Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: REMBRANDT VAN RIJN (dutch 1606-1669)/span "THE DESCENT FROM THE CROSS" 1633. Etching and engraving 20 13/16 x 15 7/8 in. (52.9 x 40.3cm) [Bartsch, Hollstein 81; Usticke's fifth state of 5] provenance: /spanBellette Hofmann Fine Art, New York, New York. Private Collection, Maryland.

Condition Report: Framed, matted and with Bellette Hofmann label on verso of framing. In generally good overall condition with margins on all sides and image appears to be in fine condition. In the margins, there are some generally minor condition defects: a small restored area (where there is loss to the sheet) in margin at lower right outer corner, tiny tear in bottom margin at lower right, at bottom margin at left there are three small abraded areas, a small loss with tiny tear at outer left bottom margin near lower left corner, a tiny tear in lower margin at center, small losses and repair at upper outer left margin, small loss in outer top margin at center left, and apparent restored vertical tear at top edge of sheet at center right, approx. 1 inch long, extending from margin into part of image (Apart from the restored tear, all of the other areas of minor damage described above are strictly confined to the margins, are generally unobtrusive and do not touch the image itself). Minor cockling to sheet and with tape hinges in each corner verso affixed to undermat. Overall sheet size: 21 1/8 x 16 1/8 inches. We see no watermark on verso of sheet. Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: MANNER OF MATTEO DI GIOVANNI DI BARTOLO, CALLED 'MATTEO DA SIENA' (italian 1430-1495)/span A TRIPTYCH: THE CENTRAL PANEL, VIRGIN AND CHILD WITH SAINTS; THE LEFT PANEL, POSSIBLY THE ARCHANGEL MICHAEL; THE RIGHT PANEL, AN APOSTLE Tempera on panel with gold ground 19 3/4 x 13 7/8 in. (50.2 x 35.2cm) (center panel) 20 x 6 7/8 in. (50.8 x 17.5cm) (left panel) 19 3/4 x 6 3/4 in. (50.2 x 17.1cm) (right panel) 20 x 27 5/8 in. (50.8 x 70.2cm) (overall) provenance: /spanCollection of Irving Francis Impink, one of the original founders of the Reading Museum. Thence by descent in the family. Private Collection, Lancaster, PA. note:/span A variation by Di Giovanni is in the Pinacoteca Nazionale, Sienna.

Condition Report: Most of this triptych appears in original, unrestored condition. The majority of the Virgin, Christ Child and two flanking saints are largely in unrestored, original condition. This triptych does however have areas of restoration, although with at least one of the pigments employed (a dark brown), it is difficult to ascertain with certainty whether these brown pigments – seen in parts of virgin and the 'floor' upon which each saint stands in the outer panels. The Virgin's headdress is clearly largely repainted – on the left, the restoration extends down to the edge of the Christ child's halo; on the right, the restoration extends down to just above the Virgin's shoulder. The aforementioned brown pigment is used to highlight the outer trim to top of bodice and out trim to sleeves of Virgin's bodice, along with the area within the Virgin's right sleeve. In the center panel, at lower right, the visible surface disruption appears possibly due to varnish inconsistencies, and there is restoration in this area. The bottom outer edge (the raised area) of center panel is restored. The three panels are backed to thicker wood panels, each with some amount of mechanical damage: i.e. losses, imperfections, nicks and some localized crazing. In the center panel, on the reverse, there is a vertical crack that runs through the length of the panel, approx. 4 1/2 inches away from outer left edge in center panel. This crack does not appear to extend to the front of the painted panel. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid.
