Description: [ Decoy Interest ] Very early decorative common snipe, A.E. Crowell, East Harwich, Massachusetts, early 1st quarter 20th century. Carved with an open bill. Bears the oval brand. Exhibits dropped and carved wings and carved tail. Superb early style painted wooden base. Outstanding dry original paint shows average wear and wonderful patina; roughly 2/3 of the bill has been restored; chips on both wings have been restored; the filler on the knees, legs and just above the foot has been replaced; some replacement of the filler on a couple toes; the legs have been inpainted; some inpainting over the repairs and rubs to the base.
