A Portrait of Elector Johann Georg von Brandenburg

Lot 1: A Portrait of Elector Johann Georg von Brandenburg

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Johann Georg (1525-1598) became elector of Brandenburg following the death of his father Joachim II in January 1571. He invested a lot of energy into settling the debts his father had amassed through his extravagant courtly lifestyle, earning him the nickname "Oeconomicus".This small format full figure portrait shows the elector with the characteristic signs of office used in portrait painting: A richly embroidered velvet curtain and a broad column. This painting, done in strong colours and gold tones, is by Zacharias Wehm, born the son of a cabinetmaker at the electoral court in Dresden. Wehm apprenticed under Lucas Cranach in Wittenberg before moving back to Dresden in 1581. Although he never occupied the position of court painter, he nevertheless carried out numerous commissions for the court of Saxony, including the decorative paintings in the Renaissance palace at Colditz, hunting still lifes, biblical history paintings, landscapes and diverse portraits.

Still Life with Game

Lot 2: Still Life with Game

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Elector Friedrich Wilhelm (1620-1688), the great-great grandson of Johann Georg (see catalogue number 1), laid the foundations for the rise of Brandenburg-Prussia to one of the central powers of Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries. He was awarded the byname "great elector" (große Kurfürst) in 1675 and followed on the one hand a policy of resolute reforms, but on the other hand was also an avid patron of the arts. His marriage to Louise Henriette of Nassau, the eldest daughter of the Stadtholder Frederick Henry, encouraged a strong interest in Dutch culture at the court of Brandenburg. Therefore it is no surprise that the Dutch artist Hendrick de Fromantiou from Maastricht was named court painter at Brandenburg in 1670.Fromantiou, who married a daughter of Philips Wouwerman two years after his appointment to court painter, mainly painted still lifes and animals, but was also involved with the decorative paintings for the electoral palaces. He also managed the elector's collection of paintings, and travelled to England and Holland at Friedrich Wilhelm's request to purchase works of art. Fromantiou's still lifes are primarily influenced by the work of the painter Willem van Aelst of Delft. The present work represents a rare example of the influence of the early still lifes of Jan Weenix on the artist. Fred Meijer (RKD, The Hague) has confirmed the authenticity of this work from a photograph.

A Berlin faience figure of a Chinese dignitary

Lot 5: A Berlin faience figure of a Chinese dignitary

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: A Chinese dignitary. White glazed faience, painted in blue, green and yellow on blue and iron red. Figure formed from a model in the round with unpainted back (apart from the back of the head). Hollow, glazed interior, unmarked. Nose with an old restoration, localised rubbing to the glaze on the edge of the base. Factory of Gerhard Wolbeer, c. 1700 - 1710.The "great Elector" (Große Kurfürst) Friedrich Wilhelm von Brandenburg was the first Prussian territorial lord to grant concession for his own faience workshop to a "porcelain maker from Delft, a certain Pieter Fransen van der Lee" on 18th May 1678. The city provided ideal conditions both for the manufacture and sales of these products, which explains the Elector's legitimate high hopes of eventually competing with Delft. The workshops of Molin, Wolbeer and Funcke arose in quick succession around 1700, and each of the makers soon adapted the Delft archetypes to create their own unique product portfolios. These pieces were then sold in the booths ("Buden") at Mühlendamm.
