Lot 1149: UTRECHT SCHOOL, mid-17th century, DIANA HUNTING WITH HER NYMPHS, oil on panel, 52 x 69 cm (oval)

Description: The present picture, the provenance of which can be traced back to the early 20th century, was traditionally regarded as a work by Nicolaus Knupfer. Jurij Ivanovic Kuznetzov had also twice confirmed the work to be from the hand of Knupfer in the catalogue raisonnés of 1964 and 1974. Only in 2005 was the work discounted as by this artist in the catalogue raisonné by Jo Saxton. She believed the mannerist treatment of the naked female bodies as well as the meticulous depiction of the turbans pointed to a very different style, one which did not fit the Leipzig-born Knupfer. Aside from the unsolved question of attribution, the high quality of the image remains as seen in the broad range of brown tones used in the depiction of Diana and her entourage leaving for the hunt. Whilst on the right hand side of the picture the landscape opens up, the Goddess of the hunt and her companions gather on the left on the edge of a wood. Almost as a demonstration of his ability at depicting the human anatomy, the artist has placed two female nudes in the foreground, one viewed from the front and one from the back.

DANIEL JANSZ. THIEVAERT, ABRAHAM AND ISAAC, oil on canvas (relined), 162 x 188 cm

Lot 1150: DANIEL JANSZ. THIEVAERT, ABRAHAM AND ISAAC, oil on canvas (relined), 162 x 188 cm

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: The work of the painter Daniel Jansz Thievaert has not yet been sufficiently studied. He is therefore an artist whose best unsigned works are often attributed to other painters - for example, the great painting "Queen of Sheba before Solomon" in the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin. Although signed it was for a long time thought to be the work of Jacob de Wet. Werner Sumowski has brought to light more than a dozen works by Thievaert and traced his artistic development from a painter of small history paintings in the manner of Jacob de Wet and Willem de Poorter to a painter of monumental figural compositions. Among these paintings is one of his most important works "Levite and his concubine in Gibeah" in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Our painting is considered to be, by Sumowski, a precursor to this major work. Similarities can be observed in the colour palette, depiction of drapery and types of figures. The ability to attribute both paintings to the same hand can be further proven through the similar depiction of heads, the clothes of the figures and the buildings in the background along with the clouds over the landscape and the still life in the foreground.

SIMON DE VLIEGER, STORMY SEA, oil on panel, 66 x 99 cm

Lot 1151: SIMON DE VLIEGER, STORMY SEA, oil on panel, 66 x 99 cm

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: This large-scale marine painting depicts a dramatic sea storm in which some Dutch sailing ships are caught up. One of the ships has crashed into the cliffs and the crew attempt desperately to reach the bow in order to save themselves. Another ship in the background floats helplessly whilst a frigate in the centre has escaped the dangerous cliffs and tries to reach the open sea. This frigate bears the Dutch flag and on its rear the "Halve Maan", the halfmoon that identifies it as a ship of the "Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie". Such depictions reminded viewers of the dangers of the overseas-trade on which the wealth of the Dutch nation was based. In his marine paintings, Simon de Vlieger followed Jan Porcellis and the style of the early Dutch marine painting, evident through his monochrome palette based on grey and brown tones. De Vlieger was a contemporary of Jan van Goyen with whom his paintings shared features such as the low horizon or the composition of the sky and the clouds which the artist uses to define the pictorial space and create atmosphere. Jan Kelch dates this painting to between 1642 and 1645 and compares it to other depictions of stormy seas by Simon de Vlieger, amongst others, in the Castello Sforzesco, Milan (inv. no. 1226) and a signed painting sold at Lempertz on 17th May 1999 (lot 1174).

Description: Abraham van Cuylenborch was a pupil of Cornelis van Poelenbrugh and his landscapes specialise in the depiction of grottos, listed as "grotje" in Dutch inventories of the 17th century. This large picture is a characteristic work by the artist from Utrecht. The picturesque, classical architecture and the nude bathers are all elements that were first popularised by his teacher. Characteristic of van Cuylenborch is the use of perspective which allows the creation of width and depth in the pictorial field.

Description: This portrait of a nobleman that has already been attributed to Velázquez, Sebastien Bourdon und Jan Cossier in the past is now considered to be a painting by Jan van der Reyn, a pupil of Anthony van Dyck´s. This attribution was made by Jan Kosten, RKD, The Hague, whom we thank for this reference. The present work possibly depicts Henri Coiffier de Ruzé, Marquis de Cinq-Mars. Lot 1157: JUSEPE DE RIBERA, attributed to, SAINT MARY MAGDALENE, oil on canvas (relined), 69.3 x 54.5 cm

Description: José Manuel Arnaiz compares this representation of Saint Mary Magalene with the "Assumption of Saint Mary Magdalene" (Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando) and the "Saint Agnes" (Gemäldegalerie, Dresden) by Jusepe de Ribera. According to him the female saint is Saint Agnes, but it is most certain that the penitent Saint Mary Magdalene is represented. Acording to Arnaiz, Nicola Spinosa dates the painting between 1644 and 1648.

PIETER GYSELS, LANDSCAPE WITH CARTS AND FIGURES, oil on panel (parqueted), 44 x 30 cm

Lot 1158: PIETER GYSELS, LANDSCAPE WITH CARTS AND FIGURES, oil on panel (parqueted), 44 x 30 cm

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: The finely painted landscape shows a popular and characteristic theme of Flemish art of the 17th century: A wooded landscape with peasants. In the centre a path, lined with tall trees, leads into the distance. One sees peasants in coaches, heywagons, and carts, returning from their work. At the wayside women talk with a wanderer. The composition reveal characteristic elements of Flemish landscapes. The pictorial space is divided diagonally in fore-, middle- and background that are characterized by brown, green and blue tones. While the tall trees in the fore- and middle ground reach the whole height of the composition, the left side offers a distant vista with a town. Such landscapes evoked a peaceful country life and were at the same time evidence of a pride about the native landscape. Peter Gysels was influenced by Jan Brueghel the Elder whose pupil he presumably was.

Description: The attribution to Pieter de Molijn has been confirmed by Dr. Hans-Ulrich Beck. Pieter de Molijn was, along with Jan van Goyen, Salomon Ruysdael and others, one of the many Haarlem artists to modernise Dutch landscape painting, giving it above all a new naturalism. Whilst de Molijn´s early works from this period are dominated by grey, green and brown tones, the present painting, from the 1640´s, is characterised by a brighter palette.

Description: This picture by Willem De Poorter depicts a scene that was popular in genre paintings of the 17th century; an innocent man being deceived by a fortune-teller and his accomplice. The artist has placed the scene in a landscape with ruins that is largely painted using monochrome colours, the bright colours of the figures juxtapose with this. De Poorter specialized in such genre scenes and small biblical history paintings. The preparatory drawing has been seen through the use of infrared reflectography. It shows the figural composition sketched in quick strokes as well as some changes that the artist made.

Description: Jan Mytens was the leading portraitist of Dutch nobility and patricians in The Hague. This high quality portrait of a lady is an early work by the artist. Verso, it bears an inscription stating that it was painted in 1645 and that the sitter is 56. Because of the date, the size and the composition, the present portrait is the likely counterpart to a portrait of a man with gloves that is monogrammed and dated 1645 (whereabouts unknown, RKD IB no. 106591). Alexandra Bauer has confirmed the authenticity of the painting and considers it to be the earliest female portrait by Jan Mytens.

Description: The work of the Antwerp genre painter Abraham Willemsen has only been more clearly defined within art history within the last 20 years. Our painting was only known of until now from copies and is probably identical with the one found in the Degenhardt Collection in Wuppertal, documented in the archives of the RKD. The number of famous copies suggests it was one of Willemsen's major works (for example Christies's Amsterdam,14.11.1991, lot 40, and Van Ham, Cologne, 2002, and described as by a 'German master'). Willemsen worked for a long period in France, in close proximity to the Le Nain brothers and worked collaboratively on paintings with Jan van Kessel in Antwerp including a 'gallery picture' which can be found today in the Staatliche Kunsthalle in Karlsruhe. A microscopic examination found that the monogram KD (Karel Dujardin) under Willemsen's monogram was a later addition.

Description: and JAN VAN BALEN 1611 Antwerp - 1654 Antwerp In his expertise, Klaus Ertz dated the present painting to the late1640s, as ''one of the few examples of the collaboration of the painters Jan Breughel the Younger and Jan van Balen (1611 Antwerpen - 1654 Antwerpen)'' where the first was responsible for the landscape and animals, and the second for the figures. The artists' fathers Jan Brueghel the Elder and Hendrik van Balen were already very successful artists and therefore the sons received their first apprenticeships in their fathers' studios. Both sons travelled to Italy, Jan Brueghel the Younger from 1622 to 1625, when he returned after learning of the death of his father, and Jan van Balen from 1639 to 1641 when he also returned to Antwerp after his brother's death in Rome. The ''Allegory of the Water'' shows Amphitrite, the goddess of the sea, on the edge of a wooded landscape with a view over the sea. The picture is saturated with references to the element of water, from the various types of sealife, including flying fish, shells, crabs, coral or pearls. The precursor of this collaboration between the sons can be found in a collaboration by the fathers: this picture, painted in 1611, of the same theme, also displays a similar composition. This work is found today in the Galleria Doria Pamphilj in Rome. However the sons did not copy the picture, but instead borrowed from it to produce their own interpretation.

CORNELIS BEELT, COASTAL LANDSCAPE OF SCHEVENINGEN, oil on panel, 72 x 107 cm

Lot 1171: CORNELIS BEELT, COASTAL LANDSCAPE OF SCHEVENINGEN, oil on panel, 72 x 107 cm

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Characteristic for the works of the Haarlem painter Cornelis Beelt are the generously scaled beach scenes with their varying and abundantly painted staffage. Their colourful costumes provide the contrast to the sand painted in ochre tones. The dark horse carriage is a motif often used by him. It also appears in a painting very similar to ours, formerly in the Gallert' Matthiesen in Berlin (photo RKD). Cornelis Beelt was born much earlier than previously thought. Today the date of his birth is still given as 1640. Evidence for the new date is found in the inventory catalogue of the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem for which Irene van Thiel Stromann contributed the biographies. She believes the date of birth to be 1610/15 after having found documents of Beelt's marriage in Haarlem on 30 March 1630. In 1661 he became a member of the St. Luke´s Guild in Haarlem. His date of death is also uncertain, and is best to determine this by the late oeuvre and therefore should be given as being between 1664 and 1684 (Dr. Gerlinde de Beer).

JAN STEEN, THE MAN AND THE SATYR, oil on canvas (relined), 45 x 53 cm

Lot 1172: JAN STEEN, THE MAN AND THE SATYR, oil on canvas (relined), 45 x 53 cm

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: In a farm interior, a family of peasants are having a meal. A man sits at the table eating his soup, his wife and children stand around the table while an old woman warms herself by the stove. The depiction of the peasant family would be typical, if it were not for the presence of the satyr giving the scene a fabulous twist. The painting depicts Aesop´s fable The Man and the Satyr. It was also depicted by other Dutch and Flemish painters, amongst them Jacob Jordaens who made the story popular. The fable tells of a man and a satyr who become friends. On a cold winter´s day the man puts his hands to his mouth and blows on them. When the Satyr asks why, he tells him, "To warm my hands." Later the man eats some soup and blows on it to cool it down. When the satyr again asks why, the man explains to him: "To cool the soup." The satyr becomes angry, claiming the man is double-tongued, their friendship ends. Jan Steen transforms the antique fable into a Dutch genre scene. It is staged in a peasant interior, still life elements adorn the table with figures like the old woman by the stove, the laughing boy or the baby adding to Steen´s typical repertoire. Hofstede de Groot, who first had doubts about the authenticity of the painting (cf. HdG 78) later revised his opinion in his personal copy of the "catalogue raisonné" and confirmed the attribution.

Description: In this opulent flower picture Jan van Kessel is harking back to a Flemish pictorial ideology with a long tradition. He may have adopted it from an Antwerp artist from the previous generation, for example Daniel Seghers, his teacher, or from Jan Davidsz de Heem, one of the leading still life painters in Flanders. Daniel Seghers in particular had taken the image of the flower garland with a stone cartouche at the centre of the composition and made it his trademark. This innovation of the image, which was extremely important in Flemish art, can be traced back to Jan Brueghel the Elder at the beginning of the 17th century. A composition of Madonna and Child framed by a garland of flowers from this artist was found in the art collection of Cardinal Carlo Borromeo from Milan, who was later made a saint. The connection with Carlo Borromeo is interesting, as the question of the religious importance of art was discussed in his circle just as much as the depiction of reality in works of art. The imagery of the flower garland with a central religious motif has accordingly facilitated religious as well art theoretical reflection of the picture. Thus on the one hand this picture also encourages religious contemplation: from the shepherds receiving news of the birth of Christ one sees the glory of God in the splendour of the flowers, with individual flowers of symbolic importance. On the other hand, the picture offers a meditation on the depiction of realness in painting. The image at the centre and the flower garland encircling it offer two different levels of reality. The dead material of the colourless stone is in contrast to the lively, richly coloured flowers, whilst the insects, crawling on the plants, are a typical pictorial element used to enforce this vitality. Sam Segal counted up to 63 species and varieties of flowers and 16 species of insects, among which were seven different butterfly species. This painting will be included in the forthcoming book on the three artists known as Jan van Kessel as an authentic work by Jan van Kessel the Elder as no. 609.

Unlike Cesare Ripa´s depiction however, Dandini crowns the allegory of Justice with flower garlands which balance the composition through their contrast to the lower half, where the scales, sword, and scroll are displayed. Through stylistic comparison Bellesi dates this painting to the 1650´s. We are grateful to Francesca Baldassari for confirming the authenticity and quality of this work by the Florentine Baroque painter.

Description: Peeter Neeffs the Younger continued the tradition of the church interior in Antwerp as his father and artists like Hendrick van Steenwyck in the previous generation had already painted. His paintings show real and phantastic interiors of churches, the figural staffage were often painted by partly famous Antwerp artists like David Teniers the Younger and Frans Francken the Younger. The present painting shows the gothic cathedral of Antwerp, whose monumentality and vastness Neeffs captures in the painting. Obviously, the Antwerp cathedral was a popular motif that Neeffs often painted (cf. Mauritshuis, The Hague, no. 248).

BERNARD VAILLANT, PORTRAIT OF PIETER VAN LOON HOLDING A MEDAL, oil on canvas (relined), 91.5 x 72 cm

Lot 1192: BERNARD VAILLANT, PORTRAIT OF PIETER VAN LOON HOLDING A MEDAL, oil on canvas (relined), 91.5 x 72 cm

Description: The sitter is the merchant Pieter van Loon (1607-1679) from Amsterdam, as can be shown when comparisons are made with portraits of other members of the family in the museum named after them in Amsterdam. Pieter van Loon and his brother Nicolaes, the latter portrayed by Wallerant Vaillant, were among the founders of the "Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie". Our painting shows Pieter van Loon not as the successful businessman that he was, but as a man at home, a private portrayal. An indication of this is the "Kalotje" on his head, the simple cap worn by gentlemen at home at that time. Also remarkable is the unusual piece of jewellery that the sitter touches gently with his left hand. A wedding band is also visible. Both attributes lead to the conclusion that this portrait shows Pieter as a widower in remembrance of his wife Anna van Foreest who died in 1654.

Description: The Neapolitan, Andrea Vaccaro, was first influenced by the late mannerist style of the early 17th century through his teacher, Domenico Antonio. It was above all however the work of Caravaggio, in Naples, that defined his style. In Vaccaro's later works, the influence of Guido Reni and his circle can also be seen. This depiction of the Virgin and Child is characterised by the monumentality and sublimity of the figural composition.
