Meiji Period Vase-Workshop of Noboru Nogawa, Japan

Estimate: $1,000 - $2,000

Description: Meiji Period Vase-Workshop of Noboru Nogawa, Japan. Depicting a rooster perched on a cherry blossom tree. Marked on base. Height: 7 inches. Workshop of Noboru Nogawa (Kyoto), founded in 1825. Nogawa acted both as a manufacturer and dealer and ran a very popular shop on 35 Shijo Otabicho, as well as showrooms in the Kyoto Hotel and the Miyako Hotel, the city’s most exclusive hotels. Although there is surprisingly little documentation on the company, it appears to have been well-known at the time. It exhibited at several large overseas exhibitions between 1893 (Meiji 26) and 1910 (Meiji 43) and the Kyoto shop was listed in A Handbook for Travellers in Japan written by the famous British Japanologist Basil Hall Chamberlain (1850–1935) and telecommunications specialist William B. Mason (1853-1923). First published in 1889 (Meiji 22), this was for decades the most authoritative English language guide on Japan. The company introduced itself as “a manufacturer of bronze and fine art wares,” which included garden items, birds, animals, human figures, Buddhas, gongs and bells, vases, lanterns and small pieces. Nogawa also sold cloisonné ware, damascene works, ivory carving, lacquer ware, pearls, prints and Satsuma ware.

Josef Israels (1824 - 1911) Oil/Canvas

Estimate: $6,000 - $8,000

Description: Jozef Israels was educated at the Amsterdam Academy (1840) and at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, under Vernet and Delaroche. On his return to Amsterdam in 1847, he worked as a historical and religious painter and increasingly, from 1852, concentrated on Dutch history. The work for which he was best known dates from the 1860s, when his brushwork loosened and he developed a soft tonal range of grays and browns (e.g. Maternal Bliss, 1890, Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum). In the 1870's he settled in The Hague and became one of the leading members of The Hague School. He has been called the "Dutch Millet" due to his similar subject matter and sympathy for the poor (e.g. Growing Old, 1878, The Hague). During his lifetime Israels won great popularity for his piously sentimental approach to his work. Israels' paintings were especially popular in Britain after Fishermen Carrying a Drowned Man (1861, London, National Gallery) was exhibited at the Royal Academy. His participation in the Paris Exhibition of 1878 cemented Israel's reputation. His son, Isaac (1865-1934) also worked at The Hague, but in a style almost completely independent of his father's. In his later life Israels' work was influenced by his son, towards a lighter, more impressionistic palette. Max Liebermann, his pupil and contemporary, wrote that "Israels first realized himself at an age at which most painters have already produced their best work; and, had he had the misfortune to die at forty, Holland would have been unable to boast of one of her greatest sons." Sight Size: 12 x 15.25 in. Overall Size: 21.25 x 24.75 in.

Attr. Lilian Hale (1880 - 1963)

Estimate: $10,000 - $20,000

Description: Attr. Lilian Hale (1880 - 1963) Portrait of a young woman in a kimono. Possibly Agnes Dogget. Oil on canvas laid on board. Sight Size: 29 x 23 in. Overall Size: 35 x 29.25 in. Unsigned. Hale attended the Hartford Art School in Connecticut where her talents were noticed by William Merritt Chase, one of the country's renowned Impressionists, who proved to be her major influence. She attended Chase's summer school at Shinnecock, Long Island, and in 1900, having earned a scholarship from the Hartford Art Society, she began classes at the School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts*. She was a student of Edmund Tarbell and Philip Leslie Hale, whom she married in 1902. After graduating from the Museum School in 1904 and a trip to Europe, she began annual exhibitions in Boston and received wide acclaim for the beauty of her figure and still life paintings and the quality of their draftsmanship and drawing. The birth of her daughter, Anna Westcott Hale, in 1908 caused her to give up her Boston Fenway Studio where she had worked with leading artists including Frank Benson, Joseph De Camp, her husband, and sometimes John Singer Sargent. In 1910, she won the Bronze Medal at the Buenos Aires Exposition and the Gold Medal at the Pan-Pacific Exposition in 1915. She continued to exhibit widely, and in the 1920s gained the attention of Duncan Phillips, a major patron of the arts who created The Phillips Museum in Washington D.C. She also gained many portrait clients and was elected a member of the National Association of Portrait Painters*. In 1927, she won the prestigious Altman Prize* at the National Academy of Design* for her Portrait of Taylor Hardin. The situation was unusual in two respects-- she was the first woman to win that prize, and the portrait was one of her few male subjects.
