Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Framed behind glass.Gu Gan, born in 1942 in Changsha and today living in Beijing, is a leading figure in the group of calligraphers, who have been developing a modern style of calligraphy, 'xiandai hua', and became known through their exhibition in the National Museum of Art, Beijing in 1985. Inspired by the work of artists such as Kandinsky, Klee, Picasso, Mondrian and Miró, Gu concluded that, in calligraphy, the expression of subjective feelings and individual design principles should hold precedence over classical rules which grant the the legibility of texts, such as the fixed direction and sequence of writing. In addition to this came the use of archaic characters, the deformation of individual characters and the use of colour to alienate aspects of the calligraphy, all in all giving it theair of an abstract composition. The boarders between painting and calligraphy became blurred. However two essential requirements of Chinese writing aesthetics remained; the tension between movement and tranquility and between substance and space. In 1987 and 1992/1993 Gu Gan went to Bonn and Hamburg for study trips and was sponsored by the Heinrich Böll Foundatin, Cologne. He held solo-exhibitions in London (1998), New York (2002, 2004, 2006) and group exhibitions, amongst others, in the Museum of East Asian Art, Cologne (1992) and the British Museum (1997). In addition to these two museums his work can also be found today in the National Fine Art Museum, Beijing and in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. Ca. 103 cm²/ ca. 115 x 117cm (whole sheet), ca. 130,5 cm² ( frame)

Ink on paper, backed. Inscribed and signed: '1992 ...Gu Gan...artificial meaning'. Sealed: 'Gu Gan'.The painting was Gu Gan's contribution to the international Heinrich-Böll-Symposium held in Cologne, 1992 and the related exhibition in the Museum of East Asian Art. Böll's poem describes how 'these hands' pretend to be innocent but are really marked by the war and the fight for survival. It is an appeal to become conscious of the past in order to regain personal credibility. Ca. 103 cm² (picture)
