Furness Cruises to Bermuda and the West Indies Vintage Travel Poster

Ships From: New York, NY US

Description: ADOLPH TREIDLER (1886-1981) was one of the most influential illustrators and poster designers of the twentieth century, and a highly successful commercial artist whose work for the Bermuda Trade Development Board in the 1930s helped put that island on the map as a popular tourist destination. The noted American artist and architectural historian Andrew Zega called him “arguably the nation’s most outstanding poster artist,” and his illustrations appeared in or graced the covers of many of the nation’s most prominent magazines of the previous century, including McClure’s (where his work first appeared in 1908),Century, Scribner’s, The Saturday Evening Post, Collier’s, Woman’s Home Companion, and Harper’s. (By the time of his death in 1981, he had produced over 200 covers for the aforementioned periodicals.) Besides the Bermuda Trade Development Board and his work promoting the American government’s efforts during both World Wars, his commercial accounts were many and varied, including Pierce-Arrow Automobiles, Chesterfield Cigarettes, Furness Cruises, New York Central Lines, The French Line, Spear and Company Patrician Caps, A &P Supermarkets, Wells Fargo, Pan-American Airways, and Irish Airlines. It has been said of him that he was “surprisingly versatile when it came to style. The posters dealing with Bermuda would seem to have been done by another artist than the one who did the World War 2 poster. And it might have been a third artist who did the Chesterfield ad art and a fourth who worked for Pierce-Arrow. But of course it was all Treidler.” (Art Contrarian.Blogspot.com, January 28, 2013.) In addition to his posters and illustrations, for which he was primarily known, he also painted seascapes and landscapes, mainly watercolors.

Signed postcard by Willem de Kooning

Ships From: New York, NY US

Description: A dark signature in the upper right corner of a printed color image of the artist standing with his back to the camera, arms akimbo, dressed in his trademark overalls and looking at one of his large, colorful paintings. Along with Jackson Pollock, Arshile Gorky, Mark Rothko, Robert Motherwell, and other painters, de Kooning was a part of the post-war New York School, which also encompassed poetry, namely by the Beat Poets, and music, specifically jazz. De Kooning’s works are also called “Action Paintings” for the manner in which paint was applied through splatters and smears rather than careful brushwork. Our postcard, printed in 1984, depicts one of de Kooning’s later works. In 1950, de Kooning was one of 17 prominent Abstract Expressionists and avant-garde artists to sign an open letter to the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art accusing it of hostility towards “advanced art.” In September 2011, de Kooning’s work was honored with a large-scale retrospective exhibition, de Kooning: A Retrospective 18 September 2011 – 9 January 2012 at MoMA in New York City.

Postcard signed by Francis Bacon

Ships From: New York, NY US

Description: A dark signature in the lower blank margin of a printed color reproduction of his 1967 painting Portrait of Isabel Rawsthorne Standing in a Street in Soho. Francis Bacon came to prominence in the mid-20th century when his bold, austere, graphic, and emotionally raw abstract portraits attracted the attention of the London art world. His subject matter included grotesque heads, as well as popes and other religious subjects. Despite the existentialist outlook on life expressed through his paintings, Bacon always appeared to be a bon vivant, spending much of his middle and later life drinking and ambling in London’s Soho with, among others, Lucian Freud. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher famously identified him as “that man who paints those dreadful pictures”, a description that has done nothing to diminish his place in the Western canon. A major retrospective of Bacon’s work opened on 11 September 2008 at Tate Britain, London. It was billed as the largest retrospective of his work ever mounted, containing around sixty pieces. In January 2009, it travelled on to the Prado Gallery in Madrid, Spain, where it was exhibited until April 2009. Then it travelled on to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Pair of Yoruba ibeji figures

Ships From: New York, NY US

Description: Ibeji figures are traditionally created to commemorate twins in Yoruba culture. With the highest recorded rate of twin births in the world – approximately 45 for every 1,000 births – the Yoruba of southwest Nigeria place great prominence on twin births. According to their beliefs, every person has a double in the heavens. Twins are children who are born along with their heavenly counterpart. The name for twins in Yoruba is ibeji, meaning “born two times”, which is also the name of the divinity that protects them. Considered to possess special powers, twins can bring great fortune to those who properly honor them. The Ibeji figures are often carved with elaborate hairstyles and beaded jewellery to signify their elevated status, with stylistic aesthetics being a product of varying artists (babalawo) and regions. Figures serve as a repository for the soul of the departed, and placed in the care of the mother, who honors them as she would her own children. Ibeji are given great attention and respect, often being oiled and washed in special herbal baths, symbolically rubbed with food, and must occupy a significant place within the household. During festivals or large celebrations, the mother caresses and dances with the figures. The tellurian ibeji provide a connection between the mother and the souls of her twins, hence the necessity to cherish and enshrine the figures, as dishonoring the ibeji can lead to misfortune for the family and their respective society. The diversity, as well as the artistic and emotional value of twin sculptures, sparked an interest of numerous collectors of African art from around the world. Today, these objects are featured in many museum and gallery collections around the world.

Cherry Blossom Rain (1905)

Ships From: New York, NY US

Description: Helen Hyde, printmaker, painter, etcher and illustrator, was born in Lima, New York on April 6, 1868. She spent a privileged and cultured childhood in Oakland, California. Her maternal grandparents had crossed the continent to California in a covered wagon in the Gold Rush of 1850, but her mother Helen returned to the family home in Lima, where she gave birth to Helen. In 1870, she rejoined her family with her infant child in California. Hyde exhibited both nationally and internationally, and even her beloved Japan honored her work with awards. Other awards included the gold medal at the “Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exhibition” in Seattle in 1909 and the bronze medal for woodcut at the Panama-Pacific International Exhibition in 1915. The American Magazine of Art closes its tribute to this artist as follows: “There is a charm about her rendition of children, whether they be Japanese, Chinese, Mexican or American, which gives token to her sympathy with childhood; and with her passing has gone from the world of life of cheerfulness and courage and high purpose which, like a flower of sweet fragrance, has added beauty to life.”

Below the Mark (ca. 1908)

Ships From: New York, NY US

Description: According to the Vanity Fair magazine biography page (here in photocopy form) that would have accompanied the original print, the following biography of Samuel Langhorne Clemens is included under “Men of the Day”: “Samuel Langhorne Clemens, commonly known as Mark Twain, was born in Florida, Missouri, U.S., on the 30th of November, 1835. This date is greatly to his credit, inasmuch as it makes him out to be at least an hundred ; for we have every respect for grey hairs and we wish no man discontinuance. It is further to Mr. Clemens’s credit that in our English, “Who’s Who” he describes himself as an “American novelist and lecturer” – not you will note, a humorist. We need not say that Mr. Clemens has had a career. It is one of those unfortunate careers which everybody knows about. Little boys in the street can tell you that Mark Twain was “once a pilot on the Mississippi.” and that at the age of thirteen he became a printer. At fourteen he became a humorist, and at fifty he left it off, having discovered that it was a bad habit. Since then he has written novels and made speeches. The novels are generally conceded to be “not so dusty.” The speeches are forgotten, but if you take the trouble to dig them out of the newspaper files you will find that in each of them Mr. Clemens manages to accuse himself of theft. “I once stole a bishop’s hat,” he says, amid the plaudits and laughter of the overfed; “I once stole a crowbar”; “I levanted with the ship’s anchor and some gas pipe,” and so forth. This is Mr. Twain’s joke, and it never fails to set the table in a roar. In 1867, Mr. Clemens wrote “The Jumping Frog,” and essay in sheer and dismal solemnity which has captivated four hemispheres. “The Jumping Frog” was notable chiefly for it’s references to “this yere Smiley.” It was the parent of cartloads of American humor dumped on us by the late Chevalier Alden and Mr. Robert Barr. We have suffered accordingly; but it is now all over. Mr. Clemens also write “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” and “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”; and he also wrote “Puddinhead Wilson.” He also write “A Yankee at the Court of King Arthur,” and when he went to the Court or Garden Party of King Edward VII., and said “Howd’y?” to her Majesty the Queen, he is understood to have left this work at home with his bath towel. Which reminds us that last year Mr. Clemens was in our midst. He went to Oxford to see the Pageant, and he went to the Hotel Cecil to dine with the editor of “punch.” The editor of “Punch Brothers, Punch.” You scratch my back ; I’ll scratch yours! Then of course, Mr. Twain went away and the Ascot Gold Cup went a-missing. Oh, dear! oh, dear! Roughly, Mr. Twain is understood to be a nice man, He has white hair, a ferocious, lamby, white moustache, and he wears white dress suits. He is believed to have refused enormous offers of money for stenciling space on these suits. He is a sportsman and dislikes Mrs. Baker Eddy and the King of the Belgians. The people in America who do not happen to love him have to put up with him. The people of England love nobody else – when he happens to be here.”

Wa-Na-Ta, The Charger, Grand Chief of the Sioux

Ships From: New York, NY US

Description: The present image, one of a few to show their subjects ‘full-length’, is of the Sioux paramount chief Wa-Na-Ta. Along with his father, Red Thunder, he fought with great bravery on the British side during the War of 1812. In recognition of his efforts he was subsequently given the rank of Captain in the British Army. A pragmatist, he subsequently allied himself with the United States and remained an important and influential friend and advocate for the U.S. until his death in 1848. He was a signatory to the Treaty of Fort Pierre in 1825, and was instrumental in establishing the territorial boundaries between the Sioux, Chippewas, Sac and Foxes, and Ioways: an agreement that was formalized by the Prairie du Chien treaty. ‘Mr. Keating, in his narrative of the Expedition to the Source of the St. Peter’s [River in 1835]… gives an account of [Wa-Na-Ta’s]… person and apparel … “He was dressed in the full habit of an Indian chief; we have never seen a more dignified person, or a more becoming dress. The most prominent part of his apparel was a splendid cloak or mantle of buffalo skin, dressed so as to be of a fine white color; it was decorated with small tufts of owl’s feathers, and others of various hues…A splendid necklace, formed of about sixty claws of the grizzly bear, imparted a manly character to his whole appearance. His leggings [sic.], jacket, and moccasins, were in the real Dacota [sic.] fashion, being made of white skins, profusely decorated…his moccasins were variegated with the plumage of several birds. In his hair he wore nine sticks, neatly cut and smoothed, and painted with vermilion; these designated the number of gunshot wounds which he had received…We had never seen a nobler face, or a more impressive character, than that of the Dacota chief, as he stood that afternoon…” (McKenney and Hall). A great image from McKenney and Hall’s masterpiece “Indian Tribes of North America”: ‘one of the most distinctive and important books in Americana’ (Reese) and ‘one of the most important [works] ever published on the American Indians’ (Field)’. References: Cf. Bennett p.79; cf. Field 992; cf. Howes M129; cf. Lipperheide Mc 4; cf. Reese American Color Plate Books 24; cf. Sabin 43410a Note: As a whole, the portraits in McKenney and Hall’s ‘Indian Tribes of North America’ (Philadelphia: 1836–1842–1844) are arguably the most important visual record of Native American culture ever published. McKenney aimed to educate the American public about these great warriors and chiefs and to preserve their images for posterity in a series of beautiful exotic portraits. The majority of the images were worked up from pictures in the War Department’s Indian Gallery, and almost all of these paintings were by the artist Charles Bird King. King was employed by the Department to record the Indian delegates who visited Washington D.C., but, unfortunately, most of these priceless paintings were destroyed in the 1865 Smithsonian fire. This left the published work as the only record of what many of the most important Native American leaders looked like.

Chon-Ca-Pe, Chief of the Oto Tribe

Ships From: New York, NY US

Description: The present image is of a chief of the Oto tribe. The Oto Indians were part of the Southern Sioux tribes who lived along the Missouri River near the present-day border of Missouri and Nebraska. They were buffalo-hunters and farmers, and signed two early treaties with the U.S. in 1817 and again in 1825. Chon-Ca-Pe was one of the signatories to the later treaty which was intended to prevent any further interference by the Otos in the trade between Missouri and ‘the Mexican dominions’. The treaty was signed in Washington by an Oto delegation, a delegation of which he was a part. ‘We are to infer from this that he was a man of influence at home: and that he had the confidence of his tribe. It is to the reports of such a one alone that the Indians will listen; and it was the design that he and his comrades should not only witness our numbers and our power, but that the reports that should be made of both … should operate upon the fears of their tribes, and thus render more secure our trade with the Mexican frontier’ (McKenney and Hall). A powerful image from McKenney and Hall’s masterpiece “Indian Tribes of North America”: ‘one of the most distinctive and important books in Americana’ (Reese) and ‘one of the most important [works] ever published on the American Indians’ (Field)’. References: Cf. Bennett p.79; cf. Field 992; cf. Howes M129; cf. Lipperheide Mc 4; cf. Reese American Color Plate Books 24; cf. Red Bermudas

Ships From: New York, NY US

Description: According to the Artist, this work of art was inspired by a pair of the universally famous “Bermuda shorts.” The original painting Red Bermudas is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Sir Howard Hodgkin (b. 1932), considered to be one of Britain’s most important painters and printmakers of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, was born in 1932 in London into a prominent Quaker family whose intellectual lineage includes the father of meteorology and the physician who first described Hodgkin’s disease. His father was a distinguished horticulturalist and his mother studied classics at Oxford, though Hodgkin has said that his parents did not encourage his intention to become an artist, an avocation he felt drawn to since the age of six. Frequently pigeonholed as the last great English artist in the tradition of Constable and Turner, Hodgkin is considered to be far more incendiary than that, an artist whom the writer Stuart Jeffries has noted, “exploded counterintuitively from a British visual culture temperamentally uneasy at depicting sensuality or expressing intellectual thoughts.”

Red Umbrella (1972)

Ships From: New York, NY US

Description: "This is Lewis's first color etching, created by forcing red printing ink into the etched lines, and rolling gray ink onto the stretched (called relief) surface. Lewis's entire edition of impressions may have been sold during the artist's lifetime making it his most popular print. There is also another etching of this image, in which Lewis tried black ink rather than gray on the relief surface. Color experiments such as this confirm that Lewis brought to his printmaking the same exploratory approach he engaged when working in other media." (This is an edited version of the text panel that appeared alongside this print hung at The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts exhibit "Procession: The Art of Norman Lewis," November 13, 2015 - April 03, 2016.) Note: According to latest research (Procession The Art of Norman Lewis, edited by Ruth Fine, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, 2015, p. 204): "Lewis was the middle son of Diana (originally Dinah) Cairnes Lewis and Wilfred N. Lewis, who traveled from their birthplace of St. Kitts through Bermuda in 1906." The book's endnote goes on to state: "Although Lewis told interlocutors that his parents were from Bermuda, records indicate that they were born in St. Kitts. See "Wilfred Lewis" and "Diana Lewis" in 1920 US Federal Census, in Ancestry.com, accessed October 3, 2014, at http://search.ancestry.com. In our opinion, what is clear is that Norman Lewis had a rich cultural heritage including St. Kitts, Bermuda and New York. It is not known whether he traveled back to Bermuda after 1909, but this is certainly a possibility.

Palometas, Iquitos, Peru

Ships From: New York, NY US

Description: This black-and-white “portraiture-style” photo, with its dramatic pose and mysterious prop, forms just one part of a body of work which explores the people of the rainforests of the Amazonian Basin where native communities still follow an ancient vision and adhere to customs and traditions that defy the parameters of our western world view. As a restless spirit and indefatigable traveller, Silva has journeyed down the intricate roads of his country to remote areas, always opting to concentrate on the inhabitants of those unchartered lands giving us a sense of the ungraspable face of the Amazon. Tom Hinson, Curator of Photography at The Cleveland Museum of Art, said of a body of Meinel’s work in 2001, two years before this image was taken: “These are compelling, timeless portraits that rise beyond exoticism and embody the spirituality and cultural richness of Peru’s indigenous people. He transforms them into spiritual and cultural icons.” – clearly these comments are rightly echoed two years later in this work by the artist.

Description: REYNOLDS BEAL was one of those lucky individuals who was financially independent, and was therefore able to pursue his two greatest loves – sailing and painting. He studied directly under William Merritt Chase and Childe Hassam, two of the most talented and influential artists of the American Impressionist group called the “New York Ten” that was formed at the turn of the twentieth century. The socially and politically adept Chase had developed a light, airy and brilliant response to the visual world; and Hassam’s style was very close to the essence of French Impressionism, with its high-keyed pure colour and dissolution of form. Beal absorbed these influences and others, and in a lifetime of traveling, learning, and painting, he produced a large body of work which falls fully into the tradition of the best American Impressionist painting. As one scholar has put it, his art “captures a sense of joy – of leisure-time pursuits enjoyed in the brilliant sunlight.”

H.M.S. St. Jean D’Acre in the Tagus at Lisbon

Ships From: New York, NY US

Description: Named for the great Syrian coastal fortress assaulted and captured by the Royal Navy in 1840, H.M.S. St. Jean D’Acre was originally ordered as a pure sailing ship in 1844 but never begun and cancelled the following year. Re-ordered with auxiliary steam power in February 1851, she was laid down at Devonport that June and launched in March 1853 at a cost of GBP107,561. A large two-decker measured at 3,253 tons, she was 238 feet long with a 55 1/2 foot beam and mounted 101 guns of varying caliber, notably 36-8in. muzzle loaders on her lower deck. Fitted with 600nph. Penn engines, she achieved just over 11 knots on her trials and became a highly regarded ship throughout her career. Initially attached to the ‘Western Squadron’, she then enjoyed the rare distinction of serving with both the Baltic and Black Sea fleets in 1855 during the two quite separate phases of the Crimean War. Her final overseas posting was to the Mediterranean Fleet (1859-61) and this painting depicts her last call when homeward bound in February 1861 under Captain Thompson. Thereafter paid off and laid up in reserve, she was sold to Castle’s ship breakers in 1875.

Description: Graham Foster is a Bermudian painter and sculptor whose native land, and its history, have played a vital role in his work. His paintings generally trend in one of two directions: the first inspired by Bermuda’s fish, flora, fauna, and people, captured in a uniquely surreal style; the other is looser and more expressionistic, influenced by dreams and the subconscious mind. Featuring bold colors and considerable detail, many of his Bermuda-themed paintings are transformed into high-quality lithographic prints, personally signed and titled.

From 1911 to 1913 he completed a series of highly-regarded landscapes and seascapes executed on the island of Bermuda, one of them earning a place at the famous Armory Show of 1913. Description: John Hollis Kaufmann, who, in addition to being the recipient of the Queen's Certificate and Badge of Honor for his rich contributions to Bermuda's artistic and architectural heritage, is consensually acknowledged to be one of the foremost living masters of Bermudian seascapes, and has been cited by noted local artist and art historian Dr. Charles Zuill as "the doyen of present-day Bermudian impressionist landscape painters." Breaking Wave showcases Kaufmann's unique ability to capture the dynamic interaction of waves colliding against a rocky coastline, a complex, intricately-woven variant of the seascape theme that few artists are capable of rendering. Detailing Kaufmann's ability, Bermudian art critic Andrew Trimingham was moved to say: "One can even sense the shimmer of fine salt spray that hangs in the atmosphere over our seashores." This gift of making viewers feel as though they are part of the scene, and perhaps even transporting them to imaginative worlds of their own choosing beyond the limits of the canvas, is quintessential Kaufmann, and has helped to provide the impetus for the ever-increasing amount of serious international attention and consideration his work has attained.

Condition Report: Excellent.

Man with Bicycle & [Queen] of Bermuda

Ships From: New York, NY US

Description: GEORGE DANIELL (1911-2002) was a major figure in twentieth century American photography, his work appearing in several of the country’s most popular magazines of the era, and selected for contemporary representation in many prominent public and private collections, both domestically and abroad. Known primarily for his dramatic black and white photographs of actors, artists, and writers in naturalistic settings, he also produced a compelling body of work culled from his worldwide travels that at times took the form of grittily realistic, mist-imbued profiles of fishermen and dock workers, and at others captured the charm and romanticism of exotic locales, often featuring river and water motifs, and scenes of island life. Following a stroke in 1988, he returned full-time to his first love, painting, and his boldly-hued watercolors produced in his coastal Maine farmhouse have in recent years become a distinctive addition to his oeuvre.

Condition Report: Very good to excellent, minor bumping to corners (in margin).

In the background, a larger vessel can be viewed entering the harbour. British flags unfurled in the breeze can be seen on the schooner and spotted in the distant skyline above Fort Fincastle, Government House, and Fort Charlotte. Behind Hog Island (now Paradise Island) lie the ships' masts and buildings of the city of Nassau. Description: Ushio Shinohara, born in Tokyo in 1932, is a painter, sculptor, and performance artist who has pushed the boundaries of the art world in both his native country and in New York for several decades. In 1960 he co-founded the Neo-Dadaism Organizers Group, one of the most avant-garde collectives of the post-war era. He is also known to be one of the few Asian artists who has spent time painting on the island of Bermuda, establishing a studio there and composing many luminous, colorful works of expressive art such as Hamilton Port, Bermuda (1994). Portrait of a Bahamian Boy

Description: ARMIN BUCHTERKIRCH (1859 - 1919?) was an American Impressionist painter and illustrator, known primarily for his highly-regarded watercolours of the American south and the Caribbean, particularly the Bahamas. Many significant details about his personal history remain shrouded in mystery, most notably the date of his death and the extent of his travels. The art historical record shows inconclusive proof regarding whether or not Buchterkirch visited Bermuda over the course of his career. And, as new facts on this Artist surface, there remains the intriguing possibility that heretofore unknown Bermuda-related Works of Art from his oeuvre may someday surface in the public marketplace. From 1882 to 1902, a period encompassing a considerable portion of his career, Buchterkirch exhibited his work at the Rochester Art Club, of which he was a key member. Today, examples of his work can be found in the permanent collections of several major museums, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. and the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, as well as a growing number of prominent private collections. The value of his work continues to escalate with the passage of time: at a recent auction held at Christie’s of London, his watercolor Nassau, Bahamas sold for nearly eight (8) times the previously estimated high price.

Bermuda Coastal Scene - probably looking out towards Boaz Island, Somerset

Ships From: New York, NY US

Description: DODGE MACKNIGHT (1860-1950) was an American painter who forged a reputation in Boston art circles at the turn of the twentieth century as arguably America’s first modernist and, alongside contemporaries John Singer Sargent and Winslow Homer, one of the foremost watercolorists of his day. Through his work he held out a mirror that personally expressed “the scenic wonders of the world,” and “the solid and eternal base of continual communion with nature.” While many reviewers were shocked by the vividly-colored landscapes of his post-Impressionist palette, other, more progressively-minded critics greatly admired his intense hues and lively brushwork, as did widely-respected artists such as Philip Hale and Harvard University Professor of Art Denman Ross. His patrons came to include a host of Boston’s most prominent private and public collectors of the era.

Today, Jamaica’s latitude and longitude are measured from the fort’s flagstaff. 'View of Port Royal, Jamaica' provides a well-preserved glimpse into the history of a locale whose wondrous, natural tranquility is juxtaposed with the tumultuous social and economic upheavals of the Colonial New World.
