Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Bauer (Franz Andreas) Delineations of Exotick Plants cultivated in the Royal Garden at Kew, Parts 1 & 2 only (of 3), first edition, limited to 90 and 80 copies respectively (although 10 of Part 1 were spoilt during colouring), 20 superb hand-coloured plates of heathers by Mackenzie and others after Franz Bauer, some very light marginal soiling, sewn in original boards, uncut, paper label on upper covers, rubbed and soiled, spines and corners a little worn, preserved in red morocco-backed cloth drop-back box, spine gilt, a little faded, [Great Flower Books p. 73; Henrey 437; Hunt 747; Nissen BBI 97], folio, W.Aiton, 1796-[97]. The work was published by William Aiton, head gardener at Kew, with the intention of issuing annual instalments and covering many species. After the publication of the third part in 1803 (in an edition of only 50 copies), the project was abandoned due to cost and the death of Daniel Mackenzie who engraved the plates, hence all 30 plates depict heathers from the Cape. In his Preface Sir Joseph Banks comments that the plates are so accurate that it was unnecessary to supply any descriptions. Wilfred Blunt considered Bauer to be the greatest botanical artist of all time, on the basis of this work. ***"This is without doubt one of the most beautifully illustrated flower books." Hunt.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Bergeret (Jean Pierre) Phytonomatotechnie Universelle, 3 vol. in 2, first edition, half-titles to vol.1 & 2, no half-title or title to vol.3 (as issued), 320 engraved plates by Poisson printed in green, red or brown, all hand-coloured, lacking the folding table in vol.3, some occasional spotting or soiling but generally plates very clean, a few trimmed to platemark, bookplate of Stratton Street Library of Harriot, Duchess of St.Albans, vol.1 handsome contemporary green morocco, covers with elaborate gilt borders and cornerpieces, spine gilt in compartments with red morocco labels, g.e., rubbed, vol.2 contemporary half green straight-grain morocco, spine gilt with red morocco labels, a little worn, joints split, [Great Flower Books p.75; Nissen BBI 145, both incorrectly calling for 328 plates], folio, Paris, for the Author..., 1783. Bergeret devised a system of naming plants with a combination of letters each of which would denote a particular characteristic, and which would allow universal recognition. This well-intentioned but bizarre system would have resulted in, for example, Plantago major L. becoming GIQGYABIAHUQZEZ; fortunately it was not adopted. ***Rare; the 1783 prospectus announced the publication of 100 coloured copies and 100 uncoloured, but there were probably far fewer produced. Alll the bibliographies call for 328 plates but this now seems to be accepted as incorrect..

Description: Blossfeldt (Karl) Urformen der Kunst: Photographische Pflanzenbilder, second edition, 96 photographic illustrations, contemporary ink inscription on front free endpaper, original beige cloth blocked in red, dust-jacket, slightly rubbed and soiled, 4to, Berlin, 1935. and three different sizes of negatives. His plants were shot in front of neutral backgrounds and lit with weak daylight whenever possible. Direct lighting was used to define form and sharp focus to expose detail and texture. His first book Urformen der Kunst (Archetypes of Art) was published in 1928 and his second Wundergarten der Natur (The Wonder Garden of Nature) was in 1932, the year he died. His third and final book, Wunder in der Natur was published posthumously in 1942. ***Karl Blossfeldt started his career as an apprentice sculptor at the Art Ironworks and Foundry in Berlin but, influenced by the contemporary Art Nouveau fascination with the flowing forms of plants, he turned to photography. The 'New Objectivity' style abandoned the soft-focus, impressionistic style in favour of a direct-lighting, sharp-focus approach. Self-taught in photography, Blossfeldt photographed nothing but plants for thirty-five years taking his first photographs around 1896. He worked in his laboratory in Berlin, using a home-made plate camera.
