The company, founded in 1903, had a reputation for producing some of the world's finest artisan glass. For more than 60 years U.S Presidents have traditionally given Steuben glass statues as gifts to visiting Heads of State. The custom began in 1947, when Harry Truman presented Princess Elizabeth with a Steuben bowl as a wedding gift. President Carter later gave matching Steuben pieces to the Israeli Prime Minister Menachin Begin and the Egyptian President Anwar Sadat after the signing of the Camp David Peace Accord in 1978, and every President since continued the tradition. Steuben Glass American Eagle statues have remained an iconic gift to Heads of State, given to symbolize the relationship between nations. President Nixon presented one to the Soviet Union leader Leonid Brezhnev at a meeting at Camp David in 1972, and President Reagan reserved the gift of a Steuben Eagle for his closest friends and allies. He presented one to the British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher during a visit to Washington in 1981, a gift which she later remarked upon in a letter: "Among the memories which I shall treasure are the dinner which you gave me at the White House, in every sense a memorable occasion, and the generous message which you sent to me at the Donovan Award Dinner. Thank you also for your gifts: the photographs are beautiful and the splendid eagle by Steuben is on my desk as I write."

COLLECTION of AUTOGRAPHED LETTERS from LITERARY FIGURES, including Anstey Guthrie, Walter J De la Mare, John Masefield, Joanna Trollop and Ted Hughes

Lot 45: COLLECTION of AUTOGRAPHED LETTERS from LITERARY FIGURES, including Anstey Guthrie, Walter J De la Mare, John Masefield, Joanna Trollop and Ted Hughes

Description: A selection of autographed letters from literary figures, dating from the 19th and 20th centuries. 1. A handwritten signed quotation from British poet laureate John Masefield (1878-1967): 'The days that make us happy make us wise'. One of his best known quotations, from his poem 'Biography'. Masefield served as British poet laureate from 1930 until his death in 1967. Undated. 2. Ted Hughes handwritten signed card to Peter Crookston, editor of English Heritage Magazine from 1994-99. This letter was written on March 20, 1994, thus the early days of Crookston's editorship. It is a response to a request to submit a piece. The note is very revealing of Hughes' working manner - it is vague and non-committal, willing but uncertain if he will be able to 'produce' something. With stamped envelope. 3. Two letters from Stevie Smith to Peter Crookston dating from 1969, the first handwritten and signed on August 15, granting him use of her poems and drawings, the second typed and signed on October 11, lamenting the loss of some drawings (seemingly Crookston's fault) and discussing compensation. 4. Handwritten signed letter from Mary Wesley to Jason Cheriton dated December 23, 1994, declining his request to contribute a story to his book. 5. Typed signed letter from Joanna Trollope to Jason Cheriton dated December 29, 1994, also declining to contribute to his book 'In the Company of Authors'. 6. John Galsworthy handwritten letter to unknown recipient, stating that he prefers to leave the question of whether he will give lectures during his trip to America until he gets there. Dated January 28 (1918 pencilled in underneath). 7. A typed and signed letter from Walter de la Mare dated 27 October 1947, regarding two photographs he is sending the recipient Mary Rendell. With envelope and stamp. 8. Typed and signed letter from J. B. Priestley on headed notepaper, to editor Athelstan Ridgway regarding a Ridgway's book that Priestley had lost. It mentions a book Priestley is working on about the 1850s, likely 'Victoria's Heyday', published in 1974. 9. Handwritten signed letter from Arthur Quiller Couch dated March 22nd 1895, declining an invitation, as he was 'tied to my home in the west of England just now by the illness of my little son, who is only just beginning to recover (as I hope and trust) of a serious attack of pneumonia'. His little son was Bevil Brian Quiller-Couch, who went on to become a war hero and poet. 10. Three handwritten signed letters from comic novelist Thomas Anstey Guthrie. The first is dated 25 August 1887, thanking General Johnson for sending him a copy of his book. Two date from April 1908, and are directed to J. B. Pinker Esq, discussing translation rights for Guthrie's works. 11. Letter from unknown sender from Dublin, dated Feb 23 (18)46. Appears to discuss the Athenaeum - either the magazine or the academic institution.
