Description: A Staffordshire pearlware dated commemorative copper-lustre jug, decorated with a trade arms with tea canisters and a Chinaman smoking a pipe, inscribed Ralph Bagshaw Uttoxeter and dated 1821 and with verse I do not know what man to trust. So pay to day I'll trust tomorrow., 17cm high; and three other items of pearlware, comprising; a yellow-ground and silver-lustre jug, a pink-lustre jug and a copper-lustre mug, second quarter 19th century. The Bagshaw family appear in a variety of sources relating to Uttoxeter and Staffordshire in the 19th century and they include a noted solicitor and JP, Ralph Bagshaw Jnr., possibly the son of the Ralph inscribed here. A Ralph Bagshaw also appears in the Session Papers of the House of Lords for 1837 in connection with Turnpike Trusts (Darley Moor & Ellaston). Bagshaws also went on to form partnerships with the local firm of auctioneers that still bears their name. It would seem likely that the Ralph of this jug was probably a prominent local merchant, hence the arms.
