TOM LOVELL - UNION FLEET PASSING VICKSBURG

Lot 409W: TOM LOVELL - UNION FLEET PASSING VICKSBURG

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Tom Lovell - Union Fleet Passing Vicksburg - Hand Signed - Limited Edition Print - Image Size: 31 1/2"w X 16 1/2"h. Limited Edition Of: 1500 - Union General William T. Sherman Once Called The Mississippi River "the Spinal Column Of America." Certainly The Goods And Supplies That Traveled On The River Were The Backbone Of Confederate Strength; The Town Of Vicksburg, Mississippi, Was Vital To Control Of The River. In December 1862, Sherman's Land Forces, Intending To Halt The Shipment Of War Supplies To The Confederacy, Assaulted The City. It Was An Effort Doomed To Fail: The Town Was Well Fortified And Its Hills And Sheer Cliffs Proved Formidable. Sherman Then Retreated South, Joining With The Forces Of General Ulysses S. Grant. Their Combined Troops, Hoping To Let The Union Navy Circumvent Vicksburg, Tried To Cut Levees And Canals From The Yazoo River And Bayous. These Attempts Also Failed. On The Night Of April 16, 1863, A Large Part Of The Union Fleet, Under The Command Of Rear Admiral David D. Porter, Dared To Pass Directly Before Vicksburg's Heavy Artillery. Seven Ironclads Sustained Minor Damage; One Transport Sank In Flames. Once Downstream, The Surviving Ships Shuttled Union Forces Across The River From West To East, Helping The Troops Surprise Confederate Forces At Port Gibson. Steadlily, Thoughout The Month Of May, Union Troops Worked Their Way Back Toward Vicksburg. After A Six-week Siege, The Town Finally Surrendered On July 4, 1863, Ending A Decisive Chapter In The War Between The States.??about The Artist - Tom Lovell Biography 1909 - 1997 A Native American Finding A Raggedy Ann Doll On A Lonely Western Road. A Man Teaching His Blonde, Gingham-dressed, Settler Wife How To Shoot A Rifle. A Trio Of Indians Warming Their Hands Over The Chimney Of A Snow-buried Cabin In An Otherwise Empty Landscape. These Are Just Three Of The Stories Told Through The Art Of Tom Lovell, Considered By His Peers One Of The Deans Of Western Art. But That?s Not All. He Was Equally Famous For His Exciting And Thought- Provoking Illustrations For Such Magazines As Life, The Saturday Evening Post And National Geographic?as Well As His Stirring Images Of Sweeping Civil War Battles Which Were Considered So Definitive That They Were Telecast As Part Of The Famous Public Television Documentary On The Conflict And Published In The Accompanying Best-selling Book. Lovell Was The First Artist To Win The National Academy Of Western Art?s Highest Honor, The Prix De West, Twice. He Was Elected To The Society Of Illustrators Hall Of Fame In 1974 And Eventually Named A Hall Of Fame Laureate. In 1992, He Was Honored By Both The National Academy Of Western Art And The National Cowboy Hall Of Fame With A Lifetime Achievement Award And A Prestigious One-man Retrospective Show. He Has Left A Lifetime Of Work That Will Influence, Impress And Instill Emotion For Years To Come.

Hailing a Cab by Mark Lague

Lot 437S: Hailing a Cab by Mark Lague

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Hailing a Cab by Mark Lague - Edition Size: 15 - Giclee on Canvas - Artist Proof Dimensions: 36 x 24 Release Date: 2-2007 ???.The fast-paced pulse of urban life is the recurring theme in many of Mark Laguë?s paintings. His canvases capture the overall spirit of the city in loose, dynamic brushstrokes. The artist?s travels take him to many of the world?s most sophisticated cities where he thrives on the hustle and bustle of life that teems daily in the streets. Laguë travels to many of his favorite locations such as New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, London, and Paris for inspiration. One of his favorite cosmopolitan cities is Rome, Italy. The artist says, ?Rome seems to fit my aesthetic well because there is such a mix between modern life and classical architecture.? This very talented painter considers the shapes that make up the city environment a beautiful, yet abstract, composition just waiting to be put on canvas. Light is a prominent factor in Laguë?s work. His scenes of day and night life in the city are formed by the manner in which light reflects and creates interesting shapes that offer the artist an opportunity to portray the scene in a vibrant, abstract design. Night time offers the artist a wide range of contrasts?dark against light and the mixture of architectural elements offer an endless palette of color and movement waiting for Laguë to bring to life. The artist draws the viewer into the scene with a story about everyday people and life in the city?familiar things combine to form a total ?cityscape? that is an exciting, mesmerizing image to behold. A native resident of Montreal, Canada, Laguë has made the journey from a childhood talent to entering art school at age 17 to a very successful career as an animation artist at a top studio. The artist?s desire to paint on his own full-time came in 2002. He considers his technical experience in color, handling of paint, and knowing the importance of values as the solid foundation for his success. Laguë primarily works in oil, but also favors watercolor. He has won many awards, including the 2002 Award of Excellence from the Oil Painters of America; Laguë also conducts art workshops. He is widely collected and represented by several galleries around the United States. Galleries consider his work spontaneous, vibrant, and attention getting. Collectors love the subject matter, texture, energy, and light in his scenes. Join Mark Laguë on his many journeys through the urban landscape.

BONNIE MARRIS - MORNING RUN

Lot 540W: BONNIE MARRIS - MORNING RUN

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Bonnie Marris - Morning Run - Hand Signed - Canvas Edition -image Size: 42"w X 30"h. Limited Edition Of: 100 - What Separates Bonnie Marris From Other Wildlife Artists Is Not Only Her Devoted Treatment Of Her Animal Subjects But Her Meticulous Attention To The Scenery That Frames Them. The Landscape Acts As A Muted But Lovely Secondary Subject In Marris' Dynamic Wildlife Paintings. The Horses In "morning Run" Are The Embodiment Of Freedom, Pounding Forward, Needing Only To Run. The Personality Of Each Horse And Their Motion Can Be Clearly Seen: The Strong Second-in-command Just Behind The Leader, Jockeying For Position; The Skittish And Focused Chestnut And The Haughty, Almost Balletic Grays At The Borders Of The Group. Considered Individually, The Horses Are Magnificent; But As Bonnie Marris Paints Them, As A Herd In Motion, They Are Breathtaking.??about The Artist - Bonnie Marris Bonnie Marris Has Taken An Unusual Path Into Art; She Developed Her Talent By Portraying Animals ?from The Inside Out.? While She Was A Student At Michigan State University, Bonnie Illustrated Several Major Books. One Volume She Worked On Was A Leading Expert?s Mammalogy Text That Contained Several Hundred Drawings And Detail Studies. This Massive Project Attracted The Attention Of Noted Zoologist George Schaller, Who Invited Bonnie To Prepare The Art For Posters That Would Support His Worldwide Rare Animal Relief Programs. Beyond Academic Training And Emotional Involvement, Art Requires Another Element For Which There Is No Substitute: Experience. Each Year, Bonnie Makes Two Major Trips, And Countless Smaller Ones, To Observe And Learn About The Wildlife She Loves. In 1980, One Such Voyage Took Her To Alaska, Where She Lived In The Wilderness For Six Months. She Recounts, ?to Get Into A Natural Environment And See The Animals On Their Own Terms Is As Important As Knowing The Animals Themselves. For Instance, Gray Wolves On The Tundra?the Vast, Vast Tundra With The Wind And Other Forces Of Nature At Their Most Extreme?that?s What Makes Them What They Are. To Stand Not Far From A Grizzly That Is So Overpowering, So Beautiful And So Large . . . To Watch It Pull Up A Small Tree With A Swipe Of Its Paw And Just A Few Minutes Later See It Delicately Picking Blueberries With Its Black Lips. . . Alaska Changed Me; It Gave Me The Biggest Incentive To Paint And Increased My Interest In The Predators: The Cats, Bears, Coyotes, Wolves And Foxes. They Exist On So Many Levels. Their Moods Show In Their Eyes And We Can Learn So Much From Them.?

Is One Leading The Way Or Is The Other Giving Orders? This Simple Summer Backyard Scene By Artist Steve Hanks Will Find A Home In Your Playroom, Nursery Or Bathroom.??about The Artist - Steve Hanks Although Teachers Often Cited His Artistic Ability, Steve Hanks? Main Interest While Growing Up Around San Francisco Was Sports. As A Young Teenager, Hanks Pursued Surfing And Tennis With Passion. He Eventually Tired Of A Steady Diet Of Competitive Tennis, But Continued To Surf, Finding A Spiritual Connection With The Ocean. ?surfing Had A Strong Influence On My Paintings,? He Says. ?the Ocean Often Appears In My Work, Because I Have Such Strong Feelings For It.? Although It Was Apparent Early On That He Had Talent, Hanks Refused To Do The Required Assignments In His High School Art Class And Earned A Grade Of C In The Class. ?to Prove I Was Good, I Did A One-man Show At The High School And Sold My First Painting To Another Art Teacher,? He Says. After High School Hanks Enrolled In Summer Session Commercial Art Courses At The Academy Of Art In San Francisco. ?the Only Way I Could Convince My Parents To Let Me Go Was To Say I Was Going Into Commercial Art,? He Says. ?i Didn?t Even Know What That Was!? He Did Well In His Commercial Art Classes, But It Was A Life Drawing Class That Captured His Interest. He Focused His Energy On The Study Of Anatomy And Figure Drawing And Transferred Into The California College Of Arts And Crafts In Oakland, California. He Graduated In The 1960s With A Bachelor Of Fine Arts Degree, And Then Moved Back To New Mexico In Search Of A Home Art Gallery. Initially, He Drew In Pencil And Painted In Oils. His Paintings Were Impressionistic While His Drawings Were More Realistic. Eventually, An Allergic Reaction To Oils Forced Him To Experiment With Watercolors. Using The Techniques Learned From Other Mediums, He Found He Could Create Watercolors As ?finished? As Oils. Deeply Affected By The Emotions, Shifting Attitudes And Music Of The 1960s, The Music Of 60s Icon Bob Dylan Often Accompanies Hanks As He Paints In His Studio Today. Steve Hanks? Paintings Are Much More Than Endearing Images Of Women And Children. Rather Than Conveying A Specific Message Through His Paintings, Hanks Prefers To Explore Memories And Emotions. ?all Art Is An Escape To Somewhere You Want To Be Or A Feeling You Want To Have," Hanks Says. "people See Different Things In My Paintings Because We All Have Different Backgrounds And Feelings.? Hanks Highly Collected Nudes Convey An Introspective Solitude That Prompts The Viewer To Think About His Or Her Own Life And Path. ?women Occupy A Special Niche In My Sensitivity. They Express More Storytelling Ability. There?s More Magic In Them,? He Says. Art Jurors Began Recognizing The Quality Of His Work In 1973. Awaiting the Rise by Kyle Polzin

Lot 576S: Awaiting the Rise by Kyle Polzin

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Awaiting the Rise by Kyle Polzin - Edition Size: 195 - Giclee on Paper - Signed & Numbered Dimensions: 16 x 24 Release Date: 6-2012 ???.Growing up along the Texas coast and also spending many happy days in the country with his grandparents gave Kyle Polzin much inspiration for his subject matter as a young artist. Working closely with his father to develop his talents, the artist started his training at an early age. Craftsmanship is a common thread in Polzin?s heritage; his father is a gifted artist and both grandfathers were skilled craftsmen. Along with an appreciation of art, Polzin?s family enjoyed the outdoors. The young artist has been influenced by the many childhood experiences of fishing the coastal waters and hunting and exploring the land with his father and grandfathers. Polzin was encouraged by his family to pursue painting as a career. Upon graduating high school in 1992, he began his formal fine arts training at Victoria College with an emphasis on oil painting. After graduating from college, the artist took advantage of many opportunities to enhance his talents. In 1996, he began instructional sessions with the master painter Dalhart Windberg, whose painting style has influenced him since childhood. This invaluable learning experience helped launch Polzin?s fine art career. With a palette of warm tones and serene settings, Polzin?s paintings are acknowledged as masterful compositions reflecting an Old World style. The artist?s talent for composition and his range of abilities allow him to paint a variety of subject matter ? from hunting and fishing and coastal scenes to wildlife and still lifes to western themes. Polzin?s works exhibit a combination of quiet strength and character that draws the viewer into his scenes. Whether painting beautiful flowers or memories of hunting or fishing trips, Polzin creates paintings that are striking images that leave a lasting impression. Polzin?s original paintings are represented by The Legacy Gallery in Jackson, Wyoming, and Scottsdale, Arizona, Port A Gallery in Port Aransas, Texas, and also by Southwest Gallery in Dallas, where, in 2007, he had his first, one-man show. All 27 of the original works exhibited sold on opening night. The artist?s beautiful works have been featured in Southwest Art and Art of the West magazines and on the cover of Texas Outdoors Journal. Texas Ducks Unlimited chose Polzin as their Sponsor Artist for 2006-07 for his painting, ?Hunters? Heritage.? Polzin?s works are also exhibited in corporate and private collections worldwide. The artist currently resides in Austin, Texas, with his wife, Leigh, and their young daughter, Kate.
