Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: American School 19th Century (i) A Lake Shore Oil on canvas 10 1/2 x 13 5/8 inches (ii) A Rutted Path through Fields Oil on canvas 10 1/2 x 14 5/8 inches (iii) Old Bridge, Grez-sur-Loing, France Oil on canvas 10 7/8 x 14 1/2 inches Provenance: William Thorne Descent to private collection Private collection, New York These three paintings came from a private collection consisting of a signed watercolor by Irving R. Wiles. The image of the bridge depicts the old stone bridge over the Loing River in Grez-sur-Loing, a village situated about seventy kilometers from Paris, on the outskirts of the Fontainebleau Forest. The town was at its height of popularity as an artists' colony in the late 1870s and 1880s, drawing scores of American, British, and Scandinavian artists. The Scottish novelist Robert Louis Stevenson joined the early contingent of artists in the 1870s, which included the Americans, Birge Harrison, Will Hicox Low, Willard Metcalf, Walter Launt Palmer, Theodore Robinson, and the expatriate John Singer Sargent. Other American artists frequented Grez in the next decade, including Kenyon Cox, Bruce Crane, Francis Chadwick, Alexander Harrison, and Edward Simmons. While only the bridge painting can be identified as a view of Grez, the three paintings in this lot are in the mode of what was known as the"grey school of Grez School," including a limited tonal palette influenced by the art of the French painter, Jules Bastien-Lepage, low perspectives leading to uptilted picture planes, and diffused atmospheric light conditions. Davies Estate on the reverse Oil on canvas 14 1/4 x 17 3/4 inches Provenance: Estate of the artist Private collection Exhibited: New York, Spanierman Gallery, LLC, Arthur B. Davies: Painter, Poet, Romancer & Mystic, Mar. 29-Apr. 28, 2012 Literature: Lisa N. Peters, Arthur B. Davies: Painter, Poet, Romancer & Mystic, online exhi. cat., New York: Spanierman Gallery, LLC, 2012, pp. 8-9 color illus., no. 6 An artist exemplifying the Symbolist strain in American art in the early twentieth century, Arthur B. Davies played a critical part in the acceptance of modernist art in America, both through his leadership in the organization of the 1913 Armory Show and his role as an advocate for many vanguard artists, including Robert Henri, Marsden Hartley, Rockwell Kent, and Alfred Maurer. In his work, Davies often created his own interpretations of ancient myth. Two Figures with Deer is exemplary in this regard. Rendered in a strong orange and red palette, the painting is resonant with mysterious meaning, presenting what appears to be a reinterpretation of the story of the goddess Artemis and the mortal youth, Actaeon, while the figures in the upper right may represent the three fates. The painting illustrates Davies's view of myth as a living form, stretching across the ages. In his era, Davies was perceived as an artist who left the mundane level of commonplace life behind to enter the realm of the dream. His use of a style combining naturalism and abstraction, as in this work, provided a point of entry into such an alternative reality. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC Collection of American Art

Description: Arthur Bowen Davies American, 1863-1928 Mountain Pass, Italy Stamped with a Collection G. Montereau on the reverse Pastel and gouache on paper 12 3/8 x 9 1/2 inches Provenance: Gift of the artist to Germaine Montereau By descent in her family Private collection Exhibited: New York, Ferargil Galleries, Arthur B. Davies: Watercolors and Bronzes, 1929 New York, Spanierman Gallery, LLC, Arthur B. Davies: Painter, Poet, Romancer & Mystic, Mar. 29-Apr. 28, 2012, no. 10 Literature: Lisa N. Peters, Arthur B. Davies: Painter, Poet, Romancer & Mystic, online exhi. cat. New York: Spanierman Gallery, LLC, 2012, color Illus., no. 12 Note: Davies and Germaine Montereau, a French tapestry manufacturer with workshops in Morocco, met and became good friends in the 1920s through their mutual interest in tapestries. Davies gave Montereau a number of his works as gifts. She purchased others. The collection was in the hands of her heirs until recently. Toward the end of his life, Arthur B. Davies spent part of each year in Italy, where his favorite subject was the Apennine Range in the Umbrian mountains. A characteristic work from this time, Mountain Pass, Italy reveals Davies's rhythmic use of pastel and gouache to create a semi-abstract image, expressing his way of seeing the world around him through a poetic lens. The critic Edwin Alden Jewell described such European images by Davies as "poignantly beautiful" (New York Times 1929). This work was part of the collection of Davies's friend Germaine Montereau of the Manufactures des Gobelins, the factory in Paris and Beaugency, France, who received many works from Davies in exchange for lessons she provided him in the art of weaving. Charles Warren Eaton American, 1857-1937 Sundown

Lot 38: Charles Warren Eaton American, 1857-1937 Sundown

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Charles Warren Eaton American, 1857-1937 Sundown Signed Chas Warren Eaton. (ll) Watercolor on paper 21 1/2 x 18 1/2 inches Provenance: Private collection Watercolor was a natural medium for Charles Warren Eaton. Using it throughout his career-and even teaching outdoor watercolor painting at one point-he developed a fluid touch, with which he softened edges and blurred landscape forms in keeping with a Tonalist approach. In this image, dark pine trees standing against a sky filled with the sun's last radiance before it slips below the horizon, create an abstract pattern, as in a Japanese print or the linear armature of stained glass. For Eaton, the trees represented endurance, and a continued spiritual presence in nature unbowed by man. He was in agreement with William Cullen Bryant's statement that "The Groves were God's first temples" (A Forest Hymn, 1860), while the poignant mood in his many pine tree images expresses his sense of loss at the vanishing of once-wild places. Description: Ben Foster American, 1852-1926 Big Spring Signed Ben Foster (ll) Oil on canvas 23 1/2 x 23 1/2 inches Provenance: Private collection In 1887, after a period of study in Paris, where he became familiar with the art of the French Barbizon School, Ben Foster returned to the United States. Thereafter he divided his time between his Manhattan studio and his country home in Cornwall Hollow, Connecticut, where he derived inspiration for intimate scenes in the Tonalist manner. Foster, who once said "I like my pictures better without people," was especially fond of the "opulent and mellow seasons," which allowed him to bring out the more evocative qualities of his subject using fluent brushwork and a minimum of detail. Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Samuel Lancaster Gerry American, 1813-1891 Calm Pond (White Mountains, New Hampshire) Signed S. L. Gerry (lr) Oil on canvas 20 1/4 x 27 inches Provenance: Private collection Literature: Erik Brockett. "Painting in the White Mountains." Antiques and Fine Art (Summer 2005), 159 color illus. A self-taught artist associated with the art life of Boston in the second half of the nineteenth century, Samuel Lancaster Gerry was a cofounder in 1854 of the Boston Art Club, and taught many artists including J. Frank Currier. Although he painted portraits and figure pieces, he is best known for his landscapes of the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Rendered in the transcriptive mode of the Hudson River School, works such as Calm Pond reflect the influence on Gerry of the work of Durand, while demonstrating his proclivity for restorative and serene places of natural beauty. As a writer stated in the artist's obituary in the Critic: "Mr. Gerry was ever an ardent lover of the beautiful in this world, and with his intense religious feeling almost worshipped nature as a glorious creation of God."
