Provenance: the inscription records the gift of the album by the artist's son, G.N. Cave, being either Gerald (1850-?) or George (1855-1948), to his niece, the artist's granddaughter, in 1934, and thence by descent to the present owners. ***George Noble Cave was born in Bristol in 1824, and was known to be a serving officer with the Bengal Staff Corp from 1849 when he married his first wife, Matilda Chambers, with whom he had five children. He was promoted from captain to major in 1861, and then to Lieutenant Colonel at the end of 1867, around the time he commenced this series of exquisite watercolours. He married again, to Jane Wheatley, in 1871, with whom he had a sixth child. He later retired as colonel to Ealing in Greater London, where he died in 1908..
