It was made with black ink and gouache on paper and the title reads 'Wedding in Vienna'. The piece is a quite early work and belongs to Mlenek's series of 'Skin-Drawings'. It shows the surreal setting of a wedding held in the open air. In the middle part of the drawing, two giant skins of a male and a female naked body are hung on horizontal bars and stretched into the depth. Underneath, the bridal pair seems to be depicted on a postcard that was simply pinned onto the lower margin. Behind, we can presumably see a flat landscape of Vienna with houses and bare mounds and a pale grey sky that takes up most of the background space. Finally, a group of three nuns and three priests is placed on some clouds at the upper part of the picture, watching the scene from above. The present drawing, as well as the matching wooden frame, are in a very good condition with only small traces of age and use. The frame measures 104 cm in height and 74 cm in width. The dimensions of the paper are 100 x 70 cm. The work has not yet been signed by the artist, however Hannes Mlenek has committed to sign his work for the high bidder. Hannes Mlenek (*1949) The artist Hannes Mlenek started his artistic training in 1970, at the age of 21, attending the class of Adolf Frohner at the University of Applied Arts Vienna as a guest. Whereas his early work was characterised by a clear figurative style, Mlenek has developed a rather abstract pictorial language by now. His large-scaled paintings often show gestural, dynamic sketches that are combined with white and greyish colours. The human body and its movements are however still the starting point of all his artistic expressions. Hannes Mlenek's painting have been exhibited all over the world and numerous galleries presented him at international art fairs, such as the Art Basel or the FIAC in Paris. His works also belong to important museum collections; e.g. at the Albertina in Vienna, the Vienna Museum of Modern Art or the private foundation 'Sammlung Essl'.

At first glance, the composition in black and white seems completely abstract. But gradually it reveals itself to the viewer and a forest in the snow takes shape. Roda takes the motifs of his paintings from nature, but the Luxembourger is not a landscape painter in the traditional sense. The painting by Fernand Roda is in good condition with light signs of use. The black areas show fine craquelure here and there. The work is signed and dated lower right 'Roda 07'. The stretcher frame measures 80 x 110 cm. Fernand Roda (b. 1951) Fernand Roda was born in Luxembourg in 1951. His 'nature images', which he conceives in series, occupy a liminal space between abstraction and figuration. Today Fernand Roda lives and works in Dusseldorf.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on hardboard Dominican Republic, 20th Century José Vela Zanetti (1913-1999) - Spanish painter Signed lower right 'Vela Zanetti' Overall dimensions : 113 x 87.5 cm Good condition Provenance: German private collection in Santo Domingo The powerful peasant portraits of Zanetti are among the most renowned paintings of the artist; the highest hammer price for a painting of the artist on the international auction market is set at 80,000 Euros In this painting, José Vela Zanetti (1913-1999) has chosen one of his typical motifs - the peasant. Zanetti's portraits are character studies that reflect the rural life in Castile, Zanetti's home, in an impressive way. The distinct and dynamic brushstrokes are a parameter of content in this work, corresponding with the sturdy appearance of the farmer. The particular depiction allows the viewer to approach very close to the farmer - so close, that the farmer's expressive face and his powerful hands, grasping through the fine grain, are shown to their best advantage. The reduced portrait of the sower corresponds with the flat background. In this painting, Zanetti has not aimed for a faithful reproduction of the image motif, but for the expression of its symbolic content. The painting of José Vela Zanetti is signed lower right 'Vela Zanetti'. The condition is good with slight signs of age and wear. The wooden shows some minor blemishes to the edges. The varnished colour surface shows a few long scratches at a closer viewing. The painting was cleaned, retouched and re-framed in 2013. Under UV-light are visible numerous touch-ups, especially at the right hand of the farmer. The overall dimensions, framed, are 113 x 87.5 cm. José Vela Zanetti (1913-1999) José Vela Zanetti is one of the most meaningful Spanish artists of the 20th Century. A native of Burgos in northern Spain, Zanetti is also known as representative of 'Muralismo' - a special type of wall painting. He completed his art studies in Madrid with his teacher, José Ramon Zaragoza. An educational journey brought him to Italy in 1933. The Spanish Civil War, which broke out in 1936, was to mark him in a cruel manner, because his father was executed because of his socialist political views. In 1939, this event brought Zanetti into exile to the Dominican Republic. There, his great success as a painter and 'muralist' started. He received over 100 commissions for wall paintings from public institutions such as libraries, government buildings and banks. Since 1945, Zanetti also worked as a lecturer at the National Art Academy in Santo Domingo, whose director he became in 1949. With a Guggenheim fellowship in 1951, he spent several years in New York City in the 1950s, where Zanetti's international career began. Also his most well-known work for the UN-headquarters: a wall painting with the title 'The struggle of humanity for a long-lasting peace' (La Lucha del Hombre por la Paz) was created in New York. Zanetti spent the end of his life in his birthplace Milagros in the province of Burgos. His later oeuvre shows a mixture of portraits, still lives, landscapes and religious themes.

In this character study, Zanetti gives evidence of being a talented portraitist, whose artistic technique becomes a parameter of content. This work testifies Zanetti's work as a muralist, as the painting seems more like a fresco in sepia than an oil portrait of modernity. Zanetti has painted this work when he was already living in exile in the Dominican Republic and successful in the activity of wall painting ('muralismo'). With the help of light and shadow effects, Zanetti succeeded in creating a realistic character study of remarkable timelessness. The painting is signed lower right 'Vela Zanetti'. Lot 30: Christian Ludwig Attersee, Serigraph 'Freundin Honolully', 1973

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Colour Serigraph Austria, 1973 Christian Ludwig Attersee (born 1940) - Viennese Pop Art artist, stage designer, musician and author Numbered, signed and dated 'XXVII/LX Attersee 73' lower right Overall dimensions, framed: 72 x 52 cm; paper size: 70 x 50 cm (height x width) Catalogue raisonné: Attersee 32 Very good condition Provenance: Viennese private collection Attersee is one of the most versatile Austrian contemporary artists and he is regarded as one of the co-founders of the European Pop Art The present serigraph with the bizarre title 'Freundin Honolully' (= 'Girlfriend Honolully') dates back to 1973 and was made by Christian Ludwig Attersee, one of the most versatile Austrian contemporary artists. His artistic work is characterised by subtle irony, a figural-symbolic style and a very special play on words that is reflected in the unusual titles. Attersee's motival and thematic source of inspiration is the consumer industry with its lush colours and exaggerated, partially tasteless images. The artist however does not only quote these impressions in his works, as we can always detect his critical, questioning eye. 'Freundin Honolully' reflects all the mentioned aspects that characterise the artist's style. We can see a buxom young woman in bright colours, sitting lascively on a green flower field and accompanied by a cute rabbit and a fawn. A closer look at the particular area between her legs however shows that the girl has a penis that is pierced by a gold ring. Furthermore, there are two cherrys growing out of her boobs, each of them also pierced by a gold ring. Since his individual personality did not conform to the socialist ideas of the GDR, he was soon expelled and continued his studies in West Berlin, where he studied the theories of Kandinsky, Malevich and Nay and became interested in the art of the 'mentally ill'. In 1961 he adopted the pseudonym Georg Baselitz. In 1970 the first exhibition with exclusively 'inverted' paintings took place in a gallery in Cologne. With his frequently provocative works Baselitz played significant role in shaping modern painting. In 1977 he accepted a professorship at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, in the 80s and 90s he taught at the University of Arts in Berlin. His works are in the collection of the Guggenheim Museum and MoMA in New York, the Tate Gallery in London, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Berlinische Galerie as well as the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin.

(hors de commerce) Catalogue raisonné number: Vallier 99 Publisher: Maeght, Paris Framed in mat Dimensions, framed: 66 x 56,5 cm, dimensions plate: 34 x 36.5 cm Good condition Provenance: From a Berlin private collection A beautiful graphic work by a pioneer of modernism; comparable etchings fetch up to 5,000 euros at international auctions The colour etching 'Le Lierre' [The Ivy] by Georges Braque shows a bouquet of ivy leaves in a vase. The motif is typical of Braque's work from the 1950s. The slightly abstracted forms and the dissolved perspective also characterise his other still lifes from this period. This is one of Braque's largest etchings and it stands out due to the refined grain of the background, which was achieved by using multiple plates. The etching was not created for commercial use ('H.C.' - hors de commere). The etching is in good condition. The vellum is a little browned and discoloured above the plate, where the mat is laid down. It is signed in pencil lower right 'G Braque' and inscribed lower left 'H.C.' [hors de commerce]. On the back it is titled 'Le Lierre'. Framed the work measures 66 x 56.5 cm. The sheet measures 56.3 x 45 cm, the plate measures 34 x 36.5 cm. Georges Braque (1882-1963) Georges Braque was born in Argenteuil, a suburb of Paris, in 1882. He began with his studies as an artist in Paris in 1900. At the beginning of his career, the artist was very much influenced by the Salon d'Automne, the young French Fauvists. At the same time, Braque studied the much reduced, architectural works of Cézanne. In 1907, Georges Braque met Pablo Picasso. The two artists started workin together very closely. In 1909 an art critic described Braque's works as 'cubist grotesques' and the term Cubism was coined. Two years later, Braque was seriously wounded in the First World War. After the war, he increasingly painted still lifes with a main focus on the effect of colour.

Broder, Paris Overall dimensions, framed: 60.5 x 48 cm Very good condition Provenance: German private collection (bought in 1980, Hachmeister and Schnake, Germany) The wood cut belongs to a series of 18 prints referring to the poem 'Si je mourais là-bas' by Guillaume Apollinaire; colour wood cuts from this series by Georges Braque fetch up to 50.000 Euros at international auctions The present colour wood cut was made by Georges Braque in 1962 and is titled 'Fleurs bleues'. In the centre, we can see the blossoms of two violets that were depicted with beautiful rationality. Underneath, the artist arranged some fallen petals in a fine row. Braque chose a strong blue colour for his print that forms a bright clear contrast with the white underground that consists of Japon nacre paper, the very characteristic of this special edition. Birds always played a central role in Braque's artistic life and caused him to many different interpretations. Only when we take a closer look at the print, we can see the motif of a small abstract bird that is formed of four petals, underneath the blossoms. Our colour wood cut belongs to a series of 18 wood cuts that Braque created as a complement to the poem 'Si je mourais là-bas' by Guillaume Apollinaire (1880-1918), the great French poet and art critic. The colour wood cut is in a very good condition with only minimal traces of age. It is signed 'G Braque' with pencil lower right and numbered '32/40' lower left. The sheet is mounted on cardboard. The wooden frame in silver and blue shows some age-related signs of wear. The frame measures 60.5 x 48 cm, the sheet 46.5 x 36.5 cm and the image has a size of 13.5 x 20 cm. Description: Silkscreen on wove paper with relief Spain, 1988 Eduardo Chillida (1924-2002) - Spanish sculptor and draughtsman Monogrammed in center Dimensions: 46 x 36.5 cm Very good condition Provenance: Spanish private collection This monochrome silkscreen of reduced aesthetics is characteristic for the Spanish artist; similar works by Eduardo Chillida fetch up to 10,000 Euros at international auctions This monochrome silkscreen by the Basque artist Eduardo Chillida impresses with its minimalism. A combination of straight and curved lines gives shape to a homogenous surface. Like with many of his works the artist here too explores the theme of space and its measurement. The dark planes in stark contrast with the white background illustrate the opposing concepts of black and white, fullness and void. The embossment reinforces this visual contrast in relief. The monogram of the artist is located in the centre of the print. The work is in very good condition with light traces of age. The paper is lightly discoloured due to its age. The sheet measures 46 x 36.5 cm. Eduardo Chillida Eduardo Chillida was born in 1924 in San Sebastián. At 19 he moved to Madrid to study architecture at the university. Afterwards he attended the private art academy "Círculo de Bellas Artes" and moved to Paris in 1948 where he started working with iron. Three years later he moved back to his home country and soon established himself become an internationally renowned sculptor and illustrator. Over the decades he took part in many exhibitions, including the prestigious "documenta" in Kassel. In his works, both sculptural and graphic, the artist deals with ideas of space and its limits. In 1958 he was awarded the Grand Prix of sculpture at the Venice Biennale. More awards followed and by the 1980s many esteemed museums such as the Guggenheim in New York dedicated retrospectives to the Spanish artist.

Lot 37: Mohamed Drissi (1946-2003), Unique Stencil Print „Portrait"

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Manual stencil print on cardboard Morocco, around 2000 Mohamed Drissi (1946-2003) - Moroccan painter and sculptor Signed lower right "Drissi (...)" In black passe-partout Dimensions, in passé-partout: 30 x 40 cm Very good condition Provenance: Berlin private collection of Contemporary Art Mohamed Drissi counts among the most valued Moroccan artists; his works fetch up to 90.000 Euros at auction. This artwork by the Moroccan artist Mohamed Drissi convinces with its expressive use of the colours red and black. A highly stylized male head defined with a linear pattern reminds of a traditional African mask. The linear pattern is extended into the depiction of the hair, which are single streaks that appear to stick out of the male's head. The expression of the image is somewhere between frightening and amusing as the large round eyes in black and red give the figure a hint of something diabolical. The work is in very good condition. It is signed in the lower right hand corner. The black mat measures 30 x 40 cm and the sheet measures 23.5 x 28 cm. Mohamed Drissi (1946-2003) Mohamed Drissi was born in the Moroccan city of Tétouan in 1946 and is considered one of the most original painters of his generation. He studied art in Tétouan, Paris, Barcelona, Brussels and New York. His favourite subject matter was the 'human being' and especially the taboo topic of prostitution. In this context, Drissi painted a colourful variety of abstract-expressive paintings of mostly androgynous women's bodies and mask-like heads. However, the faces of Drissi's figures reflect the full range of human emotions, which are enhanced by the postures and gestures. The expressive power in Drissi's works are reminiscent of the great German Expressionists such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Otto Mueller. The works of Egon Schiele and Edward Munch are also brought to mind. Drissi's works fetch record prices at international auctions. The Gallery Mohamed Drissi in Tangier, a contemporary art museum, presents some of his works.

Lot 38: Rainer Fetting (b. 1949), Colour Silkscreen 'The Kiss', 1990

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Colour silkscreen on paper Germany, 1990 Rainer Fetting (b. 1949) - German painter and sculptor Signed, dated and numbered lower right 'Fetting 90' and '21/60' Image size: 68.5 x 87 cm Good condition Provenance: German private collection, Berlin Comparable works by Rainer Fetting reach up to 2,500 at international auctions This colour silkscreen was created in 1990 by the German painter and sculptor Rainer Fetting (born 1949). The dominating colours of the abstracted composition are ochre and purple. Two faces that are kissing emerge from broad brushstrokes. The artist was a member of the provocative art group Junge Wilde in Berlin in the eighties, and still today his broad expressive brushstrokes affirm the fast, gestic painting that he and his peers employed. The colour silkscreen is signed on the lower right in pencil 'Fetting 90', and numbered '21/60'. The condition of the work is good, besides age-related signs of wear, like lacerations in the margin, yellowed edges, creased paper, and watermarks in the lower right corner. A piece of ca. 2 cm size is missing in the lower right corner. The image size is 68.5 x 87 cm, and the paper is 75 x 95.5 cm large. Rainer Fetting (b. 1949) Rainer Fetting first completed an apprenticeship as carpenter and stage designer, before he began studying at the Berlin University of the Arts. He opened the Galerie am Moritzplatz together with a group of Berlin artists, which later also formed the artist movement Junge Wilde. In his early active period, he concentrated on cityscapes and the Berlin wall as a subject. A DAAD scholarship enabled a study trip to New York in 1978. Later, he began incorporating pieces of wood into his images, and to work in bronze. A great example of this is the Willy Brandt statue for the SPD headquarters in Bonn, today located in Berlin.

Lot 39: Ernst Fuchs (b. 1930), Lithograph 'Fall of Man', 1980s

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Colour lithograph on handmade 'BFK-RIVES' paper Vienna, Austria, mid-20th century Ernst Fuchs (b. 1930) - Austrian painter, graphic artist, sculptor and architect Signed 'Ernst Fuchs' lower right and numbered '22/120' lower left in pencil Overall dimensions, framed: 71 x 61 cm Very good condition Provenance: German private collection A typical subject of the artist, who, as a co-founder of the 'Vienna School of Fantastic Realism', often dealt with mystic-religious themes; colour lithographs by Ernst Fuchs fetch up to 12,000 Euros at international auctions This colour lithograph by the Austrian artist Ernst Fuchs (born 1930) shows a central, Old Testamentary scene of the Genesis: the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Equipped with a large crown above Adam and Eve, the 'archetypal couple', the tree rises high into the paradise sky, covering almost the entire foreground space. Adam's lower body seems to be grown together with the tree trunk, while Eve stands freely to his right, pressing her bare pale body against his side. With her right hand, she holds the forbidden apple above Adam's head, as if she has just picked the ripe fruit, in order to eat it. Adam however braces his left arm with all his strength against the tree's branches, while he holds Eve's right hand with his left. We can see the snake, the seductress of the 'Fall of Man', only when we take a closer look at the right side of the darkly shaded tree trunk. The landscape in the background of the scene appears rather bare and dull, calling the end of Paradise. The present colour lithograph is a high-quality, perfectly hand-crafted piece. The artist has played with different grades of shades and regarding the fine colouring of the scene, he proves great skills, too. Ernst Fuchs was one of the co-founders of the 'Vienna School of Fantastic Realism' and often dealt with mystic-religious themes. Accordingly, the artist depicted the subject of the Eve in Paradise in numerous different ways. The colour lithograph is in a very good overall condition with only small age-related traces. The artist has signed his work 'Ernst Fuchs' with pencil at the lower right. At the opposite side, it is numbered '22/120'. The 'BFK-RIVES' paper is a bit faded at the margins of the covering mat. It measurs 65 x 50 cm. The image of the depicted scene measures 48.5 x 41.5 cm. The frame is well-preserved and measures 71 x 61 cm. Ernst Fuchs (born 1930) Already as a pupil, Ernst Fuchs obtained instruction in painting and sculpting from his parents' friends and began his studies at the age of 15 at the Viennese Akademie der Bildenden Künste under Albert Paris von Güterloh. Between 1950 and 1962 Fuchs travelled a lot and exhibited in various countries, until he returned to Vienna in 1962 as a professor. There he grew to be one of the main representatives of theVienna School of Fantastic Realism, whose founder was his teacher, von Gütersloh. Even though it was inspired by Surrealism, Phantastical Realism orientated itself more and more towards the technical perfection of the Old Masters and is less abstract than Surrealism. Fuchs mainly completed works with mystical-religious themes. Apart from his graphic works, Fuchs worked as a stage designer, costume designer, singer and architect. His buildings are characterised by ornaments and colours, and can still be admired today. The Otto-Wagner-Villa built by Fuchs himself is today the Ernst-Fuchs-Museum.

Description: Lithographic limestone plate Germany or Switzerland, 1959 Oskar Kokoschka (1886-1980) - Austrian Painter Monogrammed and dated 'OK 1959' Marked by different hand 'Umdruck Noch nicht gebraucht Juni 59 Li' (= Transfer print not yet used June 59 Li) Dimensions: 70 x 50 x 7 cm Good condition Provenance: German private collection A very unusual piece from the print workshop; while Oskar Kokoschka's lithographs fetch up to 15,000 Euros on the international auction market, the corresponding lithographic stones are rarely on offer The stone shows a lithograph after a drawing by Oskar Kokoschka. Using the technique of transfer printing, the artist draws on transfer print paper, which is transformed on to the stone. The stone serves as a printing plate for the lithograph print. Thus it is a mirror-inverted representation of the drawing on the stone. The lithograph "The Painter and his Model" shows the expressive painting style of Kokoschka. Kokoschka visualizes his subjective perception of the atmosphere in the artist's studio in the drawing. The artist's expressive painting style combined with a complex character result in powerful and often psychic atmospheric imagery, making him reach international fame in his lifetime. The limestone print plate, which has been made from chalk shale stone for the technical realization of the lithograph print, is in good, age-appropriate condition with natural staining of the stone. On the sides of the stone plate there are the numbers '290' on top and '93' on the right. The stone is monogrammed and dated 'OK 1959', as well as marked with 'Umdruck Noch nicht gebraucht Juni 59 Li' (= Transfer print not yet used June 59 Li). He moved to Berlin in 1910 where he illustrated the expressionist magazine Der Sturm and had a huge exhibition in Paul Cassirer's gallery. Back in Vienna, he met Alma Mahler, yet when their tumultuous affair ended, Kokoschka voluntarily joined the military service. He got injured and spent the rest of the war as a war painter. He was named professor in Dresden in 1919 and stayed there until 1924. With the beginning of the Nazi regime, Kokoschka had to flee to Prague after he was named „The most degenerated amongst the degenerated" and "Hitler's artistic enemy No. 1". The Oskar Kokoschka Bund was founded in Prague with the aim of contradicting the 'artistic' machinations of the National Socialists and to support Kokoschka. In 1938, Kokoschka fled to England and became a British citizen in 1946 (he only re-accepted the Austrian citizenship in 1975). He founded the Schule des Sehens, an international fine arts summer academy in Salzburg and moved to Switzerland in 1953. Kokoschka participated in the documenta I, II and III and received many honours and awards. Regular exhibitions are held in his birthplace in Pöchlarn. Friedrich Kracht (1925-2007), 'Colour Composition', 1984

Lot 49: Friedrich Kracht (1925-2007), 'Colour Composition', 1984

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Serigraph on paper Friedrich Kracht (1925-2007) - German painter and graphic designer Signed and dated at the lower right corner 'F. Kracht 84' Overall dimensions: 71.5 x 51.5 cm Very good condition Provenance: German private collection The silk-print created in blue, black, a light and a dark grey depicts a composition of geometric shapes which overlap and intertwine but contrast clearly in their contours. Round shapes predominate but they never form a full circle. The print rather shows a vivid interaction of various colours forming a very harmonious ensemble with their colour schemes. The serigraphy corresponds in its shape with Concrete Art. Concrete Art refers to mathematic principles and the attempt to materialize the intellectual. The serigraph is in very good condition with minimal signs of age. The frame shows slight traces of age and usage. The print is signed in pencil 'F. Kracht 84' at the lower right corner. The overall dimensions are 71,5 x 51,5 cm (framed) and 45 x 62 cm (paper). Friedric Kracht (1925-2007) Friedrich Kracht, who was born in Bochum in 1925 was trained as a drafsman at first. Later he started studying Fine Arts in 1947 in Dortmund, continued in Weimar and graduated in Dresden. Since 1953 he lived in Dresden as a freelance artist and mainly focused on graphic design and the art of construction in the shape of murals and walls. One can place his pieces of graphic art, mainly tackling form, colour and geometry, in the field of Concrete Art. Concrete Art The term Concrete Art was introduced in 1924 by Dutch painter and art theorist Theo van Doesburg (1883-1931). He programmatically defined the term in 1930 in a manifesto at the foundation of theArt Concret group as follows: "The piece of art must be conceived and designed as a whole in the mind before it is made. It must not contain any of the formal conditions of nature, the senses or emotions. We want to eliminate Lyricism, drama, symbolism etc. The painting must be constructed solely from malleable elements, meaning from surfaces and colours. The painting's element does not have any meaning other than itself." Concerning form, Concrete Art is therefore an art movement based primarily on mathematical and geometric principles and negates the figurative. Meaning and visual perception of colours and form are the centre of attention. Max Bill, main Swiss representative of Concrete Art, articulates this art movement's goal as: "(...) it puts systems in order and gives this order life with artistic means." (Max Bill in 1949 in his introduction to the catalogue of the Zurich exhibition of Concrete Art).
