Description: Title: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest: A NovelAuthor: Ken Kesey - Ken Kesey was one of Oregon's most famous, critically acclaimed, and controversial authors. His rise to literary and cultural prominence was the product of his distinctive skills and experiences.Kesey was born on September 17, 1935, in La Junta, Colorado, and in 1946 he and his family moved to Springfield, Oregon. In both high school and at the University of Oregon, Kesey was a champion wrestler. After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Oregon's School of Journalism in 1957, Kesey attended Stanford University's creative writing program under the tutelage of acclaimed historian, novelist, and short story writer Wallace Stegner. While at Stanford, Kesey participated in U.S. Army experiments involving lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) and mescalin. These hallucinogenic experiences would change Kesey's outlook on life and inspire his writings. He published One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest in 1962 and the quintessential Oregon novel Sometimes a Great Notion in 1964. Both novels explore what Kesey saw as the conflict between modern industrial society and individuality, a struggle between conformity and freedom. This struggle was also central to Kesey's personal life, where he turned to psychedelic drugs to find personal liberation.Considered a founding father of the 1960s counterculture, Kesey promoted drug use as a path to individual freedom. He founded a group known as the Merry Pranksters and in 1964 he and the Pranksters traveled the country in a day-glo colored school bus named "Further." This bus was sometimes piloted by Neal Cassady, a Beat icon made famous in Jack Kerouac's 1957 largely autobiographical novel On the Road. The Pranksters were notorious for their "acid tests" and became the inspiration for Tom Wolfe's book The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, published in 1968. The Pranksters also promoted the "Warlocks," a band later known as the Grateful Dead.In 1965, Kesey's drug use landed him in jail for six months. Upon his release, Kesey moved to a farm near Eugene to raise his family. He would publish a loosely organized memoir of his experiences in 1973's Kesey's Garage Sale. In 1975 One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest became an Oscar winning film and Kesey briefly worked as a professor of writing at the University of Oregon. He published his third novel, Sailor Song in 1992, and lived in Pleasant Hill, Oregon, until his death on November 10, 2001. During this time he was a part-time consultant for the Consolidated Aircraft Corporation at San Diego and spent a year and a half in California, chiefly as supervisor of aerodynamic work on the wind tunnel at the California Institute of Technology. Karl D. Wood was the founder of three aeronautical engineering programs: Cornell (1929-1937), Purdue (1937-1944) and Colorado (1944-1963). Lot 3017: 4V THE DIGEST OF JUSTINIAN 1985 First Edition Roman Law Mommsen Edition Watson Translation

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: The Digest of JustinianAuthor: Justinian I - Justinian I (Latin: Flavius Petrus Sabbatius Justinianus Augustus), commonly known as Justinian the Great, was Byzantine Emperor from 527 to 565. During his reign, Justinian sought to revive the Empire's greatness and reconquer the lost western half of the historical Roman Empire. One of the most important figures of Late Antiquity and the last Roman Emperor to speak Latin as a first language, Justinian's rule constitutes a distinct epoch in the history of the Eastern Roman Empire. The impact of his administration extended far beyond the boundaries of his time and domain. Justinian's reign is marked by the ambitious but only partly realized renovatio imperii, or "restoration of the Empire".Because of his restoration activities, Justinian has sometimes been called the "Last Roman" in modern historiography. This ambition was expressed by the partial recovery of the territories of the defunct Western Roman Empire. His general Belisarius swiftly conquered the Vandal Kingdom in North Africa, extending Roman control to the Atlantic Ocean. Subsequently Belisarius, Narses, and other generals conquered the Ostrogothic Kingdom, restoring Dalmatia, Sicily, Italy, and Rome to the Empire after more than half a century of barbarian control. The prefect Liberius reclaimed most of southern Iberia, establishing the province of Spania. These campaigns re-established Roman control over the western Mediterranean, increasing the Empire's annual revenue by over a million solidi. During his reign Justinian also subdued the Tzani, a people on the east coast of the Black Sea that had never been under Roman rule before.A still more resonant aspect of his legacy was the uniform rewriting of Roman law, the Corpus Juris Civilis, which is still the basis of civil law in many modern states. This work was carried out primarily by his quaestor Tribonian. His reign also marked a blossoming of Byzantine culture, and his building program yielded such masterpieces as the church of Hagia Sophia, which was to be the center of Eastern Orthodox Christianity for many centuries.A devastating outbreak of bubonic plague in the early 540s marked the end of an age of splendour. The Empire entered a period of territorial decline not to be reversed until the 9th century.Justinian is considered a saint amongst Orthodox Christians, and is also remembered by some in the Lutheran Church on November 14. (courtesy of Wikipedia)Editor: Alan Watson, Paul Krueger, Theodor Mommsen - Christian Matthias Theodor Mommsen was a German classical scholar, historian, jurist, journalist, politician, archaeologist, and writer generally regarded as the greatest classicist of the 19th century. His work regarding Roman history is still of fundamental importance for contemporary research. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1902, and was also a prominent German politician, as a member of the Prussian and German parliaments. His works on Roman law and on the law of obligations had a significant impact on the German civil code (BGB)Publisher: University of Pennsylvania PressCity: PhiladelphiaYear: 1985Printing Information: First EditionBinding Style: HardcoverNumber of Volumes: 4 Complete: YesWidth: 7.5" Height: 10.5"Book Details: Condition / Notes: Set is bound in reddish brown cloth with dark gray cloth spines. Itemq : liber VII : Decretalium novis aliquot constitutionibus auctus.Author: Giovanni Paolo Lancellotti - Giovanni Paolo Lancelotti was an Italian canonist. He was born in Perugia in 1522. He graduated as a doctor of law in 1546, and taught law shortly afterwards (1547 or 1548) in the university of his native town. Except for two short sojourns in Rome, he passed the remainder of his life in Perugia, in the study of law and belles-lettres. He died there in 23 September 1590.He owes his worldwide reputation to his "Institutiones Juris Canonici", the text of which is reproduced in most editions of the "Corpus Juris Canonici". Following the example of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian, who had entrusted to three professors the task of drawing up an elementary work on Roman law entitled the "Institutiones", intended for use in the schools, Lancelotti conceived the plan of a like work on the Catholic Church's canon law. Pope Paul IV charged him officially with the execution of his plan, and for this purpose he went to Rome in 1557. To his great regret, neither Paul IV who died in 1559, nor his successor Pius IV gave authentic and official approbation to his work, published by Lancelotti at Perugia in 1563 as an entirely private venture. The "Institutiones" are divided into four books, treating successively persons, things (especially marriage), judgments and crimes. This division was inspired by a principle of Roman law: Omne jus quo utimur vel ad personas attinet, vel ad res, vel ad actiones (All our law treats of persons, or things, or judicial procedure.) It is a small and very simple didactic work, and may be considered a clear, convenient resume of canon law. Its divisions have been followed on broad lines by later authors of elementary treatises on canon law, and they have also borrowed its title "Institutiones". Lancelotti, however, erred when he applied to canon law the unsuitable divisions of Roman law.Having been published before the promulgation of the Council of Trent, this work had not the advantage of following its decrees; subsequent editors have remedied this defect by notes and commentaries. The best-known editions are those of Doujat (Paris, 1684; Venice, 1739), and Christian Thomasius (Halle, 1715-17).Lancelotti's other writings are: "Institutionum juris canonici commentarium" (Perugia, 1560; Lyons, 1579), in which he gives the history of his aforesaid work; "De comparatione juris pontificii et caesarei et utriusque interpretandi ratione" (Lyons, 1574); "Regularum ex universo pontificio jure libri tres" (Perugia, 1587); "Quaestio an in cautione de non offendendo praestita comprehendantur banniti nostri temporis" (Lyons, 1587). James Joyce A FIRST DRAFT VERSION OF FINNEGANS WAKE 1963 Experimental Work European Modernism Edition & Annotations By David Hayman

Lot 3039: James Joyce A FIRST DRAFT VERSION OF FINNEGANS WAKE 1963 Experimental Work European Modernism Edition & Annotations By David Hayman

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: A First Draft Version of Finnegans WakeAuthor: James Joyce - James Augustine Aloysius Joyce was an Irish novelist and poet, considered to be one of the most influential writers in the modernist avant-garde of the early 20th century. Joyce is best known for "Ulysses" (1922), a landmark work in which the episodes of Homer's Odyssey are paralleled in an array of contrasting literary styles, perhaps most prominently the stream of consciousness technique he perfected. Other major works are the short-story collection "Dubliners" (1914), and the novels "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" (1916) and "Finnegans Wake" (1939). His complete oeuvre includes three books of poetry, a play, occasional journalism, and his published letters. Joyce was born to a middle class family in Dublin, where he excelled as a student at the Jesuit schools Clongowes and Belvedere, then at University College Dublin. In his early twenties he emigrated permanently to continental Europe, living in Trieste, Paris and Zurich. Though most of his adult life was spent abroad, Joyce's fictional universe does not extend beyond Dublin, and is populated largely by characters who closely resemble family members, enemies and friends from his time there; "Ulysses" in particular is set with precision in the streets and alleyways of the city. Shortly after the publication of "Ulysses" he elucidated this preoccupation somewhat, saying, "For myself, I always write about Dublin, because if I can get to the heart of Dublin I can get to the heart of all the cities of the world. In the particular is contained the universal."Editor: David HaymanPublisher: University of Texas PressCity: AustinYear: 1963Printing Information: First EditionBinding Style: HardcoverPagination: 330 pagesWidth: 7.5" Height: 10.5"Book Details: Condition / Notes: Volume is bound in green cloth with gilt-lettered black spine label.
