KASIMIR MALEVICH - Gouache on buff paper

Lot 800: KASIMIR MALEVICH - Gouache on buff paper

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Kasimir Malevich (Russian, 1879 - 1935). "Suprematist Composition". Gouache on buff paper. c1916. Signed in pen with the initials, lower right. Very good condition, with minor edge chipping, else fine. Provenance: Estate of a private collector, Munich, Germany. The paintings of the Russian avant-garde have, in general, elicited two types of interpretation: one focuses on issues of technique and style; the other concentrates on social and political issues. The former method is usually applied to Kazimir Malevich?s early paintings, grounded as they are in the forms of Cubism, Futurism, and other contemporaneous art movements; the latter largely avoids Malevich in favor of more politically engaged artists such as El Lissitzky, Aleksandr Rodchenko, and Vladimir Tatlin. From the formalist?s standpoint, this composition is, in its mastery of shapes, a perfect example of his newly created Russian style, Suprematism. Image size: 12 7/16 x 8 15/16 in. (316 x 227 mm). [27704] |30000| {R100}

Condition: some handling creases in the image, middle right; scratches; minor losses. "In the mid-1930s Man Ray tried his hand at color photography using the carbro process (carbon plus bromide), created by making three separate photographs of a subject through a red, a green, and a blue filter. He made this still life for the cover of his 1934 book, 'Man Ray Photographs 1920-1934 Paris', which was intended to present the range of his photographic work to an American audience. He included in the composition a bust of himself as well as curios from his studio, some of which appear in his works. He may have included the model, who bears a significant resemblance to Man Ray's former lover and studio apprentice Lee Miller, to suggest that he counted Miller among his creations."
