Description: ATTRIBUTED TO SIR THOMAS LAWRENCE (English, 1769-1830) STUDY OF BENJAMIN WEST oil on canvas; inscribed on verso B. West President of the R.A. by Sir Thom Lawrence; bears number 81e, stenciled on stretcher and stretcher incised with Brown 163 High Holborn; 21 x 16 inches; period frame: 26 x 21 inches Other Notes: One of Sir Thomas Lawrence's most famous portraits is of American artist Benjamin West. This work appears to be a study of the portrait which now hangs in the Yale Centre for British Art in New Haven. Christie's archivists have confirmed that the number inscribed 81e matches a painting that was consigned as a Sir T. Lawrence Portrait of Benj. West on March 31, 1891; however, the painting did not get entered into the auction and was thus returned to the owner. The stretcher also bears incised mark of Thomas Brown, who supplied Lawrence with artists materials between 1807 and 1823.

Olive became a well known patron of the arts and used her family's fortunes to expand the collection. Griffiths and built by Smith & Dimon, New York for the China trading firm of Howland & Aspinwall. She was launched in Manhattan on December 8, 1846.
