Description: A lot of 4 ancient oil lamps. The first a Hellenistic 'Pocketwatch' type lamp, 3rd-1st Century BC, with a pierced knob, some remaining slip, and sitting on a ring base, L: 2 3/4 in (6.9cm), D: 2 1/8 in (5.5cm). The second a Syrio-Palestine type lamp, c. 4th-5th Century AD with raised lines around the fill hole, L: 3 2/5 in (8.7cm), D: 2 1/8 in (5.5cm). The third is a flat Greek lamp, c. 2nd Century BC, with a floral motif around the fill hole, a nozzle with a flat base, bordered by volutes, and a small loop handle since filled in with dirt, L: 3 7/8 in (9.8cm), D: 2 2/5 in (6.2cm). Reads in Ink on Body 'William Benton - with Friendship - Oved Ben-Ami May 5, 1970 1500 BC'. Oved Ben-Ami was First Mayor of the City of Netanya in Israel, the City Which He Founded in 1928-29. He Also Founded the Village of Even Yehuda and the Port City Ashdod. He Also Founded the Diamond Industry in Israel. William Benton was a US Senator Who Visited Netanya w/ Hubert Humphrey. The fourth is a Syrio-Palestinian type lamp, c. 5th-7th Century AD, with faded decoration around the fill hole, L: 4 in (10.2cm), D: 2 1/8 in (5.5cm). The first: Ex Dutch Private Collection; the second: Ex English Private Collection; the third: Property from the Collection of Marjorie and Charles Benton, Evanston, Illinois; the fourth: Ex Chicago Private Collection.
