Description: in Mémoires a l Académie des Sciences de l Institut de France, Tome VII, first edition , some very light occasional spotting or finger-soiling, later calf-backed boards, original wrappers bound-in, 4to, Paris, 1841. The scarce first edition of Abel s great paper on elliptic integral. "Abel spent his first months in Paris completing his great memoir; it is one of his longest papers and includes a broad theory with applications. It was presented to the Academy of Sciences on 30 October 1826 Cauchy and Legendre were appointed referees, Cauchy being chairman Abel awaited the referees report. No report was forthcoming, however; indeed, it was not issued until Abel s death forced its appearance. Cauchy seems to have been to blame; he claimed later that the manuscript was illegible" (DSB). In fact, Cauchy lost the manuscript, and it was only rediscovered in 1841, the occasion of this publication. It was edited by Guillaume Libri, and then lost again, not to reappear until 1952.
