Kennedy, John F Autographed book - a gift to Queen Elizabeth II - signed.

Lot 4: Kennedy, John F Autographed book - a gift to Queen Elizabeth II - signed.

Description: John F. Kennedy (1917-1963) was the President of the United States of America from 1961 until 1963 when he was tragically assassinated in Dallas, Texas. A copy of "Why England Slept" by John F Kennedy, published in 1962 by Sidgwick & Jackson Ltd, London printed in Great Britain by Love & Malcolmson Ltd. The inside page bears the dedication, in blue ink, "To Elizabeth (II) with affection John F Kennedy. (we must not fear to negotiate!)". Handwritten (in pencil) on the front cover of the book are the words 'is still sleeping'. The book inscribed by the President to The Queen was intended as a gift but never received as the JFK visited England to hold cold war talks at Harold Macmillan's country estate on the Sussex Weald on 29 and 30 June 1963. The Queen was in Scotland at the time and sent a handwritten note of regret to JFK. JFK, the first Catholic President, had visited Ireland on 27 June. On 28 June, in Dublin, Kennedy spoke before the Irish parliament, where he openly condemned Britain's history of persecuting Irish Catholics. The inscribed words "we must not fear to negotiate" are a variant of the words contained in JFK's inaugural address: "let us never negotiate out of fear. But let us never fear to negotiate" and may refer to British rule in Northern Ireland.

Manchester United memorabilia: Old Trafford tunnel carpet

Lot 6: Manchester United memorabilia: Old Trafford tunnel carpet

Description: The 'Welcome to Old Trafford' tunnel carpet offered here is a true piece of Manchester United history, having been part of the stadium for several years. It bears the famous 'Red Devils' team badge along with the message '"Welcome to Old Trafford", and was laid at the end of the player's tunnel - where every player would step across it and onto the pitch to the sound of roaring cheers from the Old Trafford faithful. During these years Manchester United claimed its first Championship in 25 years, in the inaugural season of the Premier League, and retained it a year later. The club then claimed a third title in four seasons in 1996, truly marking its return to dominance in English football. This period saw icons such as Ryan Giggs, Peter Schmeichel, Roy Keane, David Beckham, Paul Scholes and the talismanic Eric Cantona - known simply as 'The King' - pull on the red shirt and step onto the pitch. Every one of them crossing the Astro-turf crest on their way. Old Trafford is one of the world's most famous football stadiums. It has been the home of Manchester United for over a century, and has seen the club become one of the most successful and iconic teams in world football. It was club legend Bobby Charlton that christened the stadium as the 'Theatre of Dreams' in 1977. "I'll always have a great affection for this place," he said. "I suppose that I have put a lot of blood and tears into it...as for the man on the street, the guys on the terraces, they're everything... they are a part of a never ending story. They are a Theatre of Dreams!". We believe the crest to be an exceptional and unique piece of Manchester United memorabilia, from a period in the club's history which saw a return to the glory years. Accompanied by a letter of provenance from the consignor, explaining how he acquired the crest whilst working for the Astro-turf company that replaced it in June 1996. The astro-turf measures approximately 115 inches X 74 inches and naturally shows signs of wear. Please note image 4 shows the astro-turf replacement that was fitted at Old Trafford to replace this lot.

Pierrpoint, Albert Collection of hangman memorabilia

Lot 8: Pierrpoint, Albert Collection of hangman memorabilia

Description: This exceptional collection of crime memorabilia includes plaster casts of Pierrepoint's face and both hands. The plaster casts have preserved an incredible level of detail whereby each facet of his countenance, each pore and wrinkle, are immortalised. Henry Pierrepoint's execution book, 6.75" x 4.5", includes personal details of those hanged from 1 November 1901 to 14 July 1910. The prisoner's name, age, height, weight and drop are documented. The sites of the executions, along with remarks, are also recorded. Remarks detailed the physical frame of the prisoners and calibre of their necks, for example: "very heavy body, ordinary neck; wirey, very thin neck; strong neck, little flabby. Albert Pierrepoint's large execution ledger, 6"x9.5", is leather bound and embossed with his name, "A. Pierrepoint". Like his father's execution log, personal details are included, with some additional notes of some prisoners, such as: "the German, Dutch and Belgium spies; French Canadian; Jew; USA Negro; IRA; Cypriot; German POW; British Soldier;" etc From 29 December 1932 to 27 July 1955, hundreds of names are recorded. Among them, some notable names are listed, including Lord Haw-Haw, Ruth Ellis, Mahmood Hussein Mattan, Elizabeth Volkenrath and F. E. Hensmann. Also included is a delicate amber and ivory cigar holder which is in very good condition and measures 3.2" in length. It comes with its original leather, silver velvet-lined, case, 3.5" long, which has some age marks to its exterior clasp. The item belonged to Henry A. Pierrepoint, Albert's father and British hangman. A fine silver watch chain worn by Albert, his father and his uncle (also a hangman), at hundreds of executions between 1900 and 1956 is also included in this superb collection. It measures 17" in length, including the silver bar. Documents and photographs relating to Pierrepoint's term as executioner include: the "Memorandum of Conditions to which any Person acting as Executioner is required to conform"; a letter from the War Office; and photographs of the Pierrepoint men, Robert Fabian (Fabian of the Yard), John Ellis, and JRH Robertson. The letter of thanks from the War Office refers to the case of Golby, Hensmann and Smith, three men who, in 1950, were charged with murdering an Egyptian night-watchman. Only Hensmann pulled the trigger, but all three were sentenced to death. The letter, 8"x6.5", written by Lieut-Colonel JRH. Robertson, R.E. Assistant Adjutant General, reads: "Dear Mr. Pierrepoint, I wish to convey my sincere thanks for your willing co-operation in the case of Hensmann, Smith and Golby. I hope you were well looked after in HELF and led (apart from business) an enjoyable trip." No witnesses appeared in their two-day trial. No appeals were allowed and a plea to King George for clemency was ignored. This treatment greatly affected the troops serving in the Suez and they rioted. The executions took place in a secluded area in the desert, away from the hyped media attention. A note on the last recorded hangings betrays the awareness that the last ever execution would be of great significance. Rather than have one man stand as the last executioner, two hangings took place at the same time and date, so that the legacy would be split in two, perhaps to divide its potency. The Pierrepoint Collection was last seen at Christies in 1992 where these items sold for £30,000. Albert Pierrepoint (1905-1992) The longest serving and most famous hangman of Britain, Albert Pierrepoint, was preceded in his time as executioner by his uncle and his father. After pursuing the Home Office for some time, the elder Pierrepoint, Henry, was eventually granted the opportunity to follow his unusual ambition to be an executioner. After establishing himself as a dedicated and proficient employee, Henry encouraged his brother Thomas to train as an executioner. This career path suited Thomas well and he continued working until his seventies. At the tender age of eleven, the young Albert Pierrepoint professed his desire to follow in his father's footsteps, writing at school: "When I grow up...I should like to be the official executioner". Ten years after Henry's death, Albert trained under his uncle Thomas, assisting him with hangings throughout the 1930s. In total, the three men were involved in some 800 hangings. They were respected for their serious application to the post, administering the death penalty in a humane and dignified manner. As Britain's Chief Executioner, Albert Pierrepoint was cautious to lead a discreet life, as laid out in the "Memorandum of Conditions to which any Person acting as Executioner is required to conform": "He should avoid attracting public attention in going to or from the prison; he should clearly understand that his conduct and general behaviour must be respectable and discreet, not only at the place and time of execution, but before and subsequently; in particular he must not give to any person particulars on the subject of his duty for publication". During his career, Pierrepoint followed this rule exactly. Although his wife had known of his part-time career for many years, the couple never discussed it until his return from performing executions in Gibraltar in 1944. He greatly admired her discretion stating: "I knew that she must have been aware for a very long time of what I did in the intervals when I told her 'I shan't be seeing you for a couple of days.'" Pierrepoint conducted the last execution in the Republic of Ireland and that of the last woman to be hanged in Britain, Ruth Ellis. At only 28, the beautiful model provoked a media frenzy and 500,000 members of the public signed a petition for clemency. There has always been some doubt as to the exact numbers of those executed by Pierrepoint, especially considering his reluctance to speak on the topic. His execution ledger provides the definitive answer to this question. Pierrepoint notes that he was engaged in approximately 606 executions, including some 200 convicted Nazi war criminals after World War II. Of all the names listed, approximately 173 were reprieved. Many concentration camp guards and staff were put to death at the hands on Pierrepoint, including the 'Beast of Belsen', Josef Kramer, convicted after the Belsen Trial in 1945. At Hamelin Prison, the guilty met their fate: women were hanged individually, while the men were executed in pairs, all on the same day. Elisabeth Volkenrath, the youngest guard convicted for crimes at Bergen-Belsen and Auschwitz, was one of the three women executed. Likewise, notorious traitors John Amery and 'Lord Haw-Haw', William Joyce, met their end under Pierrepoint's gaze. Joyce was a fascist politician, Nazi propaganda broadcaster and writer who distributed propaganda leaflets to British prisoners of war. The term 'Lord Haw-Haw' was the nickname for pro-fascist English-speaking broadcasters from 1939, but by 1945 it came to denote Joyce exclusively. In adulthood, Amery began to chase pro-fascist ideals and formed a British Branch of the SS, gaining short-term support from the Germans. Only after his execution was it revealed that his father, Sir Leopold Amery, was Jewish and had helped create the Balfour Treaty that authorised the founding of the Jewish State in Palestine. The innocent too, like Derek Bentley, Mahmood Mattan and Timothy John Evans, were executed by Pierrepoint (all three were posthumously pardoned). Pierrepoint never questioned his instructions while employed, but he believed that the punishment did not deter others from serious crime. In his autobiography he wrote: The fruit of my experience has this bitter after-taste: that I do not now believe that any of the hundreds of executions I carried out has in any way acted as a deterrent against future murder. Capital punishment, in my view, achieved nothing except revenge. There is some contention as to the exact reasons for Pierrepoint's resignation in 1956. The most likely impetus behind this decision is that when he travelled to Manchester to perform an execution, a reprieve was granted, and he was not paid in full, even though he had incurred expenses. Pierrepoint died in July of 1992, aged 87. His legacy has influenced modern culture, most notably a 2005 film release based on his life and centred on the execution of Ruth Ellis.

Taylor, Elizabeth Handwritten love letter to Richard Burton

Lot 9: Taylor, Elizabeth Handwritten love letter to Richard Burton

Description: Elizabeth Taylor (1932-2011). A love letter written, in pencil, by Elizabeth Taylor to her husband Richard Burton on their 10 year wedding anniversary, March 15th 1974, just days before their breakup. Taylor and Burton were renting a house in Oroville, California while Burton was filming his latest movie "The Klansman". Their lease on the home began on February 15th 1974 (see Lot 151). The letter reads in full: "My darling (my still) My husband. I wish I could tell you of my love for you, of my fear, my delight, my pure animal pleasure of you - (with you) - my jealousy, my pride, my anger at you, at times. Most of all my love for you, and whatever love you can dole out to me - I wish I could write about it but I can't. I can only "boil and bubble" inside and hope you understand how I really feel. Anyway I lust thee, Your (still) Wife. P.S. O'Love, let us never take eachother for granted again! P.P.S. How about that - 10 years!!" Taylor had warned Burton from the start of their marriage in 1964 that she had zero tolerance for infidelity. However during the filming of When Eagles Dare, Burton resumed an affair with co-star Mary Ure. After that, Taylor made sure she was with on set with Burton every day in 1969 for the shooting of Anne Of The Thousand Days. A further affair with co-star Genevieve Bujold lasted many years. An affair with Nathalie Delon followed in 1972, along with rumours of an affair with Raquel Welch. Taylor finally lost patience during the filming of The Klansman when Burton commenced an affair with "a teenager, a hotel waitress and a string of other women." The love letter is accompanied by a letter of provenance from Toni Hennings, the woman who rented the Oroville house to them: "This letter written by Elizabeth Taylor while renting my home from Feb 15th til April 18th 1974. It was left behind - inside a book in a drawer under the masterbedroom bed." To our knowledge no other Taylor-Burton love letter has ever been offered for sale. Also see Lots 10 and 36.

Lot 10: Taylor, Elizabeth Handwritten letter to her cat

Description: Elizabeth Taylor (1932-2011). A letter from Elizabeth Taylor to her missing cat "Cassius". The letter was written between February 15th 1974 and April 18th 1974 when Taylor and Richard Burton were renting a home in Oroville, California, whilst Burton filmed "The Klansman". It was at this time that Taylor finally lost patience with Burton's infidelity and walked out on their first marriage (See Lot 9) The letter reads in full: "To my lovely lost Cat. I see you, my beauty boy, in the refelection of those shining black-brown rocks ahead of me. I see the green o'thy eyes in every raised, sweated leaf shaking in my eyes. I remember the sweet smell of your fur against my neck when I was deeply in trouble and how, some how you made it better and you knew! You knew always when I hurt and you made comfort for me, as I did once for you when you were a broken kitten. Anyway, I love you Cassius - and thank you for your beauty. Please come back!" Great Britain Tyrian Plum postage stamp

Lot 11: Great Britain Tyrian Plum postage stamp

Description: The 2d Tyrian Plum is one of the most celebrated postage stamps of Great Britain. Issued in May 1910, the stamp arose because of a desire to economise on the costs of stamp production. As a result, all stamps were issued in one colour to reduce ink costs. A new 2d stamp, printed in the Tyrian Plum shade and bearing the portrait of King Edward VII, had been agreed and was in the process of being printed. One hundred thousand sheets, totaling 24,000,000 stamps, were delivered to the post office stores for distribution to Postmasters. However, following the death of Edward VII on 6 May 1910, it was decided not to go ahead with the new stamp and almost all the stock was destroyed. Only 12 examples are known to exist, three of which are held in The Royal Philatelic Collection of Queen Elizabeth II. The example offered here is accompanied by a 1961 British Philatelic Association Certificate of Authenticity stating that the stamp is genuine. The stamp has a light gum bend on the reverse, and a couple of shortish perfs not mentioned on the certificate. Otherwise a fine example. SG266a catalogue £110,000.

Lot 16: Apollo 12: Autographed photographs x3, signed

Description: The Apollo 12 mission, 1969, was a resounding success for NASA, seeing two of its crew set foot on the lunar surface, the second time man had walked on the moon. A number of important scientific experiments were undertaken as part of the mission and samples were collected to bring back for further research. Set of three photographs, signed by crew members Conrad, Bean and Gordon. The full colour photographs measure 8" x 10", with prominent bold autographs of the astronauts. Small ding to bottom edge of Gordon's photo, otherwise in excellent condition. Charles Conrad Jr. (1930-1999), better known as 'Pete', was the third man to walk on the moon and self-described first man to dance on the moon. During his career as an astronaut, he flew on a number of NASA missions, including the Apollo 12, Gemini 5 and Skylab 2 space flights. Conrad passed away, somewhat poetically, in Ojai, California. Ojai is the Native American word for moon. The Choco Indians of Panama made him an honorary member of their group, believing that, when he died, given the correct rites, his spirit would go to the moon. Texas-born Alan Bean (1932-) was the fourth man to walk on the lunar surface, taking a piece of his clan's tartan with him. Since retiring he has become an active artist, painting scenes inspired by his time in space. Dick Gordon (1929-) orbited the moon on the Apollo 12 mission. He was also a key member of the Gemini 11 mission. Gordon was inducted into the Astronaut Hall of Fame on March 19, 1993.

Armstrong, Neil: Cut hair, scissors and comb

Lot 18: Armstrong, Neil: Cut hair, scissors and comb

Description: Neil Armstrong (1930-2012) was best known for being the first person to set foot on the moon. He participated in two spaceflights during his career as an astronaut; Gemini 8 and Apollo 11. He also served as Capsule Communicator, communicating with the crew of Gemini 11 in 1966. Armstrong was awarded a Congressional Space Medal of Honor for his efforts and has been decorated by 17 countries in total. In May 2005, Neil Armstrong became involved in a legal battle with barber Marx Sizemore of Lebanon, Ohio, after finding that the barber was selling off cuts of his hair to memorabilia hunters. These are the scissors and comb used by Neil Amstrong's barber, Marx Sizemore, to cut the Moonwalker's hair. The items are accompanied by approximately 25 strands of Neil Armstrong's hair. Armstrong threatened legal action unless the hair was returned or the sale proceeds donated to charity. Also included are sworn testimonies from Sizemore declaring the hair to be genuine: "This is to inform you that I have been the barber of record of Neil Armstrong since October 1999. I generally cut his hair once a month. This is the, Neil Armstrong, who was an astronaut for N.A.S.A. and the first man to walk on the moon. I do attest that the hair clippings submitted to you are his hairs that I cut from his head." There is another Sizemore document authenticating the scissors used to cut Armstrong's hair. A notarised Public State of Colorado document is also included, detailing how the original purchaser obtained the hair from Marx Sizemore.

Bonaparte, Napoleon: Autographed war related letter, signed

Lot 23: Bonaparte, Napoleon: Autographed war related letter, signed

Description: Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) was a military leader and later Emperor of the French. Rising to prominence following the French Revolution, he was one of the most charismatic and prominent figures in French history. In this letter Napoleon asks the Duc how much gunpowder he has sent to various places, including the French Garrisons of Stettin, Cüstrin and Magdeburg 'for the purpose of completing supplies for these places'. Napoleon signs off with a typically bold signature. The three cities are within Prussia. Prussia had been subdued by French forces in 1806, however, at the time of writing (1813), the Prussian king Frederick William III had been heartened by Napoleon's famous retreat from Russia during the 1812-13 winter. Frederick William III left French-controlled Berlin for Breslau, with plans to use it to re-launch Prussian war against the Napoleon. He then signed an alliance with Russia at nearby Kalisz on 28th February, 1813, and made some of his most famous speeches to the citizens in Breslau shortly after: 'To my people; To my army'. Breslau is to the south of Stettin and Cüstrin, with all three lying on or near the River Oder, with Magdeburg to the west of Cüstrin. Napoleon's letter reflects his concerns that Prussian forces are about to rise up against the French garrisons. The Duc de Feltre was Henri-Jacques-Guillauem Clarke, a French politician of Irish decent. He had originally entered the French army in 1782, and with the outbreak of the French Revolution, served in the early Revolutionary Wars where he was promoted to General de Brigade. The Duc's loyalty to Napoleon led him to be Minister of War when Napoleon reclaimed the throne in 1815. Correspondence of this kind is exceptionally rare and, accompanied by such a fine signature, this is a very desirable historical item.

Churchill, Winston: Autographed endorsement letter, signed

Lot 34: Churchill, Winston: Autographed endorsement letter, signed

Description: Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965) was the British Prime Minister between 1940 and 1945. Perhaps the most famous of all British politicians, he is regarded as one of the greatest wartime leaders of the 20th century, having led Britain to victory against Nazi Germany in the second world war. This one page typed note, which measures 7½" x 9½", is dated May 17, 1919 - five months after Churchill was appointed Secretary of State for War. "I am in full agreement with the memorandum of the Chancellor of the Exchequer on the subject of the employment of persons in the Government service not of British or allied parentage. I cannot conceive how we can now turn out into the streets (at this point Churchill has added handwritten notation in red ink "on ground of parentage") men whom we trusted in positions of responsibility during the whole of the war." The letter has been signed "WSC 5/7/19" in red ink by Churchill. It features a small tear on the right hand side and a hole punch to the top left corner but is otherwise in fine condition. Churchill was shocked by the treatment of returning colonial troops who had fought as members of the empire during World War I, who, upon their return, were treated as second class citizens. This is reflected in Churchill's observation, "I cannot conceive how we can now turn out into the streets on ground of parentage men whom we trusted in positions of responsibility during the whole of the war." As World War One came to an end, the United Kingdom struggled with issues relating to immigration and employment, resulting in the Alien Act of 1919, which was passed in December of that year. The act required foreign nationals to register with police. It also enabled their deportation and restricted where they could live. The act spurred racism and resulting disturbances led to greater restrictions on aliens during the 1920s.

Clemens, Samuel L (Mark Twain): Autograph on pamphlet, signed

Lot 38: Clemens, Samuel L (Mark Twain): Autograph on pamphlet, signed

Description: Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835-1910), more famously known by his pen name Mark Twain, was a prolific and well respected American author. Noted and admired for his keen wit and satirical skills, he has been described as the "greatest American humorist of his age", with William Faulkner describing him as "the father of American literature". The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884) are his most famous published works, which have become known as the very definition of the "Great American Novel". This celebratory pamphlet and menu is signed on the cover by Twain in fine brown/black ink. His inscription reads: "To Mrs. Hugh Gordon Miller, With The affectionate & grateful remembrances of Mark Twain. James Town Exposition, September 24/07. (The day after the struggle)." As indicated in Twain's inscription, the piece was signed during the famous Jamestown Exposition of 1907, which was one of many world's fairs and exposition held in the US during the early part of the 20th century. Measuring 10" x 8", the pamphlet celebrates "The First Hudson River Steamboat, Robert Fulton's "Clermont", 1807-1907". Inside, printed text highlights the historic importance of the vessel and its context. A red, white and blue ribbon ties the pages and cover together. The Clermont was the first Steamboat to make a voyage of any significant distance, journeying between New York and Albany in 1807. September 23, 1907 was dedicated to the celebration of the centennial of the steamboat and named Fulton Day at the exposition. Mark Twain was in attendance as a founding member of the Robert Fulton Monument Association and sailed to the exposition aboard the yacht Kanawha, much to the appreciation of the gathered crowds. Passengers on board a steamboat were in such a panic to catch a glimpse of the writer, who had already achieved considerable fame at this stage, that they gathered on the starboard side of the vessel and caused it to careen toward's Twain's yacht. "The struggle", noted in Twain's inscription, refers to the disasterous weather that struck on Fulton Day, which almost brought the three-mile long marine parade festivities to a standstill. The item is in excellent condition, with some light toning.

Doherty, Pete: Original blood painting + photo

Lot 48: Doherty, Pete: Original blood painting + photo

Description: Pete Doherty (1979-) is a notorious celebrity, famed for his high-profile relationship with Kate Moss and his addiction to crack cocaine and heroin. While a noted creative talent, regular court appearances and jail sentences have come to overshadow his musical and artistic pursuits. Doherty was one of the founders of the acclaimed The Libertines, and also founded Babyshambles. He published his journals, photography and poetry in 2007's The Books of Albion: The Collected Writings of Peter Doherty. Since 2007, Doherty's paintings have been made available to the public. Like his personal life, these paintings have caused controversy due to his use of human blood, mostly Doherty's own. This self-portrait shows Doherty smoking, wearing his trademark hat. The artist clearly understands his own iconography and deftly records his most identifiable image. A flurry of smudged pencil, pen and blood create a broken, textured effect. The mixed media piece features a number of novel techniques; splattered blood and dripping blood. A concentration of blood curves outwards from the eye, downwards in dripping, criss-crossing lines. Above the head, drawn across the hat, Doherty has included a syringe in blue pen. The highest level of detail is afforded to this depiction, inferring the item's importance. The level of detail also suggests that the item was drawn from observation, rather than memory. A blue rectangle, with the number 20, depicts a £20 bank note. Provenance A fan approached the singer at a gig in Wigan, 2010, and cheekily asked how he could make some money. Doherty said he would create a blood painting and send him £20; the money never arrived but the painting was sent a week later (with a drawn £20 note). The canvas measures 32" x 32". The text "For Alistair, love Peter" features prominently over half the canvas. This personal note becomes part of the artwork as it is inscribed in blood. Included in the sale price is a colour photograph of Pete Doherty measuring 11¾" x 8¼" signed by the man himself.
