony. As such he received in 1743 a royal grant and travelled to Italy. He returned in 1744 and settled in Dresden where he was first director of the picture gallery and afterwards became professor at the Dresden Roayal Academy. Known under the name of Dietricy he was one of the main exponents of the artistic eclecticism of the time. His paintings cover a wide range of subjects drawn in the styles of the Dutch, Italian or French schools. Nonetheless, Winckelmann called him 'the Raphael of landscape'. Even if slightly exaggerated this sentence acknowledged Dietrich's original training as a landscape painter. The present composition depicting the waterfall at Tivoli with idyllic figural scenes testifies to Dietrich's virtuosity and may have been produced after his return to Dresden. The soft modelling of landscape, the dry harmony of the natural elements, amongst which architecture is not more than a pretext, as well as the cool pictorial light favour the idea that the picture was painted after his trip to Italy.

FRANCOIS BOHER, LANDSCAPE WITH WATERFALL AND FIGURAL STAFFAGE, oil on canvas (relined), 64 x 83 cm

Lot 1250: FRANCOIS BOHER, LANDSCAPE WITH WATERFALL AND FIGURAL STAFFAGE, oil on canvas (relined), 64 x 83 cm

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: François Boher was the son of a stonemason and worked first as a sculptor before becoming a painter. He travelled, like many other French artists of the time, to Italy, in order to complete his education. Boher belongs to the great tradition of French landscape painters of the 18th Century. His paintings are influenced by work of Claude Vernets, Jacob Philipp Hackert and other painters of the 18th Century. This painting uses well known motifs of French landscape painting such as the imposing waterfall, the antique temple and the figures fishing.

JACOB PHILIPP HACKERT, THE PORT OF LIVORNO I, oil on canvas (relined), 40.5 x 62.5 cm

Lot 1251: JACOB PHILIPP HACKERT, THE PORT OF LIVORNO I, oil on canvas (relined), 40.5 x 62.5 cm

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Since its integration into the Florentine territory in the early finfteenth century, Livorno was, after Pisa, the most important harbour city in Tuscany. It retainted its importance into the 18th century when, after the death of the last Medici, the Grand Duchy of Tuscany was passed to the secundo-geniture of the house of Habsburg. Hackert painted this view, together with three other views, during a stop in Florence on a return trip from Switzerland to Rome. During this stay he was entertained by the Grand Duke Peter Leopold, the later Emperor Leopold II. The present painting is the first of a series of four depictions of the harbour of Livorno, which were once in the collection of Tsaress Maria Feodorowna (the second painting sold as Lot 1252). The harbour, and the city itself, are only visible in the background, whilst the picture is dominated by a mighty tree in the right foreground and a group of inhabitants, who, in the shade of the tree, offer fruit for sale. The silhouette of Livorno is placed against a golden, glowing sky, in the harbour there is a squadron of ships.

JACOB PHILIPP HACKERT, THE PORT OF LIVORNO II, oil on canvas (relined), 37.5 x 60 cm

Lot 1252: JACOB PHILIPP HACKERT, THE PORT OF LIVORNO II, oil on canvas (relined), 37.5 x 60 cm

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: The present painting is the second in a series of four depictions of Livorno harbour by Hackert, once found in the collection of Zarin Maria Feodorowna in Castle Pavlovsk (the first picture in this series can be found under Lot 1251). In its depiction of the Porto Medico, the picture shows the newest harbour dock at Livorno, built in 1572 to augment the older Darsena Vecchia. The entrance to the older harbour was marked by the high spire of the Fortezza Vecchia, seen at the middle-right of the picture. On its left the eight-sided Torre del Marzocco, clad in white marble, rises up out of the water. The foreground of the first picture features a geater number of characters including oriental traders. The third painting of this series (up until 2005 in the Schäfer Collection in Schweinfurt), features the older harbour dock in Livorno, the Darsena Vecchia whilst the final fourth view depicts a dramatic storm and a sinking ship with Livorno harbour in the background. Etching was produced after the four paintings in this series which Hackert dedicated to the Grand Duke of Tuscany. He in turn showed his approval of the paintings and etchings by presenting the artist with a valuable diamond ring featuring his portrait.

Lot 1256: HANS SEBALD LAUTENSACK, attributed to, TOWNSCAPE WITH A RIVER, Pen and brown ink, 19 x 27 cm

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Browned, some holes, backed. Hans Sebald Lautensack produced similar town views in his etchings. As far as we can determine, this composition is not found in print, therefore the execution after a sketch is questionable. Lautensack appears to have painted only occasionally. In the history of German graphics he occupies a major position as a talented engraver. Browned, several reinforced holes.

LORENZO TIEPOLO, attributed to, THE VIRGIN WITH CHILD, Pastel, 50 x 30 cm

Lot 1261: LORENZO TIEPOLO, attributed to, THE VIRGIN WITH CHILD, Pastel, 50 x 30 cm

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: This pastel is based on a composition by his father Giambattista Tiepolo and represents an early work by Lorenzo. His style took later a different direction, the forms solidified, the signature became more precise and compact and the magnificent Venetian colour of his work reached an unprecedented glory. The technique of pastel practised by Lorenzo during his Würzburg stay also became masterfully refined. Lorenzo Tiepolo's influence on the development of late 18th century painting is still underestimated. He died in Madrid at the age of 40, only five years after his famous father.

Description: Vertical fold to the centre. Browned. Verso named and signed by the artist. In 1776 Desprez won the Prix de Rome, later that year he travelled to Italy and, over the following years, slowly made his way south to Sicily with Denon and Delaborde. From this region he created numerous drawings that served as sketches for Saint-Nons "Voyage Pittoresque". Our sheet is however not entered in this volume. Several other drawings from Sicily were also created in 1778 and it is likely therefore that ours comes from this year.
