Description: CALONNE, Charles Alexandre de. Dello stato della Francia presente e avvenire del Sig. di Calonne Ministro di Stato Traduzione del C.B.C sulla quinta edizione di Londra corretta ed accresciuta dall’Autore Parte Prima [Seconda]. S.l. né t., (Italia), 1791 2 Vols.large 8vo; Binding in boards, name of the Author on the spine; pp. 278 incl. Title page; 246 incl. Title page, 2 woodcut ornaments.
Condition Report: Rare first Italian edition. Calonne, Douai 1734-Paris 1802, the financial controller of the kingdom of France from 1783 to 1787, tried to curb the budget deficit by proposing a rigorous reform of the tax system, but went for this as opposed to the Parliament, with the Nobility and with the clergy and was finally dismissed by Louis XVI. He took refuge in England where he wrote in 1790 this documented and controversial book that takes aim all the innovations implemented by the National Assembly and sharply criticizes the thought of the Enlightenment, particularly Rousseau so. The work, which makes specific reference to official documents and the most important economic and political writings of the time, examines the state of Finance and the Constitutional Decrees. Starting from the Member Calonne General Acts tries to show the gap between the initial projects and drift revolutionary in all areas: constitutional, religious, on the right to make war, freedom, property, and justice. The judgment of Calonne is entirely negative and is expressed fully in the analysis, point by point, the errors committed by the revolution: many pages are devoted to the state budget statements with the comparison between the old and new deficits, and the thorny question of the "assignats-monnoie" You. In the final part it comes out against the concept and practice of so-called "Real Democracy" and defines the principles of the action counter, anticipating the "Reflections" by Burke. The two intellecutuals attended in London, and in this copy is provided in the end the flattering comments on this work of the English thinker. In France, the book caused uproar and provoked a very violent response by various politicians, with the publication of numerous pamphlets to demolish the arguments and the author. Slight sign of damp stain on the upper margin of the first vol. Good specimen, uncut.View additional info and full condition report

Calonne analyzes different Compte-rendus since 1774, wanting to refute point by point the arguments of Necker, trace an economic and financial history of France in the second half of the '700. Much space is devoted to the famous Compte-rendu of Necker in 1781, which is offset by a "Compte effectif" Thanks to this method, which is based on the comparison of revenue and total expenses of the state, Calonne found significant errors in the accounts is Terray that of Necker. Condition Report: Rare original editions. Significant collection of literary and historical works in which, in the spirit of the French Enlightenment, the elegance of style and taste of a refined eloquence in the service of a critical analysis of costume and strenuous defense of the values of tolerance and civil liberty. Outstanding among these works is the Elogium of Condorcet, who already in 1772 had abandoned the pure scientific activities to devote more properly in revolutionary activity and renewal, for which it is considered one of the most representative spirits encyclopaedism of the Enlightenment. Here chooses to deal with one of the most important figures of the sixteenth-century in France, Michel de l'Hospital, 1501-1573, who crowned a distinguished career, becoming in the last Chancellor of France from 1560 to 1573. Condorcet was attracted especially by the action of reform M. de l'Hospital in the administrative, judicial and financial, as well as its political activity in the religious inspired by a strong sense of tolerance. Close associate of Catherine de 'Medici, M. de l'Hospital is considered a precursor of the idea of religious tolerance, for the action he carried out in order to stop the persecution of the Calvinists, and for a reconciliation between Protestants and Catholics.Nice specimen. We report two other important works of the collection: The Elogium written by Remy, is another interesting addition to knowledge of M. de l'Hospital, where he praised the policy of tolerance and containing a strong condemnation of luxury; the peroration Dusaulx against the "wrath of gambling," which, in fashion now in the society of the time, is analyzed as a kind of mental desease, of which the morbid diseases and the remedies are indicated. In this work we find a lot of news about gambling and other frivolous practices that characterized the conduct of the privileged classes.View additional info and full condition report
