Maurice Sendak WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE 1963 Early Edition Signed By Maurice Sendak In Dust Jacket Landmark Work Of Children's Literature

Lot 7002: Maurice Sendak WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE 1963 Early Edition Signed By Maurice Sendak In Dust Jacket Landmark Work Of Children's Literature

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: Where the Wild Things AreAuthor: Maurice Sendak - Maurice Bernard Sendak was an American writer and illustrator of children's literature. He was best known for his book Where the Wild Things Are, first published in 1963.Sendak gained international acclaim after writing and illustrating "Where the Wild Things Are," a Caldecott Medal-winning picture book about a boy banished to his bedroom without his supper. He deals with his anger by imagining himself king of an island filled with enormous, frightening monsters. Critically acclaimed and controversial, Sendak is one of the first children's writers to deal frankly with the fears and anxieties of childhood. "Where the Wild Things Are" is the first in a trilogy, to be followed by "In the Night Kitchen" (1970) and "Outside over There" (1981), which, in Sendak's words, are "all variations on the same theme: how children master various feelings--anger, boredom, fear, frustration, jealousy--and manage to come to grips with the realities of their lives." Mr. Sendak's original drawings are constantly in demand by museums, art galleries and collectors everywhere. Although most of his original work is archived at the Rosenbach Museum & Library in Philadelphia, his pictures are represented in many major collections around the world. It understates his importance to simply call him a genius in his field: he has been called "the Picasso of Children's Books", and for more than a half-century his work has been critically praised, admired and emulated. Retrospective exhibitions have been held at the Ashmolean Museum (Oxford, 1975), the Pierpont Morgan library (New York, 1981), the Indianapolis Museum of Art (1999), the Brennan Jewish Heritage Museum in Atlanta (2001, a version of which went on national tour), the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Books (November 2002), Brandywine River Museum (2003), and most recently a remarkable survey of his art at the Jewish Museum (New York, 2005) covering both his book work and sets/costumes for opera and ballet, subsequently extending the show to the Tampa Art Museum in Florida (2006).Publisher: Harper & Row, PublishersCity: New YorkYear: 1963Binding Style: HardcoverPagination: UnpaginatedWidth: 10.5" Height: 9.5"Book Details: Condition / Notes: This is a scarce early edition of this landmark work of children's literature, autographed by its author & celebrated illustrator Maurice Sendak. The author has signed the book on the half-title page and has included an original drawing of one of the "Wild Things" above inscription reading simply "The Eddy Collection." The volume shows very light external age/wear, and is solidly bound with clean, bright pages. The original dust jacket bears the Caldecott Medal gold foil stamp on the upper right front corner; the front flap indicates an original price of USD 4.95 and has been clipped at the lower corner. Dust jacket is preserved in mylar cover. For lots which include only books, our shipping charge applies to any address within the fifty United States. Thomas Jefferson THE LIFE AND MORALS OF JESUS OF NAZARETH 1902 First Edition Compilation Of Jesus Teachings Christianity Morality

Lot 7019: Thomas Jefferson THE LIFE AND MORALS OF JESUS OF NAZARETH 1902 First Edition Compilation Of Jesus Teachings Christianity Morality

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth: Extracted Textually from the Gospels, together with a Comparison of His Doctrines with Those of OthersAuthor: Thomas Jefferson - Thomas Jefferson was an American Founding Father, the principal author of the Declaration of Independence (1776) and the third President of the United States (1801-1809). At the beginning of the American Revolution, he served in the Continental Congress, representing Virginia and then served as a wartime Governor of Virginia (1779-1781). Just after the war ended, from mid-1784 Jefferson served as a diplomat, stationed in Paris. In May 1785, he became the United States Minister to France.Jefferson was the first United States Secretary of State (1790-1793) serving under President George Washington. With his close friend James Madison he organized the Democratic-Republican Party, and subsequently resigned from Washington's cabinet. Elected Vice President in 1796, when he came in second to John Adams of the Federalists, Jefferson opposed Adams and with Madison secretly wrote the Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions, which attempted to nullify the Alien and Sedition Acts.Elected president in what Jefferson called the Revolution of 1800, he oversaw the purchase of the vast Louisiana Territory from France (1803), and sent the Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804-1806) to explore the new west. His second term was beset with troubles at home, such as the failed treason trial of his former Vice President Aaron Burr. With escalating trouble with Britain who was challenging American neutrality and threatening shipping at sea, he tried economic warfare with his embargo laws which only damaged American trade. In 1803, President Jefferson initiated a process of Indian tribal removal and relocation to the Louisiana Territory west of the Mississippi River, in order to open lands for eventual American settlers.A leader in the Enlightenment, Jefferson was a polymath who spoke five languages fluently and was deeply interested in science, invention, architecture, religion and philosophy, interests that led him to the founding of the University of Virginia after his presidency. He designed his own large mansion on a 5,000 acre plantation near Charlottesville, Virginia, which he named Monticello. While not a notable orator, Jefferson was a skilled writer and corresponded with many influential people in America and Europe throughout his adult life.Jefferson owned hundreds of slaves, yet he was opposed to the ultimate continuation of the institution of slavery throughout his life and privately struggled with the dilemma of slavery and freedom and its compatibility with the ideals of the American Revolution. Historians are in disagreement with how much Jefferson was committed to the anti-slavery cause. After Martha Jefferson, his wife of eleven years, died in 1782, Jefferson remained a widower for the rest of his life; their marriage produced six children, of whom two survived to adulthood. According to many historians, Jefferson had a relationship with his slave Sally Hemings after his wife's death and fathered at least one and likely all of her six children, four of whom survived to adulthood, while various historians note that some evidence can also support other possible fathers. In 1807, President Jefferson signed into law a bill that banned the importation of slaves into the United States. Though Jefferson has been criticized by many modern day scholars over the issue of slavery he remains rated as one of the greatest U.S. presidents.Publisher: N. D. Thompson Publishing Co.City: Saint LouisYear: 1902Printing Information: First EditionBinding Style: HardcoverPagination: 168 pagesWidth: 5.5" Height: 7.5"Book Details: "The Jefferson Bible," or "The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth" as it is formally titled, was a book constructed by Thomas Jefferson in the latter years of his life by cutting and pasting numerous sections from the New Testament as extractions of the doctrine of Jesus. Jefferson's condensed composition is especially notable for its exclusion of all miracles by Jesus and most mentions of the supernatural, including sections of the four gospels which contain the Resurrection and most other miracles, and passages indicating Jesus was divine.Condition / Notes: Antique volume is bound in green cloth with stamped gilt lettering to spine and front cover.
