Sale Notes:
We are honored to present the important Americana collection of the late John and Lil Palmer of Purcellville, VA in its entirety at unreserved auction with no additions or deletions. An event not to be missed. The Palmers were well-known and highly-respected collectors of Americana focusing on Virginia and the South with a special emphasis on important Virginia folk pottery. John recorded detailed provenance and research notes for their collection and many pieces carry publication and exhibition records. Full-Color Catalogue Available Soon! A full color, softbound 196-page catalogue is being produced for this landmark auction and will include all 714 lots to be sold on April 5th. The catalogue is expected in-house by March 18th. Description: STRASBURG, SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA POLYCHROME-DECORATED EARTHENWARE / REDWARE PITCHER, lead-, copper-, and manganese-glazed over a slip-wash, cylindrical form with a beaded shoulder below the flared rim, strap handle with two grooves, and a pronounced collared foot. Inscribed with "308" in black grease pen under base, which is how A. H. Rice marked the catalog numbers on his collection. See lot 54 in this auction for another piece from Rice's collection with the same manner of numbering. Attributed to J. Eberly & Co. (active 1874-1903), Strasburg, VA.

Condition Report: Virtually mint with only a minor glaze flake to handle and another to foot. There are two spots on the foot where the slip-wash puddled causing a firing imperfection that resembles a repair, but is not.
