Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on copperGermany, end of the 16th/beginning of the 17th century Probably Heinrich Göding (1531-1606) - German court painter from DresdenArtist monogram lower right, "HG"Later inscription on the verso, "H. Goltzius [...] Harlem"23 x 18.5 cmThis small oil painting on copper dates towards the end of the 16υth or beginning of the 17υth century and was probably done by the German court painter Heinrich Göding (1531-1606), who was active in Dresden and painted large panel paintings and frescos as well as smaller oil paintings. This work shows Jesus in the desert in front of a rock wall. The devil appears to him and tries to tempt him. Two angels are approaching from the upper right corner to provide Jesus with food. The buildings of a town are seen in the bluish background. The work is in age-related condition. The left corner of the copper panel is broken off and there are two holes stamped on the upper edge for hanging the painting on a wall. The coat of paint has been restored in some areas and is protected by a varnish. The painting displays craquelure; the paint was applied somewhat unevenly. The artist monogram "HG" is found lower right on the recto. The verso was inscribed later, "H. Goltzius [...] 1616 Harlem" but this attribution can be excluded. The measurements are 23 x 18.5 cm.

Painting „ HERCULES FORTECIA

Lot 2: Painting „ HERCULES FORTECIA ", Circle A. Maganza, around 1600

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on canvas, relinedItaly, around 1600Inscribed "HERCULES FORTECIA IUR.SCON. ÆTATIS SUÆ XXXII"Circle of Alessandro Maganza (1548-1632), Italian painterImpressive half portraitOverall dimensions, framed: 154 x 132 cmThis large scale half portrait shows a young man - according to the inscriptions on the painting he has been 32 years old at this time - in a black coat in front of a dark background. The young man has large dark eyes that look very seriously out of the painting. He is identified thanks to an inscription in the upper left as „Hercules Fortecia" („Ercole Fortezza"). To underline his respectability, Ercole has rested his hand upon a book, whose back is clearly visible. This reads „„PANDECTAE" which reveals the book to be the „pandects" or „digests", a compendium of Roman law from the late Antique. They have been discovered in the High Middle Ages and have immediately had a huge impact. They form the most important part of the tradition of the Roman Law. The inscription on the left that reads „Iuris Consultus" shows the depicted to be a jurisconsult. The painting is presumably by Alessandro Maganza (1548-1623) himself or someone of his closer circle. Maganza was a painter from Vicenza who lived in Venice during 1572-1576 where he got influenced by Tintoretto and Veronese. The painting at hand is especially similar to that of Giovanni Battista Imperiali that can today be found in the Pinacoteca Civica in Vicenza. The surname "Fortezza" was the name of a noble family in Vicenza. The painting is restored and protected by a varnish. The canvas has been relined. The overall dimensions, framed, are 154 x 132 cm, the dimensions of the stretcher frame are 127 x 104 cm. The painting is not signed. The elaborate frame is in good condition with traces of age and use.

Jan Borritsz Smit, Oil on Board, 'Ships in the Harbour', 1626

Lot 4: Jan Borritsz Smit, Oil on Board, 'Ships in the Harbour', 1626

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on boardNetherlands, 1626Jan Borritsz Smit (1598-1644) - Dutch marine painterSigned and dated on the red flag of the barque: IAN BORRITSZ SMIT 1626Measurements in frame: 54 x 90 cm Good, age-related condition Authentication: We thank the RKD (Rijksbureau voor kunsthist. Documentie) Provenance: Helene Tepelmann estate, birth name ViewegThis marine painting is due to its age and the good condition a true rarity even for the advanced collector of Old Master Paintings. The marine painter Jan Borritsz Smit painted this oil painting 'Ships in the Amsterdam Harbour' in 1626, in the middle of the Dutch Golden Age. Like with many other painters there is an identifiable component of national pride in Smit's work; the sheer number and variety of naval vessels give an instant impression of the power of the Netherlands, as a seafaring and trading nation. The silhouettes of mills along the shore suggest wealth and possession of grain; the fishing vessels imply rich waters. The most noticeable boat in the picture is the mighty barque on the left. Its stern has rich carvings and cannons reach out from its bow. The crew is cluttered towards the front of the ship, as if they could hardly await arrival on the shore. Jan Borritsz Smit was capable of both - to paint even minute details as well as creating a harmonious overall composition. The painting by Jan Borritsz Smit comes from the estate of Mrs. Helene Tepelmann, birth name Vieweg at Castle Wendhausen near Braunschweig. The painting was already auctioned once in 1940 by Lempertz, where it was described as follows:'JAN BORRITSZ SMIT, Marine painter of the 17υth century, Amsterdam. 95 ships at harbour. A number of vessels on grey waters. At the rear, a large barque, a sail barque on its right; a crowded rowboat in between. Several large vessels at shore towards the right. Inscription on the red flag of the barque: Jan Borritsz Smit 1626. Oil on board, H. 35, B. 70 cm."The painting is in age-related good condition, with framing marks along the margin and few touch ups in the sky (the motifs are left untouched by this). The board has a few minimal notches with loss of material in some places, especially in the top right corner for example. The painting is signed and dated on the red flag of the barque 'IAN BORRITSZ SMIT 1626". The elegant dark wood frame shows signs of age and use. The measurements in frame are 54 x 90 cm, the wood board alone measures 34 x 70 cm.Jan Borritsz. Smit (1598 - 1644)Little is known of the Dutch marine painter Jan Borritsz Smit except that he was born 1598 in Amsterdam, and died there in 1644. He was a reformist by belief, so there are a few accounts of Smit in the city's archives; an entry of his marriage in 1622 and the baptism of his son for example. The Dutch art-historian Abraham Bredius (1855-1946) mentions Jan Borritsz Smit in his monograph, where he writes that he saw paintings by Smit in several of Amsterdam's inventories. An artwork signed and dated 'J. Borriss Smit 1621' could also be found in the Nostitz collection, Prague.

Oil painting

Lot 7: Oil painting "Christ among the doctors", early 18th Century

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on canvasProbably Italy, early 18th CenturyAfter a painting by Jusepe de Ribera (1590-1652)Fine use of light and darkDimensions, framed: 111 x 137 cm Good conditionThis oil painting depicting "Christ among the doctors" was probably painted in the early 18υth Century or maybe even a little earlier. It is after the painting by Jusepe Ribera from 1630 with the same title that hangs in the "Kunsthistorisches Museum" in Vienna. Christ is shown as a young boy of twelve years old, debating with the learned Jewish doctors, which according to the bible is the first occasion on which Jesus taught. Christ is evidentially painted in a youthful way with big round eyes, rosy cheeks, a childish somewhat chubby face and small hands. The doctors in comparison are depicted elderly with beards and wrinkled foreheads. They seem engaged with their books, scrolls, magnifying glasses and each other trying to find proof of what Christ is teaching them and arguing his theories. The use of light and dark is in the style of Carravaggio's chiaroscuro. The background is so dark that one cannot make out any sense of interior or space and the faces are lit, with Jesus's face being lit the most. This is a skillfully painted interesting interpretation of the subject, which has been tackled by the likes of Albrecht Dürer. The oil painting is in an age related good condition. There are some signs of repainting and the canvas has been restored as well as it has been attached to a new stretcher. There are three small holes in the canvas and craquelure all over. Dimensions framed: 111 x 137 cm; unframed: 97 x 123 cm. The frame is from a different time period.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Pencil drawings on paperNiels Christian Hansen (1834-1922) - Danish portrait painter and photographerThree sheets signed, one without signatureOne sheet dated "92", two others inscribed with specifications Expert and realistic drawingsDimensions: 19,5 x 46 cm - 60 x 54 cmPaintings by Niels C. Hansens fetch up to 27.000 Euro in international auctionsProvenience: Part Hansen's recently in Berlin discovered portfolio map; Private PropertyThe Danish portrait painter and photographer Niels Christian Hansen has not only studied heads but has also done intense studies of the body's extremities. The correct perspective drawing of feet and hands has always been a special challenge for many artists. It was Giovanni Morelli (1816-1891), a famous art critic and physician, who wrote a whole theory about how to identify the painter of a tableau by studying the way hands and feet of the persons in the picture were executed. The ability to draw and paint feet from all angles and in the right foreshortening of the perspective has to be practiced hard. Looking at Hansen's drawings it can easily be said that he had achieved mastership in this field.Three sheets in good condition with traces of wear and age and some material loss along the margins. The sheet with the head shows extensive tears and material loss, therefore only a fragment of the head is left. The dimensions and inscriptions of the sheets are: 1. Foot "10 Zoll": 61 x 45 cm, signed ‚Niels Hansen', inscribed ‚10 Zoll'; 2. Foot "4 ¼ Zoll": 19,5 x 46 cm, signed and dated ‚Niels Hansen 92', inscribed ‚4 ¼ Zoll breit'; 3. Three feet: 61 x 44 cm, signed ‚N. Hansen' 4. Head and feet: approx. 60 x 54 cm. Niels Christian Hansen (1834-1922)N. C. Hansen studied at the Royal Danish Academy for Arts in 1851 and started working as a portrait painter in 1855/56. Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on cardboardGermany, around 1908Heinrich von Zügel (1850-1941) - German impressionistSigned lower left "H. Zügel" Overall dimensions, framed: 39 x 53 cmGood conditionProvenance: from an old Eastern German private collection; originally bought in a Danish auction house 25 years agoHeinrich von Zügel is one of the most famous German impressionists whose small animal paintings can be found in many museums and collections. The highest auction record for this artist has been achieved in 2001, when a painting with a sleeping shepherd dog next to his flock fetched almost 165.000 Euros. This oil painting by one of the most famous German painters Heinrich von Zügel depicts two cows in the moorland in the early morning hours. Heinrich von Zügel has painted the same motif several times and one copy is in the possession of the Neue Pinakothek in Munich and a watercolour has just recently been sold in a German auction house.Von Zügel is, amongst artists such as Max Liebermann and Lovis Corinth, one of the renowned German impressionists. He began painting outdoors in the late 19υth century and concentrated on creating a natural overall impression through a close study on the effect of light. He painted animals in an interaction with different elements, mainly water, but also air and light. This can be observed in many of his paintings from around 1908 on and is also notable in the soft change of his colour palette. The painting at hand gives proof of the artist's intentions. The two cows function as a mere staffage; the actual main person is the morning sun that is slowly pushing its way through the cloud filled sky and imbuing the canvas in the dull light that only occurs in the very early morning hours. The cattle turn away from the first glimpses of sunlight and try to enjoy their last few hours or maybe minutes of sleep. The white cow, whose face is turned towards the beholder, has its eyes still half closed and makes a very sleepy impression. In 1930 Heinrich von Zügel was granted an honorary doctorate by the faculty of veterinary medicine in Giessen, Germany. In the introductory remarks, his talents were nicely summed up: "Honored as the greatest animal painter, who with his exceptional works, manages to capture the character as well as the soul of animals set into harmonious landscapes, that due to the perception of light and the air, comprehend in to a perfect execution. (...)".The painting is in an age related good condition. Around the edges of the cardboard you see traces of the framing. The black paint shows some craquelure and at the lower right hand corner and the upper left hand corner there is minor paint loss. The painting is signed in the lower left hand corner with "H. Zügel". The overall dimensions, framed are 39 x 53 cm and without the frame: 24 x 38 cm.Heinrich von Zügel (1850-1941)Heinrich von Zügel started taking his first drawing classes and practiced the study of animals at the tender age of 14. He received a scholarship in 1869, which enabled him to study at the Art School in Stuttgart under Bernhard von Neher (1806-1886) and Heinrich von Rustige (1810-1900), where he came across oil paint for the first time. As off 1871 he gained international success and in 1878 he took part in the Great Exhibition in Paris. Study trips to Belgium, the Netherlands, France, and England followed. Especially the trips to Belgium and the Netherlands brought von Zügel closer to Impressionism and familiarized him with the art of paintingen plein air. With the beginning of the 1880s, Zügel painted in the moor landscape around the German city Dachau and began to paint the animals more as a natural part of the landscape and not as protagonists as before. In 1888 he was made an honorary member of the Art Academy of Munich, where he started teaching the subject of animal painting. Alfred Lichtwark, the director of the "Kunsthalle Hamburg" commissioned him to arrange a collection of paintings of Hamburg. He taught at the Academy until his 70υth Birthday and died in Munich at the age of 91 in 1941.

Created in the 19th and 20th Century, the bronzes show human figures, often of an exotic look, humans with animals and sometimes animals alone. The bronzes have been so popular that there had been more than 80 manufacturers only in Vienna. Since a huge amount of these bronzes has been melted during the wars, the surviving bronzes are very popular and rare.Franz Xaver Bergmann (1861-1936)Franz Xaver Bergmann was the son of a bronze caster with the same name who had a small bronze foundry in Vienna. Bergmann inherited the foundry of his father and reopened it in 1900. Many of the designs however, stem from the old sketch books of his father. The foundry was especially famous for its very naturalistic cold painted animal bronzes. Cold painted bronzes differ to fire glazed ones as the glaze can be applied in more layers. The knowledge on how to cold glaze is lost which makes the Bergmann bronzes especially valuable.

Curts fetch up to 9.200,- Euros in international auctionsDimensions: w 25 cm x d 25 cm x h 3.8 cm; Height of the bronze statuette: 13 cmVery good conditionThis highly elegant ashtray has been made of a generous onyx bowl and a fine, fire-gilded bronze statuette of St George on horseback. The bowl has indentations for the deposition of cigars on all four corners. The stone is of an elegant, eggshell white and white grain. The fine fire-gilded bronze statuette by the Viennese artist T. Mariano Bertuchi (1884-1955), Two sketchbooks, 1944-51

Lot 40: Mariano Bertuchi (1884-1955), Two sketchbooks, 1944-51

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Watercolour, ink, pencil, crayon on paperSpain and Africa, 1944-1951Mariano Bertuchi (1884-1955) - Spanish painterMany of the sketches are dated and inscribedOverall dimensions of each book: 10 x 16 cm and 22 x 15 cmPages: 80 sheets and 17 sheetsGood conditionMariano Bertuchi spent his life between the glamorous Spanish South Coast and the poor North of Africa. His drawings live from the tension and the contrast between these two worlds. These two sketchbooks belonged to the Spanish artist Mariano Bertuchi, who used them near to the end of his life. The smaller sketch book comprises drawings of the landscapes, cities, people and animals in Morocco of the years between 1944 and 1946. Ink drawings, mostly coloured, show images of southern looking men and women in colourful robes going about their day to day business. These colourful, small impressions give an idea of the excellent ability of the artist to demonstrate his capacity as well as his admiration for the country and its people in a fast and accurate manner. Each of the small drawings stands out; but together they appear like a travel brochure from another time. The second sketchbook comprises studies of famous beauties from the 1950s who Mariano Bertuchi portrayed during their summer vacations in Marbella. Ingrid Bergmann, Bette Davis, Ava Gardner, Nancy Sinatra and Rita Hayworth were portrayed by him and the little drawings were given quite humoristic titles such as „Rita doesn't like short cuts" or „Ingrid Bergmann enjoyed a big laugh". These glamorous watercolours are set against sketches of the local workers and inhabitants that Bertuchi also captured in this book. The watercolour of Ingrid Bergmann, adorned with jewels and holding a martini glass, for example is put in direct contrast to a pencil drawing of a naked black baby that anxiously looks out of a cloth, which it sits in. Another double page shows a dancer in a tutu in watercolour on one page set against a pencil drawing of men who escaped a massacre on the other. Bertuchi repeatedly sets the glamorous world of the rich and famous in watercolour against the poverty of the normal people in pencil - just as he experienced it when travelling between the worlds of Marbella and Morocco. The sketchbooks are in good, but used condition. Both books have a few loose pages. The dimensions are 10 x 16 cm and 22 x 15 cm. The smaller sketchbook has about 80 pages and the larger one 17 pages, which are mostly painted on both sides. The drawings are done in pencil, ink and watercolours and mostly dated or inscribed.Mariano Bertuchi Nieto (1884-1955)Mariano Bertuchi was born in 1884 in Granada. He began his education under the landscape artist José Larrocha (1850-1933) and studied later at the Academy for Fine Arts in San Felipe and at the university in Madrid. When the Second Moroccan War broke out in 1921, Bertuchi was one of the artists who came along next to journalists and photographers to document the events. The painter was instantly fascinated by the country and moved there permanently. He became the chief inspector of Fine Arts Services in the Protectorate and founded the school for Fine Arts in Tetouan. Mariano Bertuchi Nieto's works can be found in numerous public collections.

Bilger has left a unique oeuvre of prints. But she also worked as a glass painter. The height of her success dates to the 1950s. This was followed by her highly complex and so far hardly noticed later work with textile works, glass paintings, watercolors and drawings. Bilger's compositions are reminiscent of Alfred Kubin, the Bible, fairy tales and folk songs.
