Subsequently he concentrated on copying works from the cabinet of his professor Bleuland, after which he developed himself in the painting of cityscapes, portraits and, of course, landscapes. Verheijen is known for his meticulously painted works, recognisable for their warm colours.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Woman farmer in her flat-boat at dusk - Signed l.l. - Oil on canvas, 62.3 x 86.6 cm - N.B.: Van Rossum du Chattel painted countless impressions of the river Vecht in the province of Utrecht and its surroundings, prompting critics to nickname him 'painter of the Vecht'. Another preferred subject by his hand is the landscape around The Hague, the area where he grew up. He was given his first painting lessons by his father, Jan Hendrik van Rossum du Chattel, later on he attended the Teekenschool (drawing school) in The Hague and worked in the studio of The Hague impressionist Willem Maris. Despite the clear influences by The Hague School painters he developed a typically personal style.

Lot 19: Jozef Israëls (Groningen 1824 - The Hague 1911)

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Rabbi reading by the window - Signed l.l. - Oil on canvas, 36.7 x 29.8 cm - N.B.: Initially the parents of Jozef Israëls envisaged a future as a rabbi for their son. Descended from a prosperous Jewish family, Israëls was sent to a religious school at a young age where he was taught Hebrew, received bible lessons and studied the Talmud. This Jewish upbringing had a strong influence on his intellectual and spiritual development. Soon his talent for drawing and painting took the upper hand: he attended classes at the Academie Minerva in the city of Groningen and in 1840 ended up in the studio of Jan Adam Kruseman (1804-1862) in Amsterdam. Under his guidance Israëls worked during the day, while attending classes in the evenings at the Rijksacademie van Beeldende Kunsten. Jozef Israëls always felt strongly connected to his Jewish roots which in his later years came to expression in a series of works depicting Jewish clergy.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Volendam - Signed l.r. - Oil on canvas, 72.2 x 93.9 cm - Provenance: Private collection, Belgium - N.B.: The painter Johan 'Mari' Henri ten Kate was born as the youngest of three brothers in a well-off family on 4 March 1831 in The Hague. At a very young age he learned to paint, taught by his brother Herman Frederik ten Kate and later on at the Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten in The Hague. Mari painted in the Romantic style, such as children playing in the dunes, at the sea-side or on the ice. The simple life of farmers, fishermen and their children inspired him: their simplicity and (assumed) virtue remained an ongoing fascination. (source: www.museumderoos.nl)

Ik houd van geen tamme boel. Mijn opvatting is, dat je schoonheid rondom je kan zien, in het volle, woelende, werkelijke, krachtige leven, zonder tot sentimentaliteiten te vervallen. Lot 29: Floris Arntzenius (Surabaya 1864 - The Hague 1925)

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: The Spuistraat, The Hague - Signed l.l. - Oil on canvas, 40.5 x 32.3 cm - Provenance: Private collection, The Netherlands - N.B.: Arntzenius is considered the master of The Hague street views and as a The Hague contemporary and equivelent of the great Amsterdam impressionists George Hendrik Breitner and Isaac Israels. However, where Breitner and Israels had permits to work on the streets, Arntzenius had to hire a window from which to work from. The Hague, more quiet than Amsterdam, inspired him to paint intimate city scapes of a small format, in which he concentrated on the atmospheric mood. He liked the look of streets after the rain, when the wet asphalt reflects the colours and the misty weather obscures the outlines. The rythm of the city fascinates him, the uneven gables, the vertical movement of windows and facades, interupted by signs and flagpoles and the bustle of people and vehicles in the streets. His fine detailing and atmospheric rendition of the streetlife make his paintings unique documents of the time.
