Description: Attributed to JosŽ Francisco Xavier de Salazar y Mendoza (1750-1802) Portrait of Dr. Robert Dow Oil on canvas, Bears signature Salazar Pinxit lower right Inscribed on letter To, Mrs Ker, at Greenock, from her brother, R. Dow at N. Orleans, March 25 1791 94 x 71cm (37 x 28in) Provenance: By descent from the sitter. Dr. Robert Dow, known to friends as David, was a physician at the Royal Hospital of New Orleans in 1778. Son of Presbyterian Minister Robert Dow and Juana Adie, Dr. Dow left Scotland and after some time in various areas of the West Indies, moved to Louisiana in 1776. He married Angelica Monsanto in 1781 and remained in Louisiana a few years after her death in 1821. They were very active in their community especially with Christ Church, the first Episcopal Church in New Orleans. In 1782, Salazar arrived in New Orleans from Merida in the Yucatan. For the next two decades he painted Louisiana's military, civic and religious leaders. We are grateful to The Williams Research Center at The Historic New Orleans Collection for the information they found on the sitter.

Jonathan Richardson (London 1665-1745) and Studio

Lot 82: Jonathan Richardson (London 1665-1745) and Studio

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Jonathan Richardson (London 1665-1745) and Studio Portrait of Matthew Prior Oil on canvas, 76 x 63.5cm (30 x 25in) Matthew Prior (1664-1721) was an English poet and diplomat, born the son of a Dorset joiner. When his father moved to London, he attended Westminster School until his father's death, when he left school, and was left in the care of his uncle. Here Lord Dorset found him and offered to contribute to the continuation of his education at Westminster. Against his patron's wish Prior accepted a scholarship recently founded at St John's College, Cambridge. He took his B.A. degree in 1686, and two years later became a fellow. In collaboration with his friend Montagu he wrote in 1687 the satirical City Mouse and Country Mouse. In an age when satirists could be sure of patronage and promotion, Montagu was promoted at once, and Prior, three years later, became secretary to the embassy at The Hague. Four years later, he was appointed a gentleman of the King's bedchamber and acted as one of the King's secretaries. The poet's knowledge of French was recognized when he was sent to Paris in attendance on the English ambassador. At this period Prior could say with good reason that Òhe had commonly business enough upon his hands, and was only a poet by accident.Ó His occasional poems during this period include an elegy on Queen Mary in 1695 and some lines on William III's escape from assassination in 1696. After his return from France Prior became under-secretary of state, sitting in Parliament from 1701, though losing influence as a Tory, until their return to power under Queen Anne in 1710. His diplomatic skills were prominent in negotiations with the French court until Anne's death in 1714, when the return to power of the Whigs saw Prior impeached by Robert Walpole. He was imprisoned for two years during which time he produced some of his longest and most ambitious writing, including The Progress of the Mind and Solomon, and other Poems on several Occasions. The income from its publication allowed him to live in comfort, but he did not long survive his enforced retirement from public life. He is buried in Westminster Abbey, and is commemorated in 'Poet's Corner'.
