Signed, dated and titled on the upper part of the stretcher: Lyonel Feininger May 8. 1948 Afterglow II. Framed. Provenance: Estate of the artist Curt Valentin Gallery, New York (label) Williams Galerie, New York (?; label with paper loss) Marlborough Galleria d'Arte, Rome (label) Marlborough Galerie A.G., Zurich (label) Private collection, Nuremberg Exhibitions: Kestner-Gesellschaft Hanover 1954 (label) Literature: Hess, Hans: Lyonel Feininger, Stuttgart/Berlin/Cologne 1959/1991, cat.rais. 480 with b/w ill. "Some of my works show a new usage of the painting technique, graphical elements from lines in fields of strong colours. I had to come to America to free myself from the strict constraint of straight and rigid lines... it is to me neither new nor unfamiliar to now use free colours and lines, only that, throughout the years, I learned a lot and I succeed where I hesitated before." (Feininger 1942, cited after Hans Hesse, p. 148) In the American homeland Lyonel Feininger took up his previous manner of compositions and consistently developed it further. From 1941 onwards he finds his new, graphic style, where lines, surface and colour still remain his elements of design: Up to this point he used lines to describe the areas carrying the image structure, which he provided with meaning and depth by the means of colour. Now he uses lines as the sole carrier of the image structure, freeing the colour from its formative and spacious task and giving it its own specific importance. By the means of colour he outlines force fields on which he places the freed lines (Hans Hesse, p. 148 f.). Hereby Feininger reaches a new abstraction, where he can emphasize the essentials with concise wording, without detaching himself completely from the reality outside the painting. The here presented painting "Nachglühen II" bears witness to that. The painter impressively shows us the thick atmosphere of dusk by the coast. In the viridescent twilight the solar disk has vanished all together. The last rays appear on the low horizon and are mirrored in the unruffled sea. Light bands of clouds drift past the sky, from which it partially rains. On closer inspection a shadowy sailing boat can be discovered on the horizon. Moreover one can distinguish the tiny silhouettes of walkers on the quay wall (?), who seem to disappear in the vast landscape. Feininger's here presented depiction is not a snapshot of a real natural spectacle but he rather shares a generalising, transcendental version of his memory with us.
