Oil Painting

Lot 1: Oil Painting "Saint Sebastian and Saint Irene", early 17th C.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on canvasNorthern Europe, early 17th CenturyUnusual form with a small round pedimentFramedOverall dimensions: 142 x 85 cm Very good conditionThis large-sized oil painting shows a scene of the lives of Saint Sebastian and Saint Irene. According to the legend, Saint Irene found Saint Sebastian pierced by arrows and tied to a tree and nursed him back to health. (He was later beat to death with maces and his body was thrown into the Roman Cloaca Maxima). Sebastian is slumped down at the feet of the tree, pierced by the arrows and already half dead. His head is surrounded by a pale halo and his head is turned towards the sky with an already slightly transfigured look. His left arm is hit by an arrow and lifted up high by a small angel. Two other angels next to his head crown him with a garland and the martyr's palm. Saint Irene, dressed in an elegant garment, sits next to Sebastian and tries to pull an arrow out of his breast. A servant girl is standing next to her, holding a plate with the already pulled out arrows. The background opens up into a wide, slightly sloping countryside with a nightly, grey-blue sky above it. The figure of the saint is very elaborately done, his suffering body, modeled by the intense use of chiaroscuro, resembles in its presentation those of the presentations of the dead body of Christ. Irene and especially the creases of her dress are also very carefully painted whereas the angels in the upper part have been painted less detailed. It may be assumed that the painting was meant to be hung high upon a church's wall and is thus designed in below angle view. The painting is in good condition, with craquelé due to its age. The delicate golden wood frame shows visible traces of age and use. The painting is not signed. The overall dimensions measure 142 x 85 cm, the dimensions of the canvas are 140 x 84 cm.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on artist's boardAustria, 1st half of the 19th CenturyFramedVery elegant conductionOverall dimension: 58.5 x 48 cmGood conditionThis fine portrait corresponds in completion and style to the ideals of the Biedermeier time. After the example of the realistic, Dutch paintings of the 17υth century, one tried to create direct and almost photographic portraits. The portrait at hand shows the young man with serious and sensitive features. He is dressed in the severe dress of his time which he knows lets him appear a reliable and elegant young man. Unfortunately, the young man shown here is unknown though he can be identified as Michael Ehrentraud from Vienna thanks to an inscription on the back of the painting. The painting is in good condition, with a few a material losses at the upper margin. It has been restored where his hair is and on his right cheek. The frame shows traces of use. The overall dimensions of the frame measure 58.5 x 48 cm, the dimensions of the image cut-out measure 49,3 x 39 cm. On the back of the frame is a label with an inscription reading „Michael Ehrentraud geb. 6. Oktober 1813. Bürger von Wien."

Lot 6: Oil Painting "Coast of Naples" by Teodoro Duclère, 19th Century

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on woodItaly, 19th CenturyTeodoro Duclère (1816-1869) - French-Italian landscape painterPaintings by Teodoro Duclere fetch up to 30,000 Euros at international auctionsFramed in golden stucco frameMetal plaque inscribed "Teodoro Duclère, Napoli"Dimensions, framed: 28.8 x 36.4 cmGood conditionThis fine and detailed painting shows the Italian coast, with a few softly rising mountains in the background. Three slender fishing boats, each manned by at least three rowers, are preparing to leave the coast. Some more boats are lying on the beach, some of them covered with white cloths that seem to serve as shelter. A few houses line the beach, among them a round defensive tower and a narrow baroque gate. The hills in the background, of which some are vegetated with palm trees, rise not much higher than the buildings in front of them. The sky above takes up nearly one half of the painting, which is just enough space for the dramatic play of the clouds. The wind blows the thick white and grey clouds over the scenery and their movement contrasting with the rather quiet sea below. The clouds bank up behind the tower, thus further highlighting it. The whole painting is pervaded with the warm southern light, giving it a soft, golden glow. The painting, aside from age-related soiling, is in good condition with tiny paint flakes and abrasions at the edges, resulting from framing. The frame shows minor traces of age and wear as well as few small chips. The overall dimensions, framed, measure 28.8 x 36.4 cm; the dimensions of the wooden panel measure 18.5 x 26 cm.Teodoro Duclère (1816-1869)Duclère was born in Naples to French parents. He visited the school of Posilippo that was one of the most progressive schools for landscape painting back then. The pupils were taught to paint outside and a group of the most important Italian landscape painters emerged from the school. One of the leading artists was the Dutch Antonio Pitloo (1790-1837) who not only taught Duclère but also became his father-in-law. Duclère himself soon became known for his detailed oil paintings and watercolours that show his proximity to Verism. He became so famous that even the Russian Tsar ordered a few paintings by him. He died at only 51 years of age. Artworks by Duclère can now be viewed at the museum in Sorrento, among other places.

Oil Painting

Lot 8: Oil Painting "Nude", after Anselm Feuerbach, 1870-1890

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on paper attached to cardboardGermany, around 1870-1890Lower left side monogrammed "AF"From the circle of Anselm FeuerbachOverall dimensions: 42 x 50 cmThis fine painting depicts a lying female nude. The young woman lies elevated on a kind of bed of which the headboard can be seen in the background. The rest is covered by the white and green blankets and pillows the woman is lying on. Her legs are slightly spread and she presents her body to the viewer almost frontally. Her left arm is bent and supporting her head, her right arm rests at her hip. The background is painted in a gentle, chatoyant brown shade that enhances the milky-white skin of the woman. The white blanket underneath her further highlights her against the brown tones around her. Emotively, the artist has gently outlined the woman's body and brought it to life with soft shading. Entirely in keeping with Feuerbach, whom the artist aspires to in this painting, the depiction of the woman is very romantic, one is tempted to say blurred. The small painting is in good condition with minor signs of age (craquelure, missing corner pieces and a small tear in the lower border). It is painted on paper that has been attached to cardboard. It features a ligated monogram, "AF", on the lower left side. The overall dimensions are 42 x 50 cm, the dimensions of the paper are 29 x 36 cm.

Oil Painting „Tsar Alexander II

Lot 13: Oil Painting „Tsar Alexander II" by Schalepansky, Dresden, 1887

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on canvasDresden, Germany, 1887Signed and dated in the lower right „[...] v. Schalepansky, Dresden, 26.9.87"Inscribed illegibly lower left „Czar Alexander II Er [...]"Fine manner of painting Elaborately framedOverall dimensions, framed: 81 x 71 cmThis fine portrait of the Tsar Alexander II Nikolaevich (Moscow 1818 - St. Petersbug 1881), son of Tsar Nicholas I. and Alexandra Feodorovna, is portrayed in uniform in front of a romantically clouded and torn sky. The portrait has been painted on an oval canvas and the tsar is turned sidewise towards the beholder so as to show his breast, hung with medals. He wears a fur cap with a comb in it and the dark cap lets the youthful face with the attentive eyes and the impressive moustache underneath shine brightly. The dress regimentals with the golden epaulettes, the shining buttons and the medals seems nearly too impressive for the young man. Matching the seriousness of his impression and the portrait's formality is the clouded sky in the back. Its colours change between blue, grey and pink tones and depending on the incidence of light the sky either appears to be of a peaceful evening light or a darker, pre-thundery atmosphere. The painting has been restored and cleaned. The overall dimensions measure 81 x 71 cm, the dimensions of the canvas measure 75 x 46 cm. The painting is illegibly inscribed in the lower left „Czar Alexander II Er [...]". It is signed and dated in the lower right „[...] v. Schalepansky, Dresden, 26.9.87". The beautiful stucco frame has an oval inlay and shows a few traces of age and use as well as minor repairs.

Oil Painting „Luther on the Wartburg

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on canvasCarl Gehrts (1853-1898) - German genre painter and illustratorPaintings by Carl Gehrts fetch up to 6000 Euro in International auctions FramesWith plaque „Prof. Carl Gehrts, Luther auf der Wartburg"Doubled canvas Overall dimensions: 90 x 120 cmGood condition This large painting by German artist Carl Gehrs shows a huge room that is lightened by a window with crown glass windows on the left side. A German medieval trestle table stands at the back wall, covered with writing things and an earthen ware jar. Portraits are hanging above the table and in front of it stands in a dynamic pose, Martin Luther. He seems to have just stood up to greet the servant that is bringing him food on a board. Matching the scene is a banner hanging on the wall with the inscription „Essen und Trinken hält Leib und Seele zusammen" (Food and drink keep body and soul together). Luther had been banned on the Wartburg in 1521 in order let him keep a low profile. He stayed anonymously on the castle, more a prisoner than a guest. Out of boredom he began translating the bible from Greek into German. The artist has portrayed Luther amidst his work - papers and books are surrounding him and it seems, as if he rose unwillingly to take his food. The painting is in very good condition. It has been doubled onto another canvas and the transitions between the first canvas and the one behind can be seen. The overall dimensions measure 90 x 120 cm, the dimensions of the canvas measure 71 x 100.5 cm.Carl Gehrts (1853-1898)Gehrts studied at the academy in Weimar but was active in Düsseldorf from 1876 onwards. The poem by Mörike, the German poet of the Biedermeier period, illustrates this sorrow only too well and this beautiful pencil drawing is a fitting counterpart. The maiden stands by the stove and cries over unfaithful cad. Only the little cat snuggles up to her to give solace. The paper is clearly visibly browned. Oil Painting „Travail domestique en plein air

Lot 17: Oil Painting „Travail domestique en plein air", late 19th C.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Impressionistic oil painting on woodFrance, 2nd half of the 19th CenturyInscribed by a third party in the lower right „Manet"FramedOverall dimensions: 30 x 39 cmVery good conditionThe painting at hand is a very fine and beautiful impressionist painting with the rare subject of domestic scene taking place under the open sky. Two elegantly dressed ladies sit on a hillside on the edge of a forest, each of them absorbed in their respective task. One of them leans against a tree facing the beholder while busying herself with her needlework. Her parasol lies next to her in the grass. The other girl dressed in a slightly simpler manner sits a bit further down the hillside next to her and is completely absorbed in her book. The beholder's view is directed between the singular trees upon the free meadow behind the trees and further on where another forest begins. The small painting is an exceptionally beautiful impressionist work that resembles paintings by Manet. However it cannot be definitely ascribed to him. The ladies on the painting remind one of Manet's most famous subject Berthe Morisot and it is quite possible the two ladies in the painting indeed show Berthe and her daughter. The painting is of an extremely high quality: its colours harmonize and complement each other and the ingenious composition guides the view around the women and always back to them. The green meadow underneath the women contrasts with the rather fidgety background above the hilltop. Tree trunks cross this background as it blends into the treetops and finally in a small corner of sky. The artist placed a domestic and intimate activity under the sky thereby making nature a safe space. The painting is in very good condition and shows only minimal loss of colour at its borders underneath the frame. The slender frame shows only a few traces of use and is in very good condition as well. The painting is inscribed, "Manet", by a third party and is also inscribed on its back, "Etude par Manet [...?]". The overall dimensions are 30 x 39 cm and the wooden panel measures 24 x 33 cm.

Oil Painting „Sheep Flock on Poplar Alley

Lot 20: Oil Painting „Sheep Flock on Poplar Alley" by Helmuth Liesegang

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on canvasGermany, around 1900Helmuth Liesegang (1858-1945) - German landscape painter of the Düsseldorf schoolSigned lower rightBeautiful golden framePaintings by Liesegang fetch up to 5.000,- EUR in international auctionsOverall dimensions: 70,5 x 60,5 cmA flock of sheep follows its shepherd on a poplar alley on their way to a homestead in the hazy evening light. They are on the way back and somehow the whole painting exudes the complacent and saturated fatigue of the sheep. The hazy light, the luscious brown and green of the soil and the nearly bald poplars create a late autumnal atmosphere. The muddy under fur of the sheep that only show the distinctive white on their backs emphasizes this impression. The unsettled sky is painted in such an impasto way that one can nearly sense the humidity of the heavy clouds. The same applies to the dark soil and even the roofs of the buildings seem to shimmer with moisture. Thanks to their immanent glance, the used oil colours are the perfect choice for depicting this autumnal landscape. The visible paint brushes and the thickly applied layers of paint enhance this atmosphere. The canvas has visible flaking in the lower half. The frame is in very good condition. The dimensions including the frame are 70.5 x 60.5 cm and the dimensions of the canvas are 50 x 40 cm. The painting is signed in the lower left "H. Liesegang".Helmuth Liesegang (1858-1945)Lisegang grew up in Kleve, a small city in the Lower Rhine area, from where he very soon started to visit the Academy in Düsseldorf. When he finished his studies, he started travelling and went to Belgium, the Netherlands and Paris where he got to know many important painters such as Max Liebermann. He returned to his home area and the nature of the Lower Rhine region became his most important subject. He fled the bombardments during the war and went to Leipzig where he died in 1945, named a professor beforehand. He has been awarded many prices and honours during his lifetime and is nowadays known as one of the most important representative of the Düsseldorfer Malerschule.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on canvasErwin Kettemann (1897-1971) - German landscape painterSigned lower right „E. Kettemann Mchn."Framed in an elaborate golden frameOverall dimensions: 80 x 100 cmVery good conditionThe beautiful painting shows a wintery alpine landscape in the evening light. The valley lies already in the shadow of the mountains whose ragged tops are immersed in the soft evening light. The snow in the valley is thick but not too high and the small river is not completely frozen. The valley lies quietly and peacefully. The valley in the painting is the Vals Valley in Tyrol in the Zillertaler Alps. The mountains Fußstein and Olperer can be seen in the background. Kettemann is technically perfect but his strength is in the rendition of the landscape's atmosphere. To achieve this, he places light and shadow that invite the beholder to take a closer look and his visible brush strokes lend some depth to the snowy surfaces. The game of the light on the mountain creek reflects the light on the mountain tops and adds a lively note to the otherwise quiet painting. The painting is in very good condition and so is the frame. The overall dimensions measure 80 x 100 cm, the dimensions of the canvas measure 60 x 80 cm. The painting is signed in the lower right with an addition for Munich „E. Kettemann Mchn.". Description: Watercolour on paperCarl Rüdell (1855-1939) - German painter and architectSigned lower left „CRüdell"Atmospheric and fine watercolourWatercolours by Carl Rüdell fetch up to 35.700,- EUR in international auctionsOverall dimensions : 13.5 x 21 cmVery good conditionThis fine watercolour by Carl Rüdell shows his love to his Rhenisch home town and its beautiful surroundings. The foreground shows a wide, sandy riverbank with a few trees standing in the back. A man is depicted while trying to push his boat into the Rhine. Cologne's unmistakable silhouette can be recognized in the back of the painting - the large Cologne Cathedral towers majestically above the smaller surrounding buildings and only now and then does a smaller church tower dare to grow a bit higher. Rüdell gives prove of the high level possible, in watercolour paintings as well as in the depiction of simple cityscapes. Without really focusing on one detail, everything seems to be painted and studied in detail. The fine grey-blue colours of the city distinguish themselves nuanced from the colours of the sky and the Rhine and harmonize with the deep greens and browns of the foreground. This small watercolour is an exceptional piece of work, both in colours and composition and a very fine Rüdell. The watercolour is in very good condition. It measures 13.5 x 21 cm and is signed in the lower left „CRüdell". Carl Rüdell (1855-1939)Carl Rüdell was born in Trier and moved to Cologne to study architecture where he studied under Reinhold Wirtz and Johann Therodorus Stracke. He became "Landesbauführer" (Head of Building in the Region) in 1872. He worked together with the befriended architect Richard Odenthal, and together they built and rebuilt several churches in the Rhine area. Description: Watercolour on paperCarl Rüdell (1855-1939) - German painter and architectSigned lower right „Rüdell"Colour intense and atmospheric watercolourWatercolours by Carl Rüdell fetch up to 35.700,- EUR in international auctionsOverall dimensions : 51 x 41 cmVery good conditionThis beautiful watercolour is a rare piece in the oeuvre of Carl Rüdell, who is mainly known for his authentic and amusing city portraits of Cologne. Behind a small green embankment lies a rowboat on a river. The embankment on the other side is overgrown with bushes and trees and only a small piece of the sky is visible in the upper right corner of the painting. The actual central character is the embankment on the other side; Rüdell has used the complete range of autumnal colours, red, orange, yellow, green and blue alternate and blend into each other. The colours are mirrored in the river's surface but again in softer tones. The artist has deliberately chosen the quiet subject to fully play off the lively colourfulness without creating a hectic atmosphere. Rüdell has reached a very high level of painting with watercolours and this one shows his skills to the best: the colours oscillate between intensity and paleness, they mackle and contrast with each other, clear lines change with soft transitions. The watercolour is in very good condition. It is mounted in a passe-partout whose slant is set in gold. The passe-partout measures 51 x 41 cm, the image cut-out measures 36 x 27.5 cm. We look upon the traditional Cologne fish market in front of the "Stapelhaus" and the steeple of Great St Martin. Of course, Cologne Cathedral cannot be left out of this Rhineland impression the - its massive towers project into the cloudy sky in the background. Two covered wagons, an organ grinder and a cart covered with goods are visible in the fish market. A woman in a long white apron is looking at the food, while a man, ready to carry the shopping, is standing to the far side. A small girl impatiently watches the scene from a distance. The white of the apron and the colour of the white horse pulling the wagon are reflected in the picturesque façades of the buildings. The impressionistic execution in combination with the sensitive drawing and Rüdell's extraordinary intuition for atmosphere send the viewer to Cologne during the turn of the century. The watercolour is in very good condition with only minor traces of age. Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on canvasAustria, around 1920Franz Schaden (1888-1938) - Austrian painterSigned lower right "Schaden"Works by Franz Schaden fetch up to 14,000 Euros at international auctionsOverall Dimensions: 69 x 70.5 cmThe oil painting depicts a blossoming bouquet of pink peonies in a floral decorated vase. The signed floral still life is a thematically very atypical picture painted by the Viennese genre painter Franz Schaden (1888 -1938). The artist often combined his realistic paintings with symbolic elements to present critical social accents. In Asian art the peony is often depicted as a symbol of wealth, honor, female beauty and longevity. In European art, it plays a major role as a symbol for the mother goddess Mary. The still life, in particular the detailed shape of the rose blossoms and the angular folds of the tablecloth, follows the characteristic pronounced realism of Schaden. The painting is of good optical appearance with usual traces of previous framing. In the center of the canvas there is a restoration measuring approximately 5.5 x 4 cm. At the rear side there is a bell-shaped label with the inscription "1944 KW SUHL" as the symbol mark of the restorer.

Oil Painting „Surf at a Rockbound Coast

Lot 47: Oil Painting „Surf at a Rockbound Coast", Franz Waldegg, 1930s

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on canvasAustria, 1930sFranz Waldegg (1888-1966) - Austrian landscape and marine painterSigned lower left „Waldegg"FramedOverall dimensions: 91,5 x 109 cmFranz Waldegg is known for his atmospheric and dynamic landscape and marina paintings. Many of his marine paintings have been painted at the coast of Italy and especially in front of Capri. This gave the artist the opportunity to let the special southern light take over a dynamic role in his paintings just as he did in the painting at hand. The both quiet and powerful painting shows the sea that rolls in regular waves towards the coast where it breaks at the rocks. A few sea gulls wheel above the rocks. The painting has presumably been created in a bay as a coastline can be seen in the distance to the left. The sea mirrors the soft light of the sky and thus a harmonic composition in blue, white and rose tones is being created according to the rhythm of the waves. The painting is visually very appealing, yet the canvas is very thin in places and shows several patches to the back. Few touch ups as well as small holes and abrasions are identifiable. The frame is in very good condition. The painting is signed in the lower left "Waldegg". The overall dimensions measure 91.5 x 109 cm, the dimensions of the canvas is 79 x 97 cm.Franz Waldegg (1888-1966)Franz Waldegg was born inVienna and studied at the local academy between 1903 and 1907 under J. Hauer. He was also a member of the Segantini-Group around Giovanni Segantini.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on canvasGermany, around 1930Hermann Wolff (1893-?)Signed lower left „H. Wolff."Framed in a large golden frameOverall dimensions: 91 x 121 cmGood conditionThis large sized landscape painting shows the view on the Königssee in Bavaria with the famous Königssee hotel in front of the impressive mountain scenery in the background. A farmer landing his small boat can be seen in the foreground. He is standing behind a heap of fresh grass that he has transported over the lake in his boat. The painting is especially impressive because of its large colour fields that alternate beautifully with each other thanks to the skillful composition. The green of the left side is taken up again by the small riparian strip on the other side, the light beige and brown of the shore in the foreground can again be found in the mountains vis-à-vis. So can the red brown of the trees. The lake's blue is taken up by the blue of the sky. Above all that stand the majestic snow-covered mountaintops that nearly melt into one with the white clouds surrounding them. This skillful game of colours makes this painting a hermetically closed and balanced work. The painting is basically in good condition, but has two holes and a bit of yellowing. The overall dimensions of the painting measure 91 x 121 cm, the dimensions of the canvas measure 71 x 101 cm. The painting is signed in the lower left "H. Wolff."
