Rare Female Head

Lot 12: Rare Female Head

Description: Rare Female Head An exceptional ancient Etruscan terracotta head of a female, dating to approximately 400 B.C. The head, rendered in glorious classical style, depicts a young female votary, her wavy hair parted in the middle with diadem at the top. She is shown veiled, with incised pupils. The figure represents a votary, or dedicant. In ancient times it was common for people to present gifts to the Gods in anticipation of, or in thanks for, a favor. This was often in the form of a sculpture, in which case it represented either the dedicant or the God/Goddess. Such figures are characterized by relatively unworked backs, suggesting they were placed against a wall in a shrine or temple. This is an unusually well preserved and beautiful example of Etruscan votive art.
