After or School of Francesco de Mura Painting, The Penitent Magdalene

Lot 286: After or School of Francesco de Mura Painting, The Penitent Magdalene

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: After or School of Francesco de Mura painting, The Penitent Magdalene. The painting carries a frame of considerable distinction whose gold and silver parcel-gilding is almost 100% intact. The present composition appears to be a copy after an unidentified work by Francesco de Mura, a pupil of Francesco Solimena (1657-1747). De Mura was one of the premiere painters of religious and historical compositions in 18th-century Naples during and after the reign of Charles VII, the Bourbon King of Naples (from 1735), the builder of the great palace of Caserta who, in 1759, inherited the throne of Spain as King Charles III. De Mura continued the tradition of his master with respect to commissions on a grand scale on behalf of the royal family and meanwhile executed innumerable easel paintings for private collectors, of which the unknown prototype of the present work is surely an example. A touching representation of the repentant Mary Magdalene. This lot was examined, researched, and described by Roger Ward, PhD. Roger Ward completed his MA and PhD degrees at the Courtauld Institute of Art, London. He is currently an adjunct curator and guest curator at several museums, a consultant for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for the repatriation and restitution of confiscated works of art, and an expert advisor ; c. 1696-1782

Condition Report: good condition, notwithstanding an old and discolored layer of varnish, frame of gold and silver parcel-gilding is almost 100% intact. Due to the age of this item, please see detail photos or inspect in person.

Lot 287: "Amorino Dormiente" Painting, Massimo Stanzione

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: "Amorino Dormiente (Sleeping Cupid)" by Massimo Stanzione (1586-1656). Inscribed (on the reverse) Il Cavaliere Massimo for Massimo Stanzione. The frame of extremely fine quality, with its beautiful gilding and forged-iron hanging hook, has never been altered and appears to be the original. Stanzione was one of the leading painters of Naples in the first half of the 17th century, eclipsed only by Jusepe de Ribera (1591-1652) with respect to the prestige of his innumerable commissions. Many of Stanzione's grand altarpieces remain in situ but his repertoire was prodigious in terms of its diversity and his portraits, mythologies, and depictions of religious subjects are dispersed worldwide. His art was strongly influenced by that of Caravaggio (in Naples 1606 and 1609/10) and, later, by the Bolognese who sojourned in Naples such as Guido Reni and Domenichino; he was a collaborator with Artemesia Gentileschi on more than one occasion. This lot was examined, researched, and described by Roger Ward, PhD. Roger Ward completed his MA and PhD degrees at the Courtauld Institute of Art, London. He is currently an adjunct curator and guest curator at several museums, a consultant for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for the repatriation and restitution of confiscated works of art, and an expert advisor. ; c. 1586-1656

Condition Report: This example appears never to have been cleaned: the old, discolored varnish layer is grimy. The paint surface is, nonetheless, remarkably well preserved with impasto in the clouds of the sky, for example. The unlined canvas is in remarkably good condition; a few small and scattered holes have been neatly patched on the reverse. The frame has never been altered and appears to be the original. See detail pictures.

An Aztecan representation of The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist, New Spain [Mexico], 17th-century, tempera and oil(?) on wood panel, 20.5"h, 14.5"w (31"h, 24.5"w frame)(the composition typically features the executioner, Salome (who receives the severed head), and between them the decapitated Baptist, whose cross carries a banderole inscribed with the familiar admonition ECCE AGNUS DEI ("Behold, the Lamb of God!")). Christian Soul with the Guardian Angel, New Spain [Mexico]?, 18th-century, tempera on canvas, 17.25"h, 12.25"w (20.25"h, 15.25"w frame). An ex-voto: Vision of the Madonna and Child in a Hospital or Infirmary, Italian, Late 19th-century, oil on canvas, 20.5"h, 20.5"w (the painting bears an original inscription, in black paint, at the bottom edge).

School of Paolo Porpora Painting, Two Bouquets on Stone Ledge

Lot 290: School of Paolo Porpora Painting, Two Bouquets on Stone Ledge

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: School of Paolo Porpora painting, two floral bouquets on a stone ledge. Despite damage, the very fine, old frame retains much of its original gilding. Not much is known about the career of Porpora but he was immensely prolific, a testament to his obvious popularity throughout the middle decades of the 17th century. Among the many still-life painters in Naples, Porpora was renowned as a specialist in the art of floral bouquets rather than of cornucopiae of fruit and vegetables, or of mountains of marine creatures, which were in equally great demand. In the mid 1650s Porpora worked in Rome and thus he was not carried off by the Great Plague of 1656 which decimated the Neapolitan population and, with it, numerous preeminent artists such as Massimo Stanzione and Bernardo Cavallino. The present composition and its distinctive technique, the feathery rendering of individual blossoms of various species, seem attributable to a hand very close to that of Porpora himself. 1617-1673

Condition Report: The original canvas has been unevenly trimmed to eliminate its tacking edges and the minimal but irregular margins (the compensation provided by the lining canvas) have been toned to match the dark coloration of the background of the original painting. The overall condition is good though the old, discolored varnish obviously obscures the radiance of the artist's palette. Despite damage, with numerous losses, the very fine, old frame retains much of its original gilding. Due to the age of this item, please see detail photos or inspect in person

After Luca Forte, Still Life of Fruit & Game

Lot 291: After Luca Forte, Still Life of Fruit & Game

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: After Luca Forte painting, still life of fruit and game. Notwithstanding the great quantity of works ascribed to Luca Forte, there is scarcely any documentary evidence of his life and career. The artist's reputation was based mainly on his lush depiction of fully ripened fruits and vegetables, executed in a painterly but broad and generalized technique and vibrant palette which made his paintings the perfect decoration for Neapolitan interiors of all kinds and social strata (whether the dining rooms of palaces or ristoranti). The present example would seem to be a fine, old copy after Forte but no prototype has been identified. It is relatively easy to see, even with the naked eye, that the composition was painted over another which featured a bird with spread wings (a duck, or a goose?). The very fine, period frame with intact silver "gilding" is of exceptional quality and merits attention as a work of art in its own right. 1600/05-before 1670
