Rare Egyptian Wood and Bronze Mirror

Lot 14: Rare Egyptian Wood and Bronze Mirror

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Egypt, 26th Dynasty, ca. 664-525 BCE. Rare example with original wooden handle supporting the bronze mirror (unusual to have wood survive in such wonderful condition). The bronze would have been polished and reflective in its original condition. It is now tarnished as is normal. The form of the ancient Egyptian mirror changed a little from its first appearance in the Old Kingdom (about 2613-2160 BCE) and consisted of a polished disc of bronze or copper, attached to a handle. The reflective surface was interpreted as the sun disc, because of its shape and shiny qualities. Normally, the handle of the mirror was of wood, metal, or ivory. The handle could be surmounted by the head of Hathor. She was particularly associated with the mirror, which had connotations of sexuality and rebirth. Hathor was one of the most famous goddesses and known as "the Great One of Many Names" - so numerous that she was important in every area of the life and death of the ancient Egyptians. Mounted on a custom built Lucite stand. Measures 13"Provenance:From an old New Jersey collection.Authenticity GuaranteedThe starting price is the price at which the piece can sell.

Egyptian Polychrome Stucco Head of a Lioness

Lot 20: Egyptian Polychrome Stucco Head of a Lioness

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Egypt, 26th Dynasty, ca. 664 BC to 525 BCE. Naturalistically carved, with hand-painted detailed features and grooved markings on the ears and ruff. The lion is a symbol of strength and ferocity. The largest of the cat family, this animal is known as the "king of the beasts." They are equally feared and respected for their power, speed, and intimidating growl. Kings and rulers have associated themselves with this noble creature since the days of antiquity. However, the lack of a bushy mane on this stucco work indicates that it represents a lioness. Therefore, it is probable that this head was a sculptor's model employed during the manufacturing of Sekhmet sculptures. Sekhmet, along with her husband the creator-god Ptah and their son Nerfertum, was part of the powerful trio of deities that protected Ancient Memphis. She was a sun goddess, embodying the scorching, burning, destructive heat of the sun. Fierce goddess of war, the destroyer of the enemies of Ra and Osiris, she was represented as having the head of a lioness and the body of a woman. Like the sun, her temper was uncontrollable. In the legend of Ra and Hathor, Sekhmet's anger became so great, she would have destroyed all of mankind if Ra had not taken pity on us and made her inebriated. Many centuries ago, a master sculptor might have corrected his apprentice by showing them such a model. A useful tool for understanding the dimensions and shape of the subject, such models would have assisted young students when natural observation was not possible. Considering the subject of this work, a lioness' head, it is unlikely that many artists would have been keen to venture into the wild and sketch likenesses of this beast. There is a royal presence visible in the face of this lionness, suggesting that she would be a suitable model for a sculpture of the goddess Sekhmet. Custom stand. Head itself measures 7-1/2"H (19 cm) x 6"W (15 cm). **For reference, compare quality and recent sales price, Pierre Berge & Assc, Dec 1, 2011, Lot 123 (27,500 Euros)**Provenance: Ex-Private East Coast USA Collection; ex-Medusa Ancient Art, Montreal, QC/Champlain, NY, ex- Archeologica Gallery, early 80s. Mycenaean Stirrup Vessel, Ex-Moshe Dayan

Lot 31: Mycenaean Stirrup Vessel, Ex-Moshe Dayan

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Greece, Late Helladic IIIA, ca. 1400-1300 BCE. Terracotta stirrup vessel of squat, broad form with concentric rings and geometric designs painted in brown slip. Unique in form, stirrup jars were first produced in Crete towards the end of the Middle Minoan Period (1700-1550 BCE). This unusual pottery type is also known as the "false neck amphora" because what should function as the vessel's mouth between two handles is a false spout that is capped by a clay disk, the liquid actually pouring from a spout on the shoulder of the vase. The stirrup jar is particularly suited for the transport and pouring of liquids - the false spout and stirrup handles are well designed for holding, while the narrow neck of the true spout allowed for easy control of the liquid's flow. The small spout of the stirrup jar would also have been easy to seal up for transport and to prevent the scent of perfumed oil from evaporating. 4-7/8"w x 3-1/2"W. Confer: L. Marangou, Ancient Greek Art: the N. P. Goulandris Collection, (Athens, 1985), p. 40, no. 21.
