Description: Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, il Guercino (Italian, 1591-1666) Cupid returning an Arrow to his Quiver red chalk and stumping, laid down on to canvas h:24 w: 15 cm Provenance: From the collection of Ann Gore. The elegance of the figure's pose, the subtlety of the chiaroscuro (from the highlight in the child's body to the velvety shadow in most of his face and to the dark accents in his downcast eyes) and the beautifully counterbalanced angle of the wings to his body contribute to the satisfying way in which the figure fills the compositional space. In a number of drawings by Guercino of Cupid with his quiver, from the mid-1640s, some in red chalk and now mostly lost, but recorded in retouched offsets, it is evident that this sheet is from Guercino's own hand. Two pen-and-ink studies by Guercino show precisely the same figure type, lit in the same way, one in the British Museum, London (inv. no. 1895-9-15-707; N. Turner and C. Plazzotta, Drawings by Guercino from British Collections, London, 1991, p. 264, no. 51; and Capturing the Sublime, Italian Drawings of the Renaissance and Baroque, exh. cat. ed. by S. Folds McCullagh, Art Institute of Chicago, 2012, p. 158, no. 86). Around 1700, a significant proportion of the drawings by Guercino and his two nephews, Benedetto and Cesare Gennari, were displayed in frames on the walls of the two properties belonging to Benedetto and Cesare Gennari - the Casa Gennari, in the centre of Bologna, and their country villa just outside at Bel Poggio. Irrespective of both their authorship and the property in which they were kept, these framed drawings were laid on to canvas, rather than onto a card or paper backing, as was the normal practice in the mounting drawings from the eighteenth century onwards. The drawings of Guercino and his school from the Royal Library, Windsor Castle, the largest surviving fragment of the Guercino and Guercino school drawings with a Gennari provenance, includes many examples of drawings by the master and his two main followers laid down in this way. The twentieth-century inscription in biro on the paper backing giving the Cupid Returning an Arrow to his Quiver to Cesare Gennari is incorrect. Although Cesare certainly favoured the medium of red chalk, his use of the medium is routine and does not have the subtleties of execution seen in his uncle's use of the technique. Cesare was an adviser to the Florentine family of the Medici, tipping them off when significant works by Bolognese painters came up for sale in the city. Perhaps Cesare's connection with the Medici explains the existence of the fine group of drawings by Cesare in the Uffizi, many of which are in red chalk. The numerous differences in style between this Uffizi group and the present Cupid Returning an Arrow to his Quiver surely demonstrates that the latter cannot possibly be by him (Guercino, la scuola, la maniera. Other Notes: The prominent collection mark is that of Colonel Henry Stephen Olivier (1796-1866) of Potterne Manor, Wiltshire (F. He began collecting with his purchase in Paris of a folder of drawings, subsequently building on this foundation with his return to England. His interests focused mainly on the Italian and Dutch Schools. Dr. Paul Taylor, of the Photo Library, the Warburg Institute, London, has kindly identified the subject, which is taken from Ariosto's Orlando furioso, Canto 22, verses 36-44. The helmeted warrior in the centre of the composition, who stops in alarm at the sight of a naked young woman lying beside the road, is Bradamante, while behind him is his guide Ruggiero. In the sky above the woman, Cupid breaks his bow to indicate the woman's history of star-crossed lovers. Ruggiero and Bradamante come across the woman, much troubled in her demeanour ("molto era nel viso mesta"), as they leave the forest near the Abbey at Vallombrosa. The young men comfort her and the kindly Ruggiero resolves to offer her help. An earlier study for the same composition, less pleasingly composed and not as elaborate, is in the Graphische Sammlung, Stuttgart, where the subject is not identified (inv. II/ 310; Simone Cantarini detto il Pesarese, 1612-1648, exh. cat. by A. Emiliani, et al., exh. cat. Bologna, Pinacoteca Nazionale, and Accademia di Belle Arti, p. 295, no II 82). In the Stuttgart drawing, Bradamante stands in the centre of the design, rather than more pleasingly here, in the right-hand half of the composition, in the midst of his two companions. In the present drawing, Cantarini is seen at the height of his powers as a draughtsman, adapting Guido Reni's elegant style of red chalk drawing, with its echoes of sixteenth-century Emilian draughtsmen, such as Parmigianino, into an easier, more graceful manner. On stylistic grounds, it must date, from the second half of the 1630s, at the time of many of Cantarini's best-known etchings.

The sitter of this moving portrait is Blanche Lillian Sauter (1864-1924), sister of the renowned author John Galsworthy (awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1922 and most famous for 'The Forsythe Saga') who was a close friend of the artist. Lillian was married to the Bavarian born artist Georg Sauter (1866-1937), a friend of de Smet who had emigrated to England in 1889. After the outbreak of the First World War, Sauter, having never become a fully naturalized British citizen, was - in spite of protests and petitions from his circle of friends - interned in December 1915 along with his son Rudolph. Galsworthy petitioned the Government for Sauter's release, wrote many letters, and personally called on cabinet ministers to no avail. This portrait, drawn in July 1916, catches the immense sadness of Lillian after the internment of her husband and son. She is depicted in a sombre mourning dress, her wedding ring as a poignant reminder of her commitment to her absent husband with her gaze vacant, directed inward more than out. Whether Sauter, to whom this portrait is dedicated, ever saw this portrait is uncertain. He was repatriated to Germany in early 1917 and was left with such a hatred for England that he refused to return to his wife in London. Lilian's heart was broken and she died in 1924. Late Impressionist and Symbolist influences are clearly visible in this haunting portrait, which sums up Lillian's grief and reflects upon the immensely difficult situation she endured with solemn dignity. Furthermore, it is a striking document of Anglo-German relations during WWI. The artist, who lived and worked in England between 1914 and 1918, is much acclaimed and his works achieve high prices on the art market. In his native Belgium a small museum is dedicated solely to his works. Belgian art of this period, long neglected, is now a very fashionable and popular field in the art market these days, especially the contemporary of Le Smet, Ensor. The present portrait is very typical of Belgian late Symbolist portraiture. Leon de Smet is an outstandingly good painter. His portraits of women are the best, besides his beautiful still lifes.
