Exceptionally fine thread worked to resemble an ink sketch after a 1804 engraving of Admiral Horatio Lord Nelson's Surrey estate . Note on reverse names the maker as Jane Manton. In an old gilt frame, 22.25"h. 28.25"w. Additional information on the maker gives her married name and death date. She is probably the daughter born in 1796 to John and Jane Manton of Walsall, Stafford, and who married Francis Mulliner in 1822. Lord Nelson purchased Manton Place in 1802 and resided there with Sir William and Lady Emma Hamilton until his death in the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.

Condition Report: A few splits in the cloud areas and a few lighter spots in the same area. Very minor thread breakage, mainly on the bridge. The engraving this was based was drawn by Edward Hawke Locker. Manton Place figured in the notoriety surrounding Lord Nelson and Lady Hamilton. Nelson left it to her but she was unable to keep it up and it was torn down in 1821 or 1846 according to differing accounts. Condition Report: Phillips, who owned this clock, was the curator of the Garvan Collection at the Yale University Art Galleries. Older refinishing and replaced finials. Minor insect damage to the backboard. Feet appear original, as do 3 of the 4 glue blocks. The goosenecks on the hood appear original (one has a crack on the back side), but the carved rosette facings may be older replacements. The dial has some craquelure, and the pewter hands are likely replacements. A note on the inside indicates that the clock was purchased at a country auction in the 1870s by William Pool and that it descended to his daughter, Rebekah.
