Thomas Jefferson NOTES ON THE STATE OF VIRGINIA WITH APPENDIX RELATIVE TO THE MURDER OF LOGAN'S FAMILY 1803 Antique Americana

Lot 2007: Thomas Jefferson NOTES ON THE STATE OF VIRGINIA WITH APPENDIX RELATIVE TO THE MURDER OF LOGAN'S FAMILY 1803 Antique Americana

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: Notes on the State of Virginia, with an Appendix Relative to the Murder of Logan's FamilyAuthor: Thomas Jefferson - Thomas Jefferson was an American Founding Father, the principal author of the Declaration of Independence (1776) and the third President of the United States (1801-1809). At the beginning of the American Revolution, he served in the Continental Congress, representing Virginia and then served as a wartime Governor of Virginia (1779-1781). Just after the war ended, from mid-1784 Jefferson served as a diplomat, stationed in Paris. In May 1785, he became the United States Minister to France.Jefferson was the first United States Secretary of State (1790-1793) serving under President George Washington. With his close friend James Madison he organized the Democratic-Republican Party, and subsequently resigned from Washington's cabinet. Elected Vice President in 1796, when he came in second to John Adams of the Federalists, Jefferson opposed Adams and with Madison secretly wrote the Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions, which attempted to nullify the Alien and Sedition Acts.Elected president in what Jefferson called the Revolution of 1800, he oversaw the purchase of the vast Louisiana Territory from France (1803), and sent the Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804-1806) to explore the new west. His second term was beset with troubles at home, such as the failed treason trial of his former Vice President Aaron Burr. With escalating trouble with Britain who was challenging American neutrality and threatening shipping at sea, he tried economic warfare with his embargo laws which only damaged American trade. In 1803, President Jefferson initiated a process of Indian tribal removal and relocation to the Louisiana Territory west of the Mississippi River, in order to open lands for eventual American settlers.A leader in the Enlightenment, Jefferson was a polymath who spoke five languages fluently and was deeply interested in science, invention, architecture, religion and philosophy, interests that led him to the founding of the University of Virginia after his presidency. He designed his own large mansion on a 5,000 acre plantation near Charlottesville, Virginia, which he named Monticello. While not a notable orator, Jefferson was a skilled writer and corresponded with many influential people in America and Europe throughout his adult life.Jefferson owned hundreds of slaves, yet he was opposed to the ultimate continuation of the institution of slavery throughout his life and privately struggled with the dilemma of slavery and freedom and its compatibility with the ideals of the American Revolution. Historians are in disagreement with how much Jefferson was committed to the anti-slavery cause. After Martha Jefferson, his wife of eleven years, died in 1782, Jefferson remained a widower for the rest of his life; their marriage produced six children, of whom two survived to adulthood. According to many historians, Jefferson had a relationship with his slave Sally Hemings after his wife's death and fathered at least one and likely all of her six children, four of whom survived to adulthood, while various historians note that some evidence can also support other possible fathers. In 1807, President Jefferson signed into law a bill that banned the importation of slaves into the United States. Though Jefferson has been criticized by many modern day scholars over the issue of slavery he remains rated as one of the greatest U.S. presidents.Publisher: Printed by Wilson & BlackwellCity: TrentonYear: 1803Binding Style: HardcoverPagination: 363 pagesWidth: 4.75" Height: 7.5"Book Details: Condition / Notes: This is a scarce early edition of this work. Lot 2023: Joseph Pennell THE WORK OF CHARLES KEENE WITH AN INTRODUCTION & COMMENTS ON THE DRAWINGS 1897 Antique English Art Plates

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: The Work of Charles Keene with an Introduction & Comments on the Drawings Illustrating the Artist's Methods. To Which Is Added a Bibliography of the Books Keene Illustrated and a Catalogue of His Etchings by W. H. ChessonAuthor: Joseph Pennell - Joseph Pennell was an American artist and author.Born in Philadelphia, and first studied there, but like his compatriot and friend, James McNeill Whistler, he afterwards went to Europe and made his home in London. He produced numerous books (many of them in collaboration with his wife, Elizabeth Robins Pennell), but his chief distinction is as an original etcher and lithographer, and notably as an illustrator. Their close acquaintance with Whistler led the Pennells to undertake a biography of that artist in 1906, and, after some litigation with his executrix on the right to use his letters, the book was published in 1908.He taught at Slade School of Art. He won a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle (1900), and 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition.Pennell visited San Francisco in March 1912, where he undertook a series of so-called "municipal subjects". These were exhibited in December 1912 at "the prestigious gallery of Vickery, Atkins & Torrey", according to Mary Millman and Dave Bohn, authors of "The Master of Line: John W. Winkler, American Etcher" (Capra Press: Santa Barbara, CA, 1994). It is possible that Pennell's visit inspired San Francisco printmakers Robert Harshe and Pedro Lemos, along with sculptor Ralph Stackpole and painter Gottardo Piazzoni, to found the California Society of Etchers in 1912, now the California Society of Printmakers. Longtime members of California Society of Printmakers believe that Pennell was a member of the New York Etchers Club, established in 1877, although his membership in the New York Etchers Club is not confirmed.Pennell did the poster for the fourth Liberty Loans campaign of 1918. It showed the entrance to the New York City harbor under aerial and naval bombardment, with New York in flames and the Statue of Liberty partly destroyed, her head and her torch blown off. He taught at the Art Students League of New York. (Biographical information courtesy of Wikipedia)Publisher: Printed at the Whitefriars Press, for T. Fisher Unwin and Bradbury, Agnew, & Co. Lot 2026: John Locke SOME THOUGHTS CONCERNING EDUCATION 1745 Antique English Philosophy

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: Some Thoughts Concerning EducationAuthor: John Locke - John Locke FRS, widely known as the Father of Classical Liberalism, was an English philosopher and physician regarded as one of the most influential of Enlightenment thinkers. Considered one of the first of the British empiricists, following the tradition of Francis Bacon, he is equally important to social contract theory. His work had a great impact upon the development of epistemology and political philosophy. His writings influenced Voltaire and Rousseau, many Scottish Enlightenment thinkers, as well as the American revolutionaries. His contributions to classical republicanism and liberal theory are reflected in the United States Declaration of Independence.Locke's theory of mind is often cited as the origin of modern conceptions of identity and the self, figuring prominently in the work of later philosophers such as Hume, Rousseau and Kant. Locke was the first to define the self through a continuity of consciousness. He postulated that the mind was a blank slate or tabula rasa. Contrary to pre-existing Cartesian philosophy, he maintained that we are born without innate ideas, and that knowledge is instead determined only by experience derived from sense perception. Description: Title: History of the Rise, Progress and Termination of the American Revolution. Interspersed with Biographical, Political and Moral Observations. In Three VolumesAuthor: Mercy Warren - Mercy Otis Warren was a political writer and propagandist of the American Revolution. In the eighteenth century, topics such as politics and war were thought to be the province of men. Few men and fewer women had the education or training to write about these subjects. Warren was an exception. During the years before the American Revolution, Warren published poems and plays that attacked royal authority in Massachusetts and urged colonists to resist British infringements on colonial rights and liberties.During the debate over the United States Constitution in 1788, she issued a pamphlet, written under the pseudonym "A Columbian Patriot," that opposed ratification of the document and advocated the inclusion of a Bill of Rights. In 1790, she published a collection of poems and plays under her own name, a highly unusual occurrence for a woman at the time. In 1805, she published one of the earliest histories of the American war for independence, a three-volume "History of the Rise, Progress, and Termination of the American Revolution." This was also the first history of the Revolution authored by a woman.Publisher: Printed by Manning and Loring for E. Frances Jacson PLAIN SENSE OR THE HISTORY OF HENRY VILLARS AND ELLEN MORDUANT 1799 First US Edition Debut Novel English Literature

Lot 2036: Frances Jacson PLAIN SENSE OR THE HISTORY OF HENRY VILLARS AND ELLEN MORDUANT 1799 First US Edition Debut Novel English Literature

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: Plain Sense: or, the History of Henry Villars and Ellen Mordaunt. A Novel in Two VolumesAuthor: Frances Jacson - Frances Margaretta Jacson was an English novelist.Frances Jacson was one of five surviving children of the Anglican rector of Bebington, Rev. Simon Jacson (1728-1808), and his wife Anne Fitzherbert (c.1729-1795), daughter of Richard Fitzherbert of Somersal Herbert. Her elder brother Roger succeeded his father as rector, after which the family moved to Stockport and then Tarporley, Cheshire, where her father became rector. She and her sister Maria Elizabetha Jacson (1755-1829) remained single, and looked after their father after he was widowed in 1795.While they were at Tarporley, the family became worried about Frances's other brother Shallcross (d. 1821), also an ordained priest, who had taken to drink and horse-racing. The need to pay off his debts was the spur for the sisters to turn to writing. Frances completed two successful novels. On their father's death in 1808, they had to find a new home and accepted an offer made by their cousin Lord St Helens to lend them Somersal Hall for life. Shallcross's problems resurfaced, with debts totalling £1760. Francis paid these off with her earnings from two further novels and with help from Roger and Maria. She was desolated by the death of her sister in 1829, but eventually resumed her social life among the county gentry and her extended family. Her favourite nephew Henry Gally Knight (a Tory) kept her in touch with politics, in which she was a firm Whig and supporter of parliamentary reform. She also remained a firm Christian.Jacson's first novel, "Plain Sense" (1795; second e.: London: William Lane at the Minerva-Press, 1796; third e. 1799) was immediately popular and followed by a second, "Disobedience" (London: William Lane at the Minerva Press, 1797). These and her subsequent novels appeared anonymously."Things by their Right Names" (London: George Robinson, 1812; second e. "by the author of Plain Sense: London: G. & S. Robinson; Gale, Curtis & Fenner, 1814) was followed by "Rhoda. A Novel" ("By the author of Things by their Right Names. London: Henry Colburn & Co., 1816 [two eds]), for which she turned to one of the foremost London novel publishers. It is considered "the more accomplished" of the two. The second pair of novels were wrongly ascribed to the Scots Mary Brunton. Jacson's authorship was not suggested until 1823. There were further false attributions in the early twentieth century to Alethea Lewis.Despite the financial motives behind her writing activity, Jacson never abandoned her moral purpose, so that her novels are didactic, all featuring a heroine in relatively high society. Through them she shows strong creative insight, especially into burgeoning relationships and marriage. In most cases her heroines discern flaws in the perceptions of themselves and others. There is much irony in the portrayal of several minor characters. Rhoda was preferred to Jane Austen's "Emma" by Maria Edgeworth, from whom the Jacson sisters received a social call in 1818. It was also recommended by Sydney Smith. Isabella ("By the author of Rhoda": London: Henry Colburn & Co., 1823) was written in a calmer period of Jacson's life. The "self-righteous loquacity" of Mrs. Nesbit has been compared to Mrs. Norris in Jane Austen's Mansfield Park. The French translation of this by Mme Collet in 1823, Isabelle Hastings, was wrongly ascribed to William Godwin. Even her diaries, kept from 1829 until her death, were thought for a time to be her brother's.Jacson is also known to have written one religious pamphlet, "Every Day Christianity" (1816). Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: Phaedri Augusti Liberti Fabulae Aesopiae ad Lusitanae Iuventutis Commodum et Institutionem de Integro Recensitae et IllustrataeAuthor: Aesop - Aesop was a Greek writer credited with a number of popular fables. Older spellings of his name have included Esop(e) and Isope. Although his existence remains uncertain and no writings by him survive, numerous tales credited to him were gathered across the centuries and in many languages in a storytelling tradition that continues to this day. In many of the tales, animals speak and have human characteristics.Scattered details of Aesop's life can be found in ancient sources, including Aristotle, Herodotus, and Plutarch. An ancient literary work called The Aesop Romance tells an episodic, probably highly fictional version of his life, including the traditional description of him as a strikingly ugly slave who by his cleverness acquires freedom and becomes an adviser to kings and city-states. A later tradition (dating from the Middle Ages) depicts Aesop as a black Ethiopian. Depictions of Aesop in popular culture over the last 2500 years have included several works of art and his appearance as a character in numerous books, films, plays, and television programs., Phaedrus - Phaedrus, Roman fabulist, was probably a Thracian slave, born in Pydna of Macedonia (Roman province) and lived in the reigns of Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula and Claudius. He is recognized as the first writer to Latinize entire books of fables, retelling in iambic metre the Greek prose Aesopic tales.Publisher: Typis Simonis Thaddaei FerreriaeCity: LisbonYear: 1790Printing Information: Other - see descriptionBinding Style: HardcoverPagination: 261 pages plus 3 pages of advertisesmentsWidth: 4.75" Height: 6.75"Book Details: Condition / Notes: This is a scarce third edition, corrected, so stated, but perhaps the earliest extant Lisbon edition of Phaedrus's rendering of Aesop's fables.Antique volume is bound in old (perhaps original) speckled leather with raised bands and tasteful spine labels in red and black leather. Professional restoration is visible to top one inch of the spine. neat, early repair to interior of front hinge, which is now solid; early scribbling on front endpapers; a handful of tiny stains in the text, with no impact on legibility; interior is generally clean and bright. This edition has an engraved title page vignette. Most of text printed in parallel columns, but in Latin throughout. This volume has index. "Phaedrus, Roman fabulist, was by birth a Macedonian and lived in the reigns of Augustus, Tiberius, Gaius and Claudius [c. 15 BC - c. AD 50]à. He was [reputedly] a slave and was freed by Augustusà. His work shows little or no originality; he simply versified in iambic trimeters the fables current in his day under the name of 'Aesop,' interspersing them with anecdotes drawn from daily life, history and mythology. He tells his fable and draws the moral with businesslike directness and simplicity; his language is terse and clear, but thoroughly prosaic, though it occasionally attains a dignity bordering on eloquence." --Enc. Britannica, 11th ed. Neither OCLC nor KVK (including the Portugese Union Cataloge) locate an edition with this title preceding 1835 or any Lisbon edition of Phaedrus's works prior to that date. Containing among Many Surprising and Curious Matters, the Unutterable Ponderings of Walter the Doubter, the Disastrous Projects of William, the Testy, and the Chivalric Achievements of Peter, the Headstrong--the Three Dutch Governors of New Amsterdam; Being the Only Authentic History of the Times That Ever Hath Been, or Ever Will Be Published Author: Washington Irving - Washington Irving was an American author, essayist, biographer and historian of the early 19th century. He was best known for his short stories "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle", both of which appear in his book "The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent." His historical works include biographies of George Washington, Oliver Goldsmith and Muhammad, and several histories of 15th-century Spain dealing with subjects such as Christopher Columbus, the Moors, and the Alhambra. Irving also served as the U.S. minister to Spain from 1842 to 1846.He made his literary debut in 1802 with a series of observational letters to the Morning Chronicle, written under the pseudonym Jonathan Oldstyle. After moving to England for the family business in 1815, he achieved international fame with the publication of "The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent." in 1819. He continued to publish regularly-and almost always successfully-throughout his life, and completed a five-volume biography of George Washington just eight months before his death, at age 76, in Tarrytown, New York.Irving, along with James Fenimore Cooper, was among the first American writers to earn acclaim in Europe, and Irving encouraged American authors such as Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Edgar Allan Poe. Irving was also admired by some European writers, including Sir Walter Scott, Lord Byron, Thomas Campbell, Francis Jeffrey, and Charles Dickens. As America's first genuine internationally best-selling author, Irving advocated for writing as a legitimate profession, and argued for stronger laws to protect American writers from copyright infringement.Publisher: Inskeep & Bradford & 4 othersCity: New YorkYear: 1809Binding Style: HardcoverNumber of Volumes: 1 Complete: NoPagination: 258 pagesWidth: 4.75" Height: 7.25"Book Details: Condition / Notes: This is the second volume of the scarce two-volume first edition of this work.
