Ben Foster American, 1852-1926 Forest Interior, Autumn

Lot 34: Ben Foster American, 1852-1926 Forest Interior, Autumn

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Ben Foster American, 1852-1926 Forest Interior, Autumn Signed Ben Foster. (ll) Oil on canvasboard 24 x 18 inches Provenance: Private collection On his return to America in 1887 after a period of study in Paris, Ben Foster divided his time between his Manhattan studio and his country home in Cornwall Hollow, Connecticut. Working in a style influenced by the French Barbizon School, he became known for intimate views of lyrical landscapes in the Tonalist mode. Foster-who once said "I like my pictures better without people"-was especially fond of portraying the "opulent and mellow seasons," which allowed him to bring out the more evocative qualities of his subjects. Forest Interior, Autumn exemplifies his preference for "rich but low-keyed color," and his feeling for the striking contrasts of autumnal shadows and golden leaves aglow in sunlight as well as for strongly balanced compositions. Carl Christopher Graf American, 1890-1947 Brown County, Autumn Hillside

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Carl Christopher Graf American, 1890-1947 Brown County, Autumn Hillside Signed Carl C. Graf (lr) Oil on board 22 7/8 x 29 7/8 inches Provenance: Private collection A member of the Brown County movement in Indiana, Carl Graf was born in Bedford, Indiana and worked as a cartoonist for the local paper before enrolling in the John Herron Art Institute in Indianapolis, where he studied with William Forsyth. He also studied at Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Art Students League, and the Cincinnati Art Academy. Working in a style blending impressionism and realism, Graf loved to feature Indiana's native trees, especially sycamore and beech. In this painting, the trunks of two of the latter in the foreground are framed against a rolling countryside at the peak of fall finery. Their branches seem to reach out to embrace countryside, where a cluster of homes overlooks a deep-set valley. Contrasting with the hazy light, the distant lavender hills, and grassy meadows, the fiery oranges of the changing leaves create a vibrant and decorative pattern. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC

Gruppe on the reverse Oil on canvas 30 x 32 1/8 inches Provenance: Private collection Exhibited: New York, Spanierman Gallery, LLC, Emile A. Gruppe (1896-1978), Jul. 10-Aug. 30, 2008 Emile Gruppe was born in Rochester, New York and spent his youth in Holland, where his father was an artist and picture dealer. Returning with his family to America at the outbreak of World War I, Gruppe studied at the Art Students League as well as in Provincetown and Paris. He made his initial visit to Gloucester, Massachusetts, in 1925. Summering there for the rest of his life, he opened an art school in the town and gradually turned from a tonal style to a more dynamic blend of realism and Impressionism. He never tired of portraying the boats, shorelines, and ever-changing skies of Cape Ann, finding endless compositional possibilities in this subject matter. In this painting, Gruppe used the vibrant red color of the sails of a boat in the harbor to involve us directly in the scene, providing a point of reference from which the rest of the arrangement radiates. Description: Emile Albert Gruppe American, 1896-1978 Covered Bridge - Vermont, circa 1940s Signed Emile A. Gruppe (lr); inscribed Vermont Covered Bridge on the stretcher Oil on canvas 25 x 30 inches Provenance: Private collection, Oklahoma Private collection Exhibited: New York, Spanierman Gallery, LLC, Emile A. Gruppe (1896-1978), Jul. 10-Aug. 30, 2008 Rockport, MA, Rockport Art Association, Emile Gruppe Retrospective, Oct. 5-Nov. 23, 2008 Literature: Carol Lowrey, "Emile A. Gruppe (1896-1978)," American Art Review, Dec. 20, 2008, 103 color illus. Having established his reputation in the mid-1920s as a painter of Gloucester, Massachusetts, Emile Gruppe began making trips to Vermont in the 1930s, drawn to its trees, mountains, and quiet county roads crossed by covered bridges. He combined realism and Impressionism in this quintessential New England winter scene, showing the solid wood-covered bridge anchored by the trees above it. It stands firmly against a ground covered in a thick snowfall on which light and shadows cast a subtle array of patterns. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC
