From June to November 940 Hampshire flew 119 sorties by day and 11 by and destroyed, probably destroyed and damaged 4 enemy aircraft. On February 14, 1943 he crashed taking off and was left paralysed for a year losing his flying category. His memory of the Battle recalls a great Sergeant Pilot later ACTING Flight Lieutenant Geoffrey 'Sammy' Allard DFC DFM (Bar) 85 Squadron killed in a flying accident on November 6, 1940. (Allard was credited with 19 confirmed victories. See entry in 'Aces High' (Shores & Williams 1994).

When the Germans invaded Czechoslovakia, Lieutenant-Pilot Fajtl escaped to Poland, then to France where he joined the French Foreign Legion. Seconded to the l'Armee de l'Air. When France fell he went to North Africa and then to England. During the Battle of Britain he flew with 310, 1 & 17 Squadrons. In 1942 he took command of 122 Squadron. Shot down on 5 may over France, he evaded Capture and returned to England via Spain. He led 313 Squadron in December 1943. In February 1944 he volunteered to fight in Russia and became CO of a Czech Squadron.
