Walnut grips, Sam Colt's address to upper 9.5 cm barrel, some loss of filigree to cylinder, with number 2 engraved to barrel flange, and cleanly engraved 'Dr. John K. Kane' as shown. In a walnut box, 28 x 15 x 5 cm, including box of unopened combustable envelope cartridges, an Eley London tin case of detonators, Colt's patent slug cast, 9 bullets, and cleaning equipment. Brass-hinged, black velvet innards, no key. Dr Kane was born in 1833, the son of eminent U.S. politician, the Hon. John K. Kane. His brother was the celebrated Colonel Thomas L Kane of the Bucktail Regiment of Pensylvannia, during the Civil War. Dr Kane searched for his brother Elisha Kane, the arctic explorer in an 1856 expedition to the Northern Seas into Greenland.

Description: A Rare Early Number Colt Model 1851 Navy Revolver , A rare early number Colt Model 1851 Navy revolver manufactured in 1851. This revolver has the standard Army/Navy finish with single letter Ordnance sub-inspection marks on the barrel, cylinder, trigger guard, back strap and grips with the two-line "COLTS/PATENT" marking on the left side of the frame. The one-piece walnut grips had an oil finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "-ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW-YORK CITY-" in one line. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Texas Navy battle scene and "COLTS PATENT No. 7716"and "Engraved by WS Ormsby New York" beneath. The full serial number "7716" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and back strap and on the side of the cylinder. All of the visible serial numbers match. Details BBL: 19 cm, With Stock: 32 cm; Gauge: 36 percussion; Finish: casehardened; Grips: walnut; Serial Number: 7716

Description: An Early Number Colt Model 1861 Navy Revolver, c 1861 manufactured in 1861, during the height of the Civil War. This revolver has the standard Army/Navy finish, heavily pitted, with the two-line "COLTS/PATENT" marking on the left side of the frame and '36 CAL' on the trigger guard. The walnut grips have an oil finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "-ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK USA. AMERICA-" faded in one line. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Texas Navy battle scene and "COLTS PATENT No. 3540"and "Engaged May 1848" faded to side of cylinder. The full serial number "3540" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and back strap. All of the visible serial numbers match.
