Lot 401: Château Margaux (1989)

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Château Margaux 1989 Margaux. 1er Cru Classé The wine possesses a leathery, oaky nose, medium body, and good ripeness, but next to the 1990, the 1989 is dwarfed by that wine's richness, intensity, and length. The tannins come across as more elevated, as well as slightly greener and tougher. The 1989 may put on more weight and come together, much like the 1985 did after 4-6 years in the bottle, but for now, this wine seems to follow the pattern of many 1989 Medoc first-growths, revealing an unexciting level of quality. Give it 5-6 more years of cellaring, and drink it over the following 20. 89 WA 96 WS 1 bt. per lot $400 - $500

Lot 402: Château Margaux (1996)

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Château Margaux 1996 Margaux. 1er Cru Classé The color is opaque purple. The wine offers extraordinarily pure notes of blackberries, cassis, pain grille, and flowers, gorgeous sweetness, a seamless personality, and full body, with nothing out of place. The final blend (85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc) contains a high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon. The 1996 Margaux tastes complete and long, although backward. My instincts suggest this wine will shut down, but at present it is open-knit, tasting like a recently bottled wine. The fruit is exceptionally sweet and pure, and there are layers of flavor in the mouth. I do believe this wine will develop an extraordinary perfume, and possess a high level of richness. 99 WA 97 WS 3 bts. per lot $2,300 - $2,800

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Carruades de Lafite Rothschild 2001 Pauillac The elegant second wine, 2001 Carruades de Lafite reveals notions of lead pencil shavings intertwined with cherry, currant, cranberry, and wet stone-like aromas. Lot 404: Carruades de Lafite Rothschild (2002)

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Carruades de Lafite Rothschild 2002 Pauillac Similar to its bigger sibling, but leaner and not nearly as concentrated, as one might expect being a second wine, the 2002 Carruades reveals the Lafite fragrance of lead pencil shavings intermixed with red and black currants, plums, and a hint of cherries. Medium-bodied, with tart acidity, this is a wine to drink over the next decade. 87 WA 87 WS 2 bts. per lot $600 - $700

Lot 405: Carruades de Lafite Rothschild (2003)

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Carruades de Lafite Rothschild 2003 Pauillac A spectacular value as well as a sleeper of the vintage is the 135,000-bottle cuvee of 2003 Carruades de Lafite. This amazing effort rivals such superb second wines as the 1989 Bahans-Haut-Brion and 1982 Forts de Latour. A serious red, it is sexy, opulent, rich, and luscious with silky tannin, enormous body, and wave after wave of mocha-infused black cherry and cassis fruit. It is almost too good to be believed. While drinkable now, it should evolve for 12-15 years or longer. 93 WA 89 WS 2 bts. per lot $600 - $800

Lot 406: Château Bahans Haut-Brion (2000)

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Château Bahans Haut-Brion 2000 Pessac-Léognan The 2000 Bahans Haut-Brion is fully mature, but I had indicated that back in 2003, giving it an anticipated maturity date of 2005-2016. Its smoky, soft berry fruit and notes of fresh porcini mushrooms intermixed with cigar tobacco and black currants are complex. This complexity is followed by a fleshy, elegant, silky wine to drink over the next 5-6 years. 91 WA 90 WS 12 bts. per lot $1,200 - $1,500

Description: Burge Family, Shiraz, Draycott Vineyard, Reserve 1998 (1) Duck Muck, Shiraz 1997 Wild Duck Creek(2) Duck Muck, Shiraz 2000 Wild Duck Creek(1) Readers looking for a winery that unleashes a hedonistic style should check out the 2000 Shiraz Duck Muck (200 cases). This is Shiraz at its ripest and headiest (16% alcohol). Lavishly wooded (100% high toast new oak is employed), it boasts an unevolved, sweet, layered, explosively full-bodied personality. This thrilling, hedonistic effort pushes Shiraz to the limit. It falls somewhere between an over-the-top Shiraz and a late-harvest offering. Extremely pure and concentrated, it is the type of wine that does not exist anywhere except South Australia. Drink it over the next 10-15+ years. Unique! 95 WA 4 bts. per lot $1,000 - $1,200

A hint of truffles emerges as it sits in the glass. Description: Château Cos d'Estournel 2002 (3) Château Cos d'Estournel 2003 (3) The prodigious, fantastic 2003 Cos d'Estournel is a candidate for “wine of the vintage.” A blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon (unusually high for this chateau), 30% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc, 17,500 cases were produced from low yields. An inky/blue/purple color is accompanied by a compelling perfume of black fruits, subtle smoke, pain grille, incense, and flowers. With extraordinary richness, full body, and remarkable freshness, elegance, and persistence, this is one of the finest wines ever made by this estate. The good news is that it will be drinkable at a young age yet evolve for three decades or more. 98 WA 97 WS 6 bts. per lot $900 - $1,100

Lot 418: Château Ausone (1990)

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Château Ausone 1990 St. émilion. 1er Grand Cru Classé (A) Long-time readers of this publication know that I believe Ausone is the most intellectually challenging wine made in Bordeaux. The wine often tastes as if it needs 40-50 years to shed some of its astringency and closed style. The 1990 is not a charming, precocious wine. It is closed, but the color is a dense, dark ruby with no amber or orange at the edge. The fruit is sweeter, and the wine is more muscular, richer, and broader in the mouth, without losing Ausone's tell-tale minerality, spice, and curranty fruit. There is a good inner-core of sweet fruit in this medium to full-bodied wine that needs another 15-20 years of cellaring. Can the 1990 possibly rival the 1983 or 1982? Perhaps ... but don't bet on it. 92 WA 1 bt. per lot $400 - $500

Description: Château Smith Haut Lafitte 1998 (1) Château Smith Haut Lafitte 1997 (3) Château Smith Haut Lafitte 1996 (3) Château Smith Haut Lafitte 1995 (4) Château Smith Haut Lafitte 1999 (1) This is a sizable wine for the vintage, although I do not believe it will have the longevity of the 1998 or 2000. A deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by sweet, asphalt-tinged, earthy, cassis fruit with toasty pain grille notes in the background. There are loads of fruit and charm as well as a creamy texture revealing hints of tobacco, currants, and wood smoke. It is medium-bodied and supple-textured, and will provide ideal drinking over the next 12-15 years. 90 WA 12 bts. per lot $600 - $700

Lot 420: Château Smith Haut Lafitte (2000), Château Smith Haut Lafitte (2001)

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Château Smith Haut Lafitte 2000 (3) Château Smith Haut Lafitte 2001 (3) The 2001 Smith Haut Lafitte may not have as much power as the 2000, but it is very close in quality. A blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, and 13% Cabernet Franc, it was macerated for four weeks, enjoyed malolactic in barrel as well as stirring of the lees, and was bottled with minimal clarification. This elegant, stylish, deep ruby/purple-colored effort reveals notes of smoke, graphite, and red as well as black fruits in its perfumed, nicely evolved bouquet. With sweet flavors, medium body, outstanding concentration, and impressive purity, this finely-etched Pessac-Leognan should hit its peak in 4-5 years, and drink well over the following 12-14+. 92 WA 6 bts. per lot $400 - $500

Lot 421: Château Cheval Blanc (1986)

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Château Cheval Blanc 1986 St. émilion. 1er Grand Cru Classé (A) At one time I thought the 1986 was better than the 1985, but the open-knit charm and currant exotic personality fo the 1985 makes a more persuasive case for it than for the more reserved, tannic, and backward 1986. The 1986 still has a youthful dark ruby saturated color with no amber at the edge. The wine possesses a developing bouquet that offers up weedy tobacco, juxtaposed with sweet black berry, raspberry, and cherry fruit. The new oak that was so obvious in the wine's youth has moved to the background, offering more of a cedary character than raw wood. Medium to full-bodied, and moderately tannic, this is a delineated Cheval Blanc with more of a Medoc personality than typical St.-Emilion opulence. The wine is rich, intense, and well-made, but still requiring a few more years of bottle age. 92 WA 2 bts. per lot $800 - $900

Description: Château Haut-Brion 1989 Pessac-Léognan. 1er Cru Classé The wine exhibits an opaque ruby/purple color, as well as a sweet nose of jammy fruit, tobacco, spicy oak, minerals, and smoke. Fabulously concentrated, with huge levels of fruit, extract, and glycerin, this wine is nearly viscous because of its thickness and richness. Low acidity gives the wine even more appeal and adds to its precociousness. Description: Château Haut-Brion 1994 (1) Château Haut-Brion 1993 (1) Château Haut-Brion 1996 (1) The 1996 exhibits a deep ruby/purple color, and a surprisingly tight bouquet. With aeration, notes of fresh tobacco, dried herbs, smoke, asphalt, and black fruits emerge ... but reluctantly. It is tannic and medium-bodied, with outstanding purity and a layered, multidimensional style. Description: Château Haut-Brion 2000 Pessac-Léognan. 1er Cru Classé The 2000 Haut-Brion showed incredibly at the tasting, and for me is one of the three or four most prodigious wines of the vintage. A compelling nose of roasted herbs, scorched earth, sweet blueberries, plums, black currants, and a hint of graphite is followed by a deep, layered, sumptuously textured, full-bodied Haut-Brion, but one with extraordinary complexity. Description: Château Haut-Brion 2001 Pessac-Léognan. 1er Cru Classé Haut-Brion's 2001, which was bottled late (the end of September, 2003), possesses an unmistakable nobility as well as a burgeoning complexity. Plum/purple to the rim, this blend of 52% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 12% Cabernet Franc is playing it close to the vest, having closed down considerably after bottling. Nevertheless, it reveals pure notes of sweet and sour cherries, black currants, licorice, smoke, and crushed stones. Medium-bodied with excellent purity, firm tannin, and an angular, structured finish, it requires 5-7 years of cellaring. 94 WA 95 WS 2 bts. per lot $600 - $700

Description: Château Haut-Brion 2002 Pessac-Léognan. 1er Cru Classé Aromas of minerals, forest floor, fresh mushrooms, plums, and currants are present in the moderately fragrant bouquet. Angular, with hard tannin, medium body, and sweet plums as well as currants, this 2002 Haut Brion is harder and tougher-textured than from barrel. Like many 2002s, it is reserved and angular at present. It remains to be seen whether it will flesh out and reveal more charm and succulence. 89 WA 93 WS 3 bts. per lot $700 - $900

Description: Château Haut-Brion 2003 Pessac-Léognan. 1er Cru Classé The blockbuster 2003 Haut-Brion (13% alcohol) possesses extremely high tannin, but that component is well-concealed by a cascade of mulberry, blackberry, cherry, and plum-like fruit. There is even a hint of figs under the blue and red fruit spectrum. While broad and ripe with a sweet, glyceral mouthfeel as well as a long, powerful, persistent finish, it retains its elegance and nobility. A wine of both power and finesse, it will benefit from 3-4 years of cellaring, and keep for 25-30. 95 WA 96 WS 2 bts. per lot $700 - $900

In addition to its aromatic complexity, this medium-bodied effort reveals classic elegance and delicacy as well as sweet fruit in the mouth and a long finish. Give this streamlined, civilized wine 2-4 years of bottle age and drink it over the following 20-25 years. It is amazingly similar to Haut-Brion's 1999. 92 WA 2 bts. per lot $700 - $900

Lot 436: Château Haut-Brion (1990)

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Château Haut-Brion 1990 Pessac-Léognan. 1er Cru Classé In terms of the brilliant complexity and nobility of the aromatics, scorched earth, black currants, plums, charcoal, cedar, and spices, the 1990 offers an aromatic explosion that is unparalleled. It is always fascinating to taste this wine next to the 1989, which is a monumental effort, but much more backward and denser, without the aromatic complexity of the 1990. The 1990 put on weight after bottling, and is currently rich, full-bodied, opulent, even flamboyant by Haut Brion's standards. It is an incredible expression of a noble terroir in a top vintage. While it has been fully mature for a number of years, it does not reveal any bricking at the edge, and I suspect it will stay at this level for another 10-15 years ... but why wait? It is irresistible now. 98 WA 1 mag. per lot $1,100 - $1,300

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Château Lagrange 1999 (2) Château Lagrange 1998 (2) Château Lagrange 2000 (2) An impressive performance by Lagrange, the 2000 possesses a saturated ruby/purple color with obvious notes of melted licorice, creme de cassis, and toasty new oak. This ripe, dense, full-bodied St.-Julien is chewy, thick, high in tannin, large-bodied, and impressively long and dense. As always, it is less expressive than some of its peers, but it is loaded as well as reasonably priced. 93 WA 93 WS 6 bts. per lot $300 - $400

Lot 439: Château Pétrus (1989)

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Château Pétrus 1989 Pomerol This wine is more tightly knit, more tannic, but every bit the blockbuster concentrated effort that its younger sibling, the 1990, is. It seems to need more coaxing from the glass, but the color is virtually identical, a dense ruby/purple with no lightening at the edge. In the mouth the wine cuts a broad swath, with spectacular intensity, richness, massive concentration, and high levels of tannin, yet the wine is fabulously well-delineated and like its sibling, the 1990, has a finish that goes on for nearly a minute. It does not seem to be quite as evolved as the 1990, and my instincts suggest there is a bit more tannin, but both are as prodigious as Petrus can be. 100 WA 100 WS 1 bt. per lot $2,600 - $3,200

Lot 443: Château Léoville Las Cases (2001), Château Léoville Las Cases (1999), Château Léoville Las Cases (2003)

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Château Léoville Las Cases 2001 (1) Château Léoville Las Cases 1999 (2) Château Léoville Las Cases 2003 (2) The solidly made 2003 Leoville Las-Cases (13.2% alcohol) is a blend of 70.2% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17.2% Merlot, and 12.6% Cabernet Franc. In this incredibly hot vintage, the alcohol is slightly lower than achieved in 2002, a cool-climate year. While not a profound example of Las-Cases, the 2003 is muscular, deep, and full-bodied with an impressive ruby/purple color, a tight but juicy bouquet of vanilla, black cherries, crushed rocks, and flowers, a sweet attack, and moderately high tannin. Backward and fresh, displaying impeccable delineation and purity, it can be enjoyed between 2012-2023. 93+ WA 97 WS 5 bts. per lot $600 - $800

The tannin is well-integrated in this precocious, forward 2001. Drink it over the next 10-12 years. 90 WA 8 bts. per lot $1,300 - $1,500

The wine is medium to full-bodied, with excellent purity, and clean, rich, concentrated flavors. Critics might argue that it is too "international," but it is an outstanding effort. 90 WA 12 bts. per lot $1,500 - $1,900

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Château Palmer 1997 (1) Château Palmer 1995 (1) Château Palmer 1993 (1) Château Palmer 1990 (1) Château Palmer 1989 (1) Château Palmer 2000 (1) This has turned out to be a prodigious Palmer. The saturated purple color offers up sexy, full-bodied, almost masculine notes of roasted meats, blackberries, and creme de cassis intermixed with notions of toast, smoke, and camphor. Only 50% of the production made it into the 2000, a blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon and 47% Merlot. The wine is opulent, rich, and full-bodied, with tannin that has become sweeter with age. Its best showing yet, most importantly, has been from bottle. This is a great Palmer that should rival the best of recent vintages, which have all been stunning, as this estate continues to go from strength to strength. 96 WA 97 WS 6 bts. per lot $1,200 - $1,400

Lot 450: Château Palmer (2001), Château Palmer (2000), Château Palmer (2002)

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Château Palmer 2001 (2) Château Palmer 2000 (1) Château Palmer 2002 (3) A successful wine for the vintage, this blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 8% Petit Verdot boasts complex notes of menthol, black currants, plums, licorice, and a hint of cappuccino in its stunning aromatics. Dense, medium to full-bodied, with high levels of tannin in a big, full-bodied style (much in the spirit of such classic Bordeaux vintages as 1966, 1986, and 1996), this wine possesses superb purity and serious length, but should be purchased only by those with considerable patience and a good, cold cellar, since it will need plenty of time. 94 WA 91 WS 6 bts. per lot $900 - $1,200
