Staffordshire “Holyrood House, Edinburgh” Pair of Dinner Plates, Ca. 1840

Ships From: Great Barrington, MA US

Description: A good medium blue pair of early 19th century Staffordshire transfer-ware plates with the impressed mark of Enoch Wood & Sons, Burslem. Marked on the back is the name of the view, Holyrood House in Edinburgh. Also known as Holyrood Palace its early construction was built on the grounds of Holyrood Abbey which was built in the 12th century and the entire estate has long been the residence of the British Crown in Scotland. In the 16th century a Gothic palace was added next to the Abbey which appears as an attachment to a much larger palace which was constructed in the late 17th century. I had difficulty with showing an accurate color tone. The whites are much whiter and the blues are more towards a slightly darker bluish-black hue.

Condition Report: Very good + antique condition. There are small shallow scattered glaze scratches which are barely noticeable without close inspection. These do not take away from the bright and clean appearance

Rare Antique Pair of Chinese Export Porcelain Tea Caddies, Ca. 1720

Ships From: Great Barrington, MA US

Description: I have never seen a pair of early Chinese Export Porcelain tea caddies before. The bodies are rectangular in form with canted corners. The sides are flute molded. The colors may indicate these were made for the Dutch or North West European market and lending credibility to the intended marked are the labels on the bases from a Rotterdam antiques/art dealer active in the 1920s. Shall I dare to describe these using a favorite term from early issues of The Magazine Antiques, “Exceedingly Rare”.

Condition Report: Excellent except for light rubbing to the gold. No repairs, chips or cracks just light fritting.

Fancy Inlaid Vega Tubaphone Style 5 String Banjo

Ships From: Great Barrington, MA US

Description: This is a late 1970’s early 1980’s copy of a Vega or Fairbanks high grade model. This was evidently produced in So. Korea shortly after C.F. Martin sold their rights to the Vega name. Though produced in Korea it was marketed in the US before Deering bought the name and brought production back to the US. It sports many Vegaphone Artist and Tubaphone #7 attributes without any neck carving. It is a good solid heavy banjo that is good for Bluegrass and Old Time styles. I have removed the resonator and the flange for Old Time but they are easily re-installed. The rim and neck are maple with a medium mahogany stain, ebony overlays on the peg head and heel cap. The fretboard is ebony or a stained hardwood with barely a trace of any wear on the frets. It has a “tubaphone” tone ring. Geared pegs with pearloid buttons. It has a good bright tone and is loud. It comes with the hard shell case pictured, two wrenches and an extra bridge.

Condition Report: Excellent nearly new condition with only slight blemishes. The neck is straight.

New England Federal Period Tall Case Clock

Ships From: Great Barrington, MA US

Description: A very attractive light amber inlaid wavy birch New England tall clock probably made in the Concord New Hampshire region. The movement is an eight day time and strike (on the hour) with moon phases dial and date of the month window. The back of the moon phase dial is stamped “Wilson Birk” on the back. This is a typical high style country version of what is referred to as a “Roxbury Case” as stylistically it is like the tall case clock cases that were made in and around Roxbury, Massachusetts, now a suburb of Boston. The case has inset reeded quarter columns with brass capitals and bases. The hood has full round reeded free standing columns with brass capitals and bases. Both the waist door and the base have inlaid oval crotch birch inlays with dark and light string inlay. Indicative of the Concord, NH region is the pattern of the pierced bonnet crest, the use of the moon phase dial and birch as a primary wood.

Condition Report: Excellent. The date dial has been touched up, the seat board for the movement is replaced. The cutout applied base moldings, while correct stylistically, are not original. Due to typical shrinkage a narrow vertical strip has been let into the base.

Rare American Federal Period Brass Fire Place Set

Ships From: Great Barrington, MA US

Description: Yes this set is rare as hen’s teeth, specifically because of the extraordinary screen which will be the focal point of your fireplace. This is only the second period screen I have personally seen in over 35 years that has acorn finials. Though scarce, the more common type of finial on American screens are the slightly later ball finials. Most period American screens do not have finials. This set must have been made for an unusually well furnished home on a grand scale for the 1810-25 era as the screen is 60? long. The andirons are 20? tall and 20.5? deep. The screen is also 20? tall. The form of the legs point to a New York origin.

Large Pair of French Bronze Dragon Motif Curtain Tie Backs by Dromard

Ships From: Great Barrington, MA US

Description: A substantial pair of elaborate curtain tie back holders (they lack the small brackets to hold them to the wall) made by or for the French Cabinet Maker L.Dromard of Paris. These undoubtedly date from the late 19th/early 20th century They retain a greenish brown old patina.

Condition Report: Excellent. One back plate has been repaired in two places. One area below the urn and another at the neck of the finial. These repairs are solid and cannot be seen when the curtains are in place. Also they are not readily noticeable on casual viewing. The losses indicated are the lack of accompanying separate wall mounted clips to hold them in place. Mounting brackets could be made or simply drilling small holes into the back plates will allow small screws to mount these directly to the walls.

Antique Cast Iron and Brass Franklin Fireplace

Ships From: Great Barrington, MA US

Description: A fine example of the rising tide of American industry that swept New York State as a manufacturing power house. This example is identified in the top plate as made by “N. Thompson – New York”. Millions of cast fireplaces and stoves were produced in New York in the 19th century for use all over the US. Also known as “Franklin’s Pennsylvania Fireplace” for its inventor and American founding father, Benjamin Franklin, who designed his idea in 1740. Sadly most of these old stoves were scrapped or hauled to dumps as modern central heat became the standard and finally coal and wood as a home fuel declined.

Condition Report: Overall in good condition. This is still usable but should have the loose cement removed from the joints and re-sealed. One rear foot is replaced with a nut and bolt with an old repair to the edge (see photo) by the foot. The rear smoke exhaust sleeve is a bit dinged up but appears to be sound. Included is a pair of cast iron andirons. I don't know what the use is for but included is a plate to close off the rear hot air chamber at the top.

Acme Professional Banjo by S. S. Stewart Ca. 1895

Ships From: Great Barrington, MA US

Description: A beautiful creation by the prolific S.S. Stewart Company under its Acme brand. It sports a tree of life inlay on the fretboard and peg head of abalone and pewter. Appears to have all its original hardware except for one bracket hook nut. The usual metal clad rim. Now with a plastic head which works well but doesn’t have a high enough crown so the tension ring is a bit high nearer the tail piece.

Condition Report: Generally in good + condition. Plays well except the last three frets aren't high enough to keep the strings from hitting the top of the rim. The neck is very good but slightly winded and does not appear to be refinished. The fret board does have a few small chips and modest finger nail wear at the 1st two frets. The frets are low but still very playable. Some of the plating is worn through.

Pair 17th Century Style Sterling Candlesticks

Ships From: Great Barrington, MA US

Description: This pair of Sterling sticks were manufactured by Tuttle Silversmiths of Boston, a company associated with copies of antique silver designs. This pair indicates it is in the Gov. Winslow pattern named for Governor Edward Wislow of the Early Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts founded by the Mayflower Pilgrims. While these do have weighted bases the gauge of the silver is unusually heavy. Tuttle used the peculiar method of dating their silver by using the initials of the sitting US President at the time of manufacture. These are marked JFK.
