The owners were Pere Romeau, Santiago Rusiñol and Miguel Utrillo (Romeau's and Utrillo's names are written on the reverse of this work). Popular with artists and writers, El Quatre Gats hosted one of the first one-man shows of Pablo Picasso. Despite its notoriety, the bar was forced to close in 1903 due to outstanding debt. Fortunately, a group of restaurant investors took steps to revive the historic business, and in 1989 Els Quátre Gats reopened as a fine dining restaurant. This image is used at the cover of their menu.
