Empire Gold Snake Necklace Woven in Gold, around 1810

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Old gold - so-called 1/3-gold Austria, around 1810 1 fine amethyst of approximately 1.5 Carat Decorated with enamel, rubies and miniature turquoises Extremely unusual and valuable piece of jewellery Necklace as a snake's body made of fine, airily woven gold threads Enameled and richly decorated clasp in the shape of a snake's head Overall weight: 82 grams Length: 103 cm Hallmarks: A3-hallmark for Austrian old gold Very good condition Provenance: Private Austrian jewellery collection Snake's head clasp and necklace in snake pattern - an exquisite, near-logical combination which may have inspired the goldsmith of this unique jewel to his creation around 200 years ago.The necklace of finest woven gold threads becomes narrower to each end, stylizing a snake, which, when closing the clasp bites its own tail. The head and the end of the tail are made of gold with enamel decorations, as well as turquoises and rubies. The pointed end of the tail is framed by a small row of turquoises. The upper end of the tail is garlanded by small rubies, under which scale-shaped small enamel plates are arranged, a decoration which is replicated in the much larger snake's head. At the side of the head blue and green enamel decorations, which are partially found in the head. On the snake's mouth small turquoises create a cross pattern and lead the eye to the turquoises of the tail. In the middle of the head this noble snake shows off a pronged crown and a superb amethyst in its midst. The necklace is in excellent condition and shows only slight, minimal age-related flaws. The total weight is 82 grams and its length is 103 cm.The design of this necklace is shaped by its time of creation: 1810/20. It is part of the Empire Period style, which was the time of Napoleon I (1804-1815), the French version of Classicism. Like Napoleon, this style quickly spread through all of Europe. Some entire street blocks were built and entire castle-interiors were redesigned. The straight, symmetrical forms, as well as the antique decorations with stucco were typical of the Empire Period. Even if Empire is to be seen as a counter reaction to the pomposity of Baroque and Roccoco, it however should not be seen as a reduction. The motifs in Greek-Roman and Egyptian styles were tried in different combinations to create unique and high quality patterns. After Napoleon's Egyptian campaign (1798) many examples of Egyptian craftsmanship were brought to Europe and inspired creations such as this necklace.
