1819 Virginia Sampler Eliza Fisher/Franklin Family

Lot 5: 1819 Virginia Sampler Eliza Fisher/Franklin Family

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Descended through the Fisher family, to the Roper family, to the Franklin Family, down to the Walters Family, and finally to the Prater Family. Lawson D. Franklin was born in Rutledge, Virginia in 1801, the son of Owen Franklin and Elizabeth Roper.  The Franklin/Roper family moved to Jefferson Co., TN in the early 1800s. The Fishers were related to the Ropers. The sampler came down from his mother's family.  The Roper Family was a prominent Dandridge, Tennessee family operating the Roper Tavern. A Roper child married into the Branner Family of Jefferson City, Tennessee, the builders of Glenmore Historic Mansion and the developer of early East Tennessee railroads. Lawson D. Franklin was one of the partners in the railroads, with the Branners and Ropers, he also was one of the largest slave traders in Tennessee and Mississippi prior to the Civil War. His slaves poisoned him resulting in his death. Mr. Franklin was the builder of 5 historic mansions, all standing and in use today, 2 of which are historic house museums. The message on the sampler reads as follows: Eliza Ann Fisher, in the Ninth year of her Age, 1819/The charms from blooming beauty shows, From faces/Heavenly fair. We To the my and The rare. With/Resemblance opt compare. With Resemblance opt for ah/How soon, how soone, they all decay. The lily droops/The rose is gone. And beauty fades away./ ZBut where bright virtue shines content, With sweet/discretion joind. Where wildness rules the peaceful/Breast, and wisdom guides the mind, When charms/like these, dear maid conspire, They person to oppose/They kindle friendships purest home. And everlasting love./ I may have misread some of these words but they are close complete with misspellings. The dimensions are 12 1/2" wide by 17 1/4" tall. The sampler was hanging in the descendants home on a wall attached to a felt backing. The condition is excellent, this is almost 200 years old and from Virginia with a long history of Tennessee ownership.

Isaac Franklin Walnut Leaf Shelf 1850 Tennessee

Lot 6: Isaac Franklin Walnut Leaf Shelf 1850 Tennessee

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Descended in the family of Lawson D. Franklin, one of the largest slave traders in Tennessee and Mississippi, lived in White Pine, Tennessee, builder of 5 mansions still standing today, this Walnut hand made and likely slave made wall shelf has an old finish but probably not original. The back panel is cut like a leaf with the half circle shelf in front supported by a scroll cut Walnut decorative piece. 22 1/2" tall, 10" wide, 6 1/2" deep. One old repair on the base of the support done many years ago. Circa 1850. This is not one of the later Victorian machine made pieces, but an authentic piece of folk art. Riverview or Fairfax, as the house was known, was a home built by Lawson D. For Issac Franklin, his son. The house stands today in its restored splendor on the river dividing Jefferson & Cocke County in Eastern Tennessee. This shelf is without a doubt handmade and probably slave made prior to the Civil War. Lawson D. Franklin was poisoned and killed by his slaves early in the Civil War. If this shelf could talk, there would be many good stories it could tell. Descended through the Franklin family to the Walters family, through a marriage, and then a marriage to the Prater family with this being sold by a great great granddaughter of Lawson D. Franklin, Sara Louise Prater Mott, the owner of the above sampler from the same family.
