Brown, a Portsmouth, New Hampshire native, began his artistic career with Pendleton Lithographers in Boston. In 1827, Brown went to Philadelphia, were he worked with Nathaniel Currier. By July 1835, Brown had moved to Utica, New York, where he abandoned lithography and began painting portraits and landscapes. After a ten year sojourn to Europe from 1839-1849, Brown returned to Utica, New York where he remained for the rest of his life.
