Revolutionary War Era British Blunder Buss.

Lot 3: Revolutionary War Era British Blunder Buss.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: The brass barrel is octagonal to round 16" barrel with a finely faceted baluster molding at the breech. The barrel shows worn but visible British view and proof marks as well as an "I H" makers mark (possibly John Harvey) with an intaglio diamond above the stamped initials; In addition, the barrel has engraved floral patterns at the breech and is engraved "London". The top barrel flat has chevron engraving at the junction of the octagon-to-round transition. The original flintlock is the earlier Tower style with only a single screw showing (the rear screw) behind the cock which has a molded oval thumb piece and also a trefoil tailed frizzen spring. The lock is engraved with the "Crown and GR" as well as the Broad arrow, denoting government ownership. The walnut stock is fitted with a full complement of "first model" type brass mountings, the butt cap and trigger guard display "leafage/scroll" engravings. The upper flared ramrod ferrule has a simple flare, much like the so called Pratt improvement. The walnut stock has a soft, faded "nut brown color" with the typical raised oval apron around the iron barrel tang. There is a branded "RT" on both sides of the butt stock. There is a "1/4" wide by 1 1/2" long patch below the very front of the locks cavity while there is evidence of minor "worm" holes (now filled) and also a small triangular patch alongside the barrel on the upper side above the front ferrule. In addition, the ebony ramrod has its original brass tamping cap and original worm screw at its lower end. One would assume that this piece was a "custom" officers piece and is the finest early blunder -buss to be yet offered by this auction house. In spite of the "flared" upper ramrod ferrule, I would consider this piece to have been made in the 1750s or 1760s.

British Fowling Piece.

Lot 4: British Fowling Piece.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: The full-round 57 1/2" barrel has a "hooked" breech, and is engraved "London" on the top flat with Birmingham proofs. The barrel may possibly have been shortened at the muzzle end, during its period of use. The walnut stock's contour and profile all suggest the post-Revolutionary War era, dating to 1790 or 1800. The lock is a British military style but has its markings removed which suggests that it may be the second lock, but done in period as the piece is still in its original flintlock configuration. The engraved brass hardware is classic 2nd half of the 18th century from and style with its engravings. The "acorn" Finial of the trigger guard is now missing, (an easily made repair). The walnut stock has its original patina but has had a glossy surface added (in modern years), which could be easily removed.

Samuel Morrison Kentucky Rifle.

Lot 5: Samuel Morrison Kentucky Rifle.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: This pleasing gun was made in Milton, Pennsylvania, along with the hunting bag horn and full accessories which came with it. This very pleasing rifle is signed "S.M." on the 39" full-octagonal, rifled barrel and has its original lock plate ( fine re-conversion) and is completely original in all other respects. The curly maple stock has its original finish and carries all of its brass hardware, including the handsome "spread-wing" Eagle final on the patch box with four large piercing in the side plates, flanking the lid. There are eight silver inlays, including a hunter's star on the cheek rest, a brass cheek plate fore-arm wear plate and a 5" long brass toe plate. The well-designed "set-triggers" reflect the gun smith's fine eye for detailing. This rifle is in the same state as when it was made and used, and it was very "well-cared for" by its owner.

Zachariah Albright Attributed Kentucky Rifle.

Lot 6: Zachariah Albright Attributed Kentucky Rifle.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: This rifle has a fine curly-maple stock and a full 37 1/2" octagonal barrel, with a oxidized brown surface. The percussion lock is original, while the brass hardware has an uncleaned, "as-found," patina. The brass patch box, unengraved, has seven piercing, and is typical of the Union/Center County style. There are eight silver forestock inlays with a silver thumb piece and also a fish under the cheek piece. In addition, the original amber-colored finished stock has nice incised carving behind the cheek piece. The entire rifle is in its original, untouched surface and there are two small replacement pieces of wood "fore and aft" of the upper portion of the lock at the juncture of the front trigger-guard stud, there is a "clean-break," which has been stabilized with a "hidden Dutchman" (spline) inside the lock cavity. Otherwise this attractive Kentucky has original surface, excellent curl, and nice appointments and is original throughout.

Young Boy's (Or Lady's) Kentucky Rifle.

Lot 7: Young Boy's (Or Lady's) Kentucky Rifle.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: This rifle has a wonderful "horse head" finial on its four-piece, brass patch box, with scrolled engraving, typical of Lancaster area gun smiths, such as Henry Albright or Abraham Schweitzer, both of whom relocated from Lancaster to the Chambersburg, Franklin County area in the early 19th century. The rifle has a full octagonal (29 1/2") barrel with rifle sights and a dark brown, pleasing surface as does the flintlock ( a very nice re-conversion). The maple stock also has a pleasing warm, patina and shows its original surface with a variety of "nut brown and black' colors. There are three silver inlays, one being an engraved diamond on the cheek piece and a 5" long brass toe plate. The brass trigger guard and the rear ferrule show a "scaling-back" of proportions as does the very short fore-arm. There is a 5 1/2" - 6" long piece of wood carefully added to the upper forestock with a replacement nose-cap. All in all, this is a very uncommon, attractive youth's (or young lady) rifle.

Barnett Marked Flintlock Rifle.

Lot 8: Barnett Marked Flintlock Rifle.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: A mid-19th century "commercial/trade" British musketoon marked by Barnett, London on its original flintlock, with proof and view marks on the 30" iron barrel. The brass hardware and stock follows the late pattern British military style form, and the piece has its original sling swivels and ramrod. The stock has crisp edges and a simple "oil" finish. All metal is polished bright, and the possibility that this piece was never used, or unissued, may account for its virtually new condition! In addition, the walnut stock has an oval brand "Barnett- Minories London" on the outboard side of the butt in front of the buttplate; also there is a "JW" stamped behind the rear extension of the trigger guard. An exceptional example with virtually new condition.

Light Dragoon Pistol Model 1759/78.

Lot 9: Light Dragoon Pistol Model 1759/78.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: (Refer: Geo.Neuman's Weapons of the American Revolution, p.237 # 6 P.P.) with "Dublin Castle". Original Flintlock . Marked with a "Crown over G R" and the "Broad Arrow". The brown-black surfaced 9" barrel has its proof marks intact, and the brass mounts are original, including (possibly) its original brass-typed ramrod. The stock shows its usage and wear but is "fully intact" with numerous "pock-marks,"and has an "old break" (reglued tightly) at the wrist of the pistol grip. The walnut stock has a dark, mellow finish and has the raised apron around the barrel tang. Additionally, there is an "I.W," inscribed on the side plate. The gun shows its active history, undoubtedly coming here in the era of the American Revolution and probably left here.

Early British

Lot 10: Early British "Trade Pistol".

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: This piece has an 8 1/2" round iron barrel with early proof marks and an "engraved" baluster-turned breech and tang. The barrel has an "untouched" gray-oxidation with the early "trade" style original flintlock (original) bearing the name "JENKINS" and having scroll engraving at its tail and on its cock. The frizzen is "squared" at the top and the bridle-less pan is faceted. The engraved brass hardware has classic "Trade" style engraving with a large "Snowflake" (or compass star) engraved on the trigger-guard bow. The raised acanthus-leaf escutcheon is indicative that this piece could have been a "chiefs-grade" piece, with an arrowhead final on the trigger-guard and also engraved on the butt cap finial. The walnut stock has its original varnish finish and a rich patina. There is an old missing 4" long sliver missing on the upper right forestock, and a "chip-out" in front of the lock. The form and style of this pistol date it to the 1750s or 1760s. The piece is in untouched, original, condition, never having been enhanced by a modern collector, fortunately.

British Cavalry Pistol by Wm Brazier.

Lot 12: British Cavalry Pistol by Wm Brazier.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: A very early British Cavalry or Sea Service pistol, dating to the first quarter of the 18th century or early second quarter, by a rarely- found maker, "WM BRAZIER" who began his career in 1702 as an apprentice in London. The "11 1/2" long, baluster-breeched barrel has the early proof marks and the first initial "W", (the "B" not as legible) and has been cleaned at one time, showing minor surface etching, as is the same with the original flint lock. The "W" is hidden beneath the cock (at full rest), and this lock shows the transition from a three-screw lock to a two-screw lock. The brass mountings are intact, having been lightly polished at one time. The trigger guard is correctly surface-mounted on the walnut stock, which has an old varnish surface. The butt cap area shows some chipping where wood shrinkage occurred. Otherwise this rare, early "W.BRAZIER" pistol is complete including a "period" ramrod.

Parker's Snow & Co. Model 1861 Musket.

Lot 37: Parker's Snow & Co. Model 1861 Musket.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Rare 1863 Musket, .58 Cal. James Mulholland contract with Miller conversion. Manufactured in 1863. Any Parker Snow/Meriden CT marked musket is relatively rare and hard-to-find and most are encountered with the 1864 date. This example is one of only 5,502 delivery in 1863 under the James Mulholland contract of 1861. It is also the rarely seen two-band Musketoon version with a 31" barrel. The percussion action lock was converted between 1865 and 1867 with the Miller style conversion to a .58 caliber breechloader. Only 2,000 muskets of any configuration received this conversion. The musket shows its armory "white" finish throughout, just turning to a mottled gray/brown patina. The markings are all sharp and crisp and the action cocks and fired tight. The Miller conversion is complete and functions perfectly, including the spring loaded retracting cartridge extractor. The bore is excellent, hardly showing any signs of being fired. Correct and original front and rear sighed, "U" inspected barrel bands, and US marked buttplate. Original sling swivels and ramrod are present. The wood is 100% untouched and shows nice patina and color. There are some age handling marks here and there on the buttstock and a rack number "13" is stamped just behind the trigger guard. There is one old hairline crack running back about four inches from the fore end cap on the left side, but it is hardly worth noting. A very unusual variant of the M1861 and in very nice condition.Condition (Very Good).
