ROGERS RANGERS TOWARD TICONDEROGA 1759 - JOHN BUXTON

Lot 2W: ROGERS RANGERS TOWARD TICONDEROGA 1759 - JOHN BUXTON

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Rogers Rangers Toward Ticonderoga 1759 - John Buxton - Hand Signed - Hand Signed - Limited Edition Print - - Image Size: 24"w X 18"h. Edition Size:450 - If the enemy pursues your rear, take a circle till you come to your own tracks, and there form an ambush to receive them and give them the first fire. If your number be small, march in a single file, keeping at such a distance from each other as to prevent one shot from killing two men. These are just two of a list of fighting techniques and methods known as Rogers' Ranging Rules, compiled by Robert Rogers in the mid-1750s. Many of his tactics are still practiced by the US Army today. In this painting by John Buxton, it is the summer of 1759 and France and Great Britain are locked in their final struggle for supremacy in North America. A scouting party led by the famous Robert Rogers pauses atop Mount Pelee, overlooking Lake George, on its way to observe French activity at Fort Ticonderoga. British General Jeffrey Amherst relies heavily on intelligence provided by his intrepid American Rangers as he prepares his offensive against the French. Once the Rangers' proficiency was recognized, they became Independent Companies on the Regular British Establishment and they were paid for by the Crown. Their dress was a distinctive combination of military, frontier, and native styles, and they practiced then-unconventional tactics. The Rangers are accompanied by Royal Artillery Lieutenant Thomas Davies, whose artistic efforts left us a valuable record of colonial America. A member of Rogers' Stockbridge Indian Companies accompanied him in this mission. He was subject to Ranger discipline, but wore native dress and served under his own Indian officers.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: James Bama - - Limited Edition Canvas - Image Size: 24"w X 18"h. Edition Size:100 - To create the scene that would become "Heading for the High Ground," artist James Bama called upon his friend Jim Williams. "Williams," says Bama, "is a real modern-day mountain man. He used to trap and he lived in the Southwest in a cave. He had an old-fashioned porcelain bathtub and all that you would expect. He?s a terrific guy.? With Williams signed on to model for the painting, they traveled to nearby Rimrock Dude Ranch to borrow a horse for the day. James Bama?s portraits of the denizens of the Southwest are renowned for their touching combination of Old West valor and modern reality. With "Heading for the High Ground," Bama hearkens back to both a legendary time and a time that could have been only yesterday.

Yellowstone Face Off by Kyle Sims

Lot 13S: Yellowstone Face Off by Kyle Sims

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Yellowstone Face Off by Kyle Sims - Edition Size: 50 - Giclee on Paper - Artist Proof Dimensions: 20 x 28 Release Date: 3-2012 ???.As a native of the West, Kyle Sims? love of the vast landscapes and the array of animals inhabiting them came naturally. Early exposure to wildlife has made Sims feel at home in the wild among the many creatures such as elk, bison, deer, pronghorn, bighorn sheep, and moose. Sims captures the essence of all that nature offers to him to tell a story through his canvases. The artist paints to visually relive the experiences he has had in the wild. Sims says, ??being in close contact with creatures other than human is very exciting and emotionally stimulating. I have to relay that onto canvas so as to share it with others. Some of the animals can be very aggressive and unpredictable. Other animals can be extremely social, much like humans, causing my curiosity to grow. That is why I paint what I paint.? Sims is young, but he has an impressive portfolio of work that embodies the talent and experiences of a much more seasoned artist. His goal is to be the best painter he can be. Living in Montana and being surrounded by the many subjects he loves to paint, Sims travels and takes in all that the magnificent landscape offers. From spring wildflowers in the Grand Tetons to Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone to snow-covered vistas throughout Big Sky country, Sims observes, sketches, and photographs animals to later bring them to life on canvas. He takes advantage of every opportunity to also paint on location. Crediting their advice and studying their techniques, Sims has observed and worked with some of the most admired artists painting today. Sims has also learned to interpret wildlife through first-hand experience. The artist believes, ?The more interaction there is going on in the field, the better the storytelling ? and the painting.? The talented Sims credits his parents and his wife, Joylene, and their encouragement and total support of his work for his success. His parents recognized his talent and encouraged him through art lessons, while also taking Sims to art galleries where he was able to view works by some of the best wildlife painters in the country. His wife, Joylene, is Sims? biggest fan and very much admires and supports the artist?s dedication to his painting. Sims is a Signature Member of the Society of Animal Artists; he also participates in several prestigious venues such as the annual Masters of the American West at the Autry National Center, the Prix de West at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, and at the National Museum of Wildlife Art?s Western Visions Show. Sims? works hang in many private collections throughout America. He is exclusively represented by Trailside Galleries in Wyoming and Arizona.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Branding the Remnants by Tim Cox - Edition Size: 950 - Canvas - Signed & Numbered Dimensions: 20 x 30 Release Date: 2-2006 ???.As a young child, Tim Cox vowed he ?was going to be a cowboy artist? when he grew up, and he has lived that dream for 30 years. Growing up in a small farming and ranching community in Arizona was a natural environment that influenced Cox?s love for being surrounded by cattle and horses and the wide open spaces. While most of the artist?s time is spent painting, he rides and works on various ranches throughout the West and also raises cattle and trains horses he owns. Cox?s everyday experience with the cowboy life is reflected in the outstanding works that he creates. He combines color, value, perspective, accuracy, and design in his scenes of the daily life of the cowboy. As a perfectionist, his attention to detail and hands-on knowledge of the cattle and horses he so loves to paint have earned the artist legends of admirers and collectors who appreciate his accurate portrayals of western life. Viewers are brought up-close and personal with the animals and people who inhabit Cox?s world. The West comes alive in his paintings. Considered one of the great western artists of our time, Cox is one of today?s most successful painters in his genre. Through the years, many accolades have been bestowed on this very talented artist, and this year Cox was asked to join the prestigious Cowboy Artists of America; he participated in the 2008 exhibition. Cox has won numerous awards for his wonderful art. In 2008, Décor magazine featured Cox as one of the 14 Most Enduring and Successful Poster Artists. In 2007, his painting, ?Good Horses and Wide Open Spaces,? won the Express Ranches Great American Cowboy Award; at this same exhibit in 2004, ?Along Eagle Creek? won the award. In 2003, the artist was honored with one of the most prestigious awards in western art at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum exhibit. Cox?s painting, ?On to Better Pastures,? won the coveted Prix de West Purchase Award. In 2001, the artist was awarded the Will Rogers Western Artist of the Year by the Academy of Western Artists and Friends of Western Art. Cox is also a three-time winner of the Olaf Wieghorst Best of Show at The Mountain Oyster Club. Tim, a fourth generation Arizonan, and his wife, Suzie, enjoy the life that the artist paints on their ranch in New Mexico that they call home. Surrounded by their cattle and horses, they truly live the western life that most of us can only dream about.

Press Forward, Men by Bradley Schmehl

Lot 18S: Press Forward, Men by Bradley Schmehl

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Press Forward, Men by Bradley Schmehl - Edition Size: 950 - Print - Signed & Numbered Dimensions: 20 x 30 Release Date: 1-2003 ???.As an artist who loves and studies history, Bradley Schmehl has made it his life?s work to research the subjects for his paintings through diaries, letters, books, visiting historical sites, and generally immersing himself in any materials available to him. From the Civil War to the cowboys of the West, Schmehl finds his subjects fascinating. Talking and exchanging ideas and information with others who share Schmehl?s interest in history also offer the artist opportunities to expand his resources. The artist says, ?History is a world which is past, yet exerts its influence on us all. It is possible to visit and experience the world of history through the work of writers, filmmakers, living historians, and artists. I want to help open the window on our history so that more people can share in the view.? Schmehl?s detailed paintings reflect the many historical aspects he includes in his images. As an avid reader, the artist tries to capture in his mind the events chronicled in the books and other materials he reads. Schmehl also consults with historical experts. Armed with all the research available to him, the artist?s goal is always to paint each element of an event or story. From uniforms to weapons to horses to even the time of day and weather conditions, Schmehl?s paintings are as authentic as possible. The artist usually starts with a rough pencil sketch, mostly done on location, then he engages his models to pose as the various characters in the image and photographs them. Once Schmehl is satisfied that his concept is historically accurate, he commences creating his painting. Working in oil on canvas, the artist creates a rough under-painting. After drying, he over-paints the details and refines his brushwork. Schmehl describes his technique as ?painterly realism.? ?I strive to capture the true nature of the light, the color, but I make no effort to disguise the brushstrokes. Even while attempting to render meticulous detail, I strive to paint boldly and deliberately.? Schmehl has traveled throughout the country in pursuit of his subject matter. Extensive trips to Civil War battlefields, to other historical sites, to even being on the range in Texas have allowed the artist to collect and record the many, many notes, sketches, and library of materials that contribute to Schmehl?s fine work. A Schmehl painting gives the viewer a unique perspective on the subject matter portrayed. As the details in the image come to life, an appreciation of history is evident. When not on a research trip, Schmehl cherishes the time he and his wife, Becky, spend in their 1885 Victorian home with their two cats. As committed Christians, the artist and his wife are active in their church; Brad plays the guitar in the worship band. Come live history through the eyes and paintings of Bradley Schmehl?it will be a most enjoyable journey.

Description: Ebenezer And The War Horse - Judy Larson - Hand Signed - Limited Edition Canvas - Image Size: 24"w X 24"h. Edition Size:200 - Click here to explore the hidden image keys in Judy Larson's fine art. Out of the millions of horses that have shared our country's history, only a few have distinguished themselves enough for their names to be remembered. Among these select few is Ebenezer, Chief Joseph's renowned Appaloosa racehorse. Red roan in color, with large blood-red spots on his white rump, he was not the prettiest horse in the herd, but he could run like the wind. So famous was he that newspapers in Walla Walla and Lewiston, Washington recorded each time Chief Joseph rode him into town. Everyone with a good, fast horse of his own, whether frontiersman or Native American, dreamed of the day when his horse would beat Chief Joseph's Ebenezer. But, alas! Ebenezer won all his races well out in front of the best horses in the region. The black horse portrayed in "Ebenezer and the War Horse" honors another of Chief Joseph's horses. Although his name has not survived through time, he was special, as well, for he was the horse that Chief Joseph chose to ride to surrender.

Golden Lakes Trail by Bill Anton

Lot 32S: Golden Lakes Trail by Bill Anton

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Golden Lakes Trail by Bill Anton - Edition Size: 15 - Giclee on Canvas - Artist Proof Dimensions: 20 x 24 Release Date: 8-2007 ???.Bill Anton was born in Chicago in 1957 and later moved to Prescott, Arizona. He graduated from Northern Arizona University. Later, after committing to painting full-time, he studied under Michael Lynch and Ned Jacob, who encouraged him to paint from life. ?While the nature of my work necessitates much studio time, more and more of my painting is done outside.? Anton?s work has been published in Southwest Art, Architectural Digest, Art of the West, Equine Images, Western Horseman and Art-Talk. Corporate collections that include his work are Sears, Dupont, State Farm Insurance, Bank of America, Hewlett Packard, and Trust Company of the West. His award winning work has been displayed at the Prix de West at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, Masters of the American West at The Autry Museum, The National Center for American Western Art, the Old West Museum, and The National Museum of Wildlife Art. In addition, his work is in the permanent collection of the prestigious Gilcrease Museum. ?I do not see myself as a biographer of the cowboy. I know some artists feel they are recording history on the ranches as life there is today, but the focus of my work has always been mood and passion. If I?m recording anything, I?m recording how I feel about the west. I want the viewer to feel the drama of atmosphere and the mystery of a western night. I want the volume and portent of a cloud to be evident in the calligraphy of a brushstroke. The pack of muscle below a horse?s shoulder should be energized by a gestural application of paint. ?You see, I love to paint. And I love the American west. I was born in Chicago, but the Sierra Nevada, Sangre de Cristo, Sawatch and a hundred other ranges of our rocky mountains were the only ?Big Shoulders? I was ever interested in. Walking thunderstorms, sunstruck cedars, rimrock and artfully abstract water patterns charge the landscape with impossible beauty. ?Amidst this nobility is its caretaker: the rancher. With the natural ease of generations bred to the saddle, he is a powerful image further ennobled by a fine horse. An artist under the spell of the west has the privilege of marshalling the virtues of landscape, figure andequine painting into one supremely paintable subject: the American cowboy.? - Bill Anton

His eyes light up when he talks about training his Border Collie or a particularly wary horse, the days he has spent gathering cows in the high county or following a herd of wild horses. The paintings of Jim Rey tell the story of cowboys as living remnants of a bygone era. The stories he paints are both his own and those of the people and places he knows and loves. The work of Jim Rey is collected nationally and internationally. His art has been exhibited in the Fredric Remington Museum in New York, as well as in many noted shows and exhibitions. His paintings have been used by Bantam Books and Encyclopedia Brittanica. Description: The Listener - James C. Christensen - Hand Signed - Limited Edition Print - Image Size: 20"w X 20"h. Edition Size:350 - "There are two types of people?those who wait to talk and those who listen." ?Anonymous In the Dolby® surround sound of our daily lives, we all have to find our own mute button. ?Since a painting has no soundtrack, the title character at the center of 'The Listener' has found the best way to shut off all the noise in the visual cacophony around him by closing his eyes,? Christensen says. ?Listening to his still, small, inner-voice, he remains centered without being overcome. We can all find peace in this busy world, but sometimes need to be reminded that we are in charge of our destiny and each of us has the ability to focus without being pushed and pulled as victims. The characters found in the colorful 'noise' around the listener in this painting take many forms including politicians, mothers-in-law, musicians and famous artists . . . can you find Picasso? Through it all, our listener ignores the noise in favor of his own personal tranquility."
